CONCACAF unveils rosters for Group B U-17 Final Round

16.5.05 - CONCACAF unveiled the team rosters of Canada, Haiti, Honduras and the host Mexico for the 2005 CONCACAF Under-17 Final Round Qualification Group B will take place at the Estadio Carlos González y González in Culiacán, Sinaloa from 17-21 May.

The last time Mexico staged a CONCACAF Youth Final Round was in 1985 when it was an U-16 tournament.

The CONCACAF U-17 Group B begins on 17 May with Honduras taking on Canada at 18:00 and later Mexico facing Haiti at 20:30. Two days later (19 May), Canada meets Haiti at 18:00 and then Honduras plays against Mexico at 20:30. The CONCACAF Group B Final Round concludes on 21 May with Haiti facing Honduras at 18:00 and later Mexico taking on Canada at 20:30.

The Group B winner will join the USA, who won the CONCACAF U-17 Group A in Heredia, Costa Rica last month, as the Confederation’s automatic qualifiers to the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship to be played in Peru from 16 September – 2 October.

The second-place finishers from Group B will meet Group A’s runner-up, Costa Rica in a home-and-away playoff series for the third CONCACAF berth to the FIFA U-17 event.

HAITI: Under the direction of Jean-Yves Labaze, Haiti earned their berth to the CONCACAF Final Round after claiming the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Group C First Round over Aruba, Netherlands and Surinam and then eliminating Jamaica in a two-game Second Round Series … The Haitians have outscored their CFU opponents 16-0 … Haiti has also not conceded a goal in 469 minutes of CONCACAF Qualification … The Haitians are looking to qualify for their first FIFA U-17 World Championship.

From 1983-1996, CONCACAF staged eight Under-16/17 Tournaments with a winner being crowned in each. Seven of the CONCACAF tournaments (1985-1996) doubled as qualifiers to the FIFA World Championships. In 1999, the U-17 CONCACAF event became a Final Round Qualification consisting of two groups of four, each in a different venue, with the top team from each group progressing to the FIFA World Youth Championship, while the two second-place finishers would meet in a home-and-away series playoff for the last CONCACAF berth.
