argh's annual IPL (N.I.) update

Ya know I almost didn't do this, this year because usually there's been no interest or some dick brings up the old orange/green BULL**** and all I'm interested in is the soccer.

But to satisfy only myself here's how the IPL wound up:

Glentoran win the league title and the CL spot, Linfield are runners up and get a UC spot, Portadown win the Irish Cup and the other UC spot.Lisburn Distillery get the Intertoto spot and begin play against Zalgiris Vilinus of Lithuania, I believe June 15th

At the relagation end Omagh Town go down as last place finishers and Crusaders as second from last finishers lose the relagation/promotion playoff to Glenavon (who finished 2nd in 1st division). So Omagh Town and Crusaders go down and Armagh City(winners of 1st division) and after a one year exile Glenavon go up.

I'd like to promise not to post all summer about how both Irish leagues' clubs fare in Euro Cups qualification but obsesive/compulsive behavior is almost impossible to control. ;)

Don't worry about the o/c behaviour - I'll always read your Irish related posts. I actually think that the situation in Ireland isn't that different from Canada. We could learn a lot from the success and failures (and failures) of both Irish leagues' and federations' attempts to promote top caliber soccer in their respective countries. Plus, the teams are fun and have some great history. What's going on with the Setanta Cup?

Mike.

The only complaint I have is that when I see "Ireland" and "Irish" I think of the Republic of Ireland. The one you are talking about - which I know only because I recognize the club names - I always refer to as "Northern Ireland".

C'mon now this title clearly says IPL which is N.I., Eircom League of Ireland is RoI and is a "same calender year league" which only started play in April or late March. Get with the programme ;)

Setanta Cup some one asked about here's the standings:

Group 1

Longford Town 2-0-2 6 points

Linfield 2-0-1 6 points

Glentoran 1-0-2 3 points

Group 2

Shelbourne 2-1-1 7 points

Cork City 1-1-1 4 points

Portadown 0-2-1 2 points

EDIT: Latest results from to-days play .....Linfield 1-0 Longford Town which changes a whole lot......hmmmm... Maybe that Shels/Linfield final is still possible. Above standings updated.

Also Linfield supporters will not be allowed to attend the Setanta Cup game May 17 vs Glentoran because of a pitch invasion incident during IPL play on April 23 at the Oval, a game in which the Blues won.

That doesn't help me! "IPL" = "Irish Premier League" = (to me) "Republic of Ireland Premier League". And "Eircom" is a sponsor so it automatically gets thrown out, I don't pay attention to sponsors - if I did it would just change next year and I'd have to learn a new one.

Usually when soccer is involved I've found that if Irish comes first it means N.I. , as in Irish Premier League , Irish Football League , or Irish Football Ass'n (IFA). When RoI I've found that "of Ireland" is used , as in League of Ireland, Premier Div, 1st Div. etc., or Football Ass'n of Ireland (FAI). But unfortunatly "Eircom League" sometimes with "of Ireland" included most times not, has been the standard lexicon used by almost everything I've read in the last at least 4 years?

But that's how I tell the difference maybe some who post here who are from there may have better ways of telling the difference.

EDIT: Okay, I'm slow the Mrs. pointed out to to me that I should put N.I. or RoI. in the title for the guys that don't just know.
