Winnipeg Fury Posted May 10, 2005 Share Posted May 10, 2005 Canadians rated highly in U.S.soccer recruiting rankings TORONTO (CP) - Canadian international Kara Lang is the top international U.S. college recruit this year, according to Soccer Buzz online women's soccer magazine. The 18-year-old from Oakville, Ont., is headed to UCLA this fall. Soccer Buzz (www.soccerbuzz.com) ranked Amanda Cicchini, also of Oakville, No. 3 among international recruits. Cicchini is committed to West Virginia. In all, there were 12 Canadians in Soccer Buzz's top 25 international recruits ratings - although only the top five were rated in order. The other Canadians were Kate Bazos, London, Ont., Florida; Deana Everett, Oakville, Ont., West Virginia; Stephanie Gibson, Richmond Hill, Ont., Texas; Selenia Iacchelli, Edmonton, Nebraska; Aysha Jamani, Calgary, Nebraska; Veronique Maranda, St-Lambert, Que., Tennessee; Stephanie Power, Dartmouth, N.S., VCU; Leigh Quinlan, Victoria, Oregon; Robin Rushton, Toronto, West Virginia; and Kylla Sjoman, Burnaby, B.C., Arizona State. Soccer Buzz rated USC as the top recruiting class followed by UCLA, Virginia, Santa Clara, Tennessee, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Texas. - National Team Notes: The Canadian Soccer Association is holding a news conference in Vancouver on Wednesday to confirm a July 2 exhibition men's game against Honduras. The game, scheduled for Vancouver, will be a Gold Cup warmup. Honduras is ranked 51st in the world, compared to No. 84 for Canada. - Under-20 News: Dale Mitchell's under-20 team is in camp in New Orleans, preparing for this summer's World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. The Canadians play Honduras on Friday before travelling to Blaine, Minn., to take on the U.S. on May 18. The camp concludes May 21. The Canadians leave a week later for Europe. Mitchell will be without a half-dozen players who are with overseas clubs, electing not to press the issue with the Dutch tournament around the corner. Those not at the U.S. camp include goalkeeper Robert Giacomi (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), defenders David Edgar (Newcastle, England) and Nikolas Ledgerwood (1860 Munich, Germany), midfielder Marcel de Jong (Helmond Sport, the Netherlands), and forwards Andrea Lombardo (Atalanta, Italy) and Julian Ucello (Savona Calcio, Italy). Forward Gianluca Zavarise (Calcio Montebelluna, Italy) has not been called up because of injury while Mitchell elected not to recall forward Mike D'Agostino (University of Kentucky). Both were at the last camp in Germany, although Zavarise arrived there carrying the injury and was sent home early. Forward Cam Wilson (Bristol City, England) returns to the fold after recovering from an ankle injury of his own. Mitchell has also summoned defender Mathew Britner (Brown University), midfielder Tomasz Charowski (Duke) and forward Franco Lalli (Cavese Calcio, Italy). - MISL Honours Marinaro: The Major Indoor Soccer League is honouring Canadian Hector Marinaro Jr. by naming its Most Valuable Player award the Hector Marinaro Trophy. The Marinaro trophy will be presented Thursday for the first time in Milwaukee. "Rarely in the history of professional sports does an athlete come along that sets the standard of excellence over such an extended period of time," MISL commissioner Steve Ryan said in a statement. "Hector Marinaro was that kind of an athlete and he was the face of professional indoor soccer for more than a decade." Marinaro, a native of Mississauga, Ont., won six regular season MVP awards during his 19 seasons playing indoors. He was a 14-time all-star, won eight scoring titles, led the league in goals in nine seasons, and won three championships with Cleveland (1993-94, 1995-96, 1998-99). He announced his retirement on Oct. 12, 2004. "This is a tremendous honour. Honestly, I'm really humbled," Marinaro said in a statement. - USL Honours: Vancouver defender Geordie Lyall and Montreal midfielder Pat Leduc have been named to the USL First Division team of the week.
