Whitecaps FC Women 2005 Season Thread [R]

Recommended Posts

The Womens atendance was very good last year and it is continuing this year. There were lots of free tix given out for yesterdays game, but they still have a solid fan base of 3,000, more than many mens teams.

I heard the women don't get paid and the Caps make a nice profit off the womens team. Wonder if the women will organize and demand some of the profit.

The women are not paid to play.

the players can't be paid because those young enough to be looking at one day playing in the NCAA would no longer be eligable. although players like Andrea Neil are payed for coaching etc.

btw re:attendence, each member of the whitecaps "academy" was given 4 free tickets. the academy is offered for U9 to U17 with about 50ish players in each age group, so you can see how the attendance will obviously be larger than other games.

We had it in reports here that Maribel Dominguez, the Mexican internation who came to play for the Barça women, was offered a financial deal from two W-League teams, one Arizona. Not sure, but they either offered here 12,000 or 25,000 Euros for the season, another team offered the other figure.

I think that result would count as a thrashing :P

I suppose the occasional thrashing is fun...but competitive games are more entertaining to me.

I really hope that San Diego can get a firm base built. They have a great soccer community and the W League could definitely use some more West Coast teams. Something in Portland would be great, as would San Francisco area or even Alberta (I know).

The Guachos women are an expansion team, new this year.

San Diego has another women's team in the WPSL, which is probably a lot stronger. That league has traditionally been the West Coast league for women's soccer, and has expanded elsewhere (it is a breakaway league from the USL organization).

They also have a male PDL team, also called the Guachos, so I think the base is pretty strong there.

WHITECAPS TO HOST THE WASHINGTON DC FREEDOM

…Whitecaps Women will take on the Freedom in a two game exhibition series.

VANCOUVER , B.C., Friday, June 17 - Vancouver Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, today announced that the Whitecaps Women will take on the reigning WUSA champions, the Washington DC Freedom, in a special two game exhibition series. The first match will take place at Caledonia Park soccer stadium in Nanaimo on Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. and the second match will be held at Swangard Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21.

“This is a great opportunity for our fans to witness some exciting soccer in addition to our regular league play,” said Lenarduzzi. “I know that our players and coaches are very much looking forward to competing against this formidable squad in both Nanaimo and Vancouver.”

The Washington DC Freedom come to British Columbia as the reigning WUSA champions; the league suspended operations following the 2003 season. While WUSA is still on hiatus, many of the league’s former teams, including the Freedom, continue to travel for special exhibitions. Over their history, the Freedom have featured some of America ’s best women players including Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.

The match on July 21 will also provide an opportunity for soccer fans to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Two dollars from each ticket purchased will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). The evening will also include other fundraising initiatives designed to generate funds for the CBCF. For example, the Whitecaps will be wearing a special jersey for this game that will feature embroidered pink ribbons on either sleeve. With special thanks to Umbro, these jerseys will only be worn for this game, and will be auctioned off to support the CBCF.

Tickets for the July 21 game will be available as of Saturday, June 18 at all Ticketmaster locations. To order tickets by phone, please call 604-280-4400 or visit Ticketmaster online at www.ticketmaster.ca.

For more ticket information for the game in Nanaimo on the July 18, please contact the Nanaimo Youth Soccer office at 250-729-9400, or visit them online at www.nanaimosoccer.ca.

W-League Whitecaps storm into first place

Vancouver Sun

Friday, June 24, 2005

Goals by midfielder Ashley McGhee, striker Katie Thorlakson and defender Sophie Schmidt lifted the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-0 victory over the Denver Lady Cougars Thursday night in a W-League women's soccer game that was stopped for almost two hours due to a lightning storm.

The 'Caps took an early first-half lead on goals by Mc-Ghee in the 17th minute and Thorlakson in the 24th before play was halted in the 34th minute as lightning crackled around suburban Shea Stadium. Schmidt iced the game for the Whitecaps by scoring in the 90th minute.

It was the second goal of the season by McGhee, the fourth of the season by Thorlakson and the first of the campaign by Schmidt.

The victory improved the Whitecaps' record to 6-1-0 for first place in the Western Conference -- two points ahead of the second-place Arizona Heatwave (5-1-0), which plays host to the fifth-place Seattle Sounders (2-4-1) tonight.

The Whitecaps had not played since June 11, when they defeated the Lady Cougars 3-0 at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium.

Thursday's game was the start of a four-games-in-10-days road trip, which will be followed by four consecutive home games, starting July 3 against Seattle, to close out their regular season.

Lady 'Caps extend streak over Colorado

Vancouver Sun

Saturday, June 25, 2005

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their long domination of Colorado home teams Friday with a 2-1 victory over the Mile High Mustangs in a W-League women's soccer game at the North Area Athletic Complex.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring only one minute after the opening kickoff on a goal by midfielder Ashley McGhee, who made a solo breakaway run for her second tally of the season.

The winning goal was scored by veteran midfielder Andrea Neil, who scored in the 29th minute off a free kick taken by defender Martino Franko. It was Neil's first goal of the season.

Mile High striker Mary Everett closed the gap to 2-1 in the 30th minute.

Vancouver teams, which include the Whitecaps and Breakers, are 13-0-1 on Colorado road trips since the 2001 season. The Breakers and Whitecaps have outscored Colorado home teams 50-8 over that time.

"This one was a hard-fought, gut-check victory," said Whitecaps' head coach Pat Rohla. "I think we played the second-best team in our conference tonight. Mile High created a lot of scoring chances, but we weathered the storm. I was very proud of the team. It was a character win."

Rohla praised Whitecaps' goalkeeper Sian Bagshawe.

"Sian made seven saves, many of them spectacular," Rohla said. "It was her best game for the Whitecaps and her performance inspired all of her teammates."

The victory improved the Whitecaps' Western Conference-leading record to 7-1-0.
