The Ref
Germany blew Canada away with a 3-1 win. I kind of expected this based on the previous game where Canada barely managed to tie 1-1 against a weak Holland. Worth noting is that none of Canada's traditional strikers have been able to score in two games. Today it was Amber Allen who scored the lone Canada goal and previous game was Whitecaps Andrea Neil scoring.
jonovision
I saw the last 20 minutes of this game on TV, and I thought Canada was doing OK in midfield, holding their own. What they did lack, though, was quality in the final third, as well as focus on defense. Although neither of the last 2 German goals came on defensive breakdowns, there were a few that could easily have been cashed in. Christine Sinclair bungled what looked to be a really good chance when it was 2-1.
Massive Attack
Soccer women lose OSNABRUECK, Germany (CP) - For the second game in a row, Canada's defence was breached late in the contest and this time it led to a 3-1 loss to top-ranked Germany in a women's exhibition soccer match Thursday. The Canadians gave up the tying goal in injury time in a 1-1 tie with the Netherlands on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Germans scored in the 79th and 85th minutes. Despite the loss, Canadian coach Even Pellerud liked what he saw against such a powerful opponent. "It was a major improvement (from the Netherlands)," the Norwegian native said. "I think it was the best game we have played since maybe the quarter-final against China in World Cup 2003. "So I was very pleased with this performance despite the two late goals." The two teams meet again Sunday in Hildesheim. The Germans, tied with the U.S. for No. 1 in the FIFA world rankings, fielded their top squad Thursday. "They played the best team they have and they are peaking preparing for the European championship," Pellerud said. "So we saw one of the best teams in the world, for sure." Canada is currently ranked 11th while the Dutch are 17th. Amber Allen of Chilliwack, B.C., gave Canada an early lead after 14 minutes, knocking in a free kick headed down by Amy Walsh. But Sonja Fuss tied it up in the 45th minute. Star striker Birgit Prinz - with her record-tying 83rd German goal - made it 2-1 before Inka Grings secured the win with five minutes remaining. Pellerud started Taryn Swiatek in goal behind a back four of Sophie Schmidt, Sasha Andrews, Isabelle Morneau and Randee Hermus. The midfield was Walsh, Diana Matheson and Andrea Neil (earning her 103rd cap), with Brittany Timko, Christine Sinclair and Allen up front. Veteran Charmaine Hooper, who came on for the second half of the Dutch game, did not see any action against the Germans. Hooper had a baby in January. "She needs more time," Pellerud said. "But she will come back fast. She just needs more soccer play and I will give her that." Pellerud did give three youngster a runout as substitutes: 16-year-old Jodi-Ann Robinson, 18-year-old Amanda Cicchini and 20-year-old Katie Thorlakson. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/Canada/2005/04/21/1006996-cp.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's World Cup Team Thursday, April 21, 2005 Canada Falls 3-1 To Germany Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team lost 3-1 to Germany today in Osnabrück, Germany despite scoring first on a goal by Amber Allen in the 14th minute. CAFAN
quote:Originally posted by The Ref Germany blew Canada away with a 3-1 win. Last 2 games against Germany and France were ties. Tie with France is no big deal - or is it? France has recently beat Sweden, Norway (2 times) and Denmark. Their only loss this year was 1-0 to the USA. 3-1 was not such a bad result. Canada's rust is showing and this is not the best squad Canada has to offer. Canada got on the board first and held Germany to a tie until the 79'th minute. Pellerud has reason to be pleased. I believe his top priority is getting his defense back to where it was in early 2003 and adding depth. This game was a step in the right direction. One of Germany's goals was really soft (Swiatek's error) and by all accounts, the younger defenders, Schmidt and Andrews, are playing well. If we assume the best case scenario, Pellerud will also have Hooper, Nonen, Zurrer and Chapman to choose from, along with Hermus and Morneau. It looks like the depth is coming. Too bad Boyd is no longer in the mix.
