The cup featuring the top 16 BC teams, which had to qualify from the VMSL, the Vancouver Island League and the from the Fraser Valley league started play on Friday evening. The Champs should be crowned in 3 weeks.

Will these years champ from BC continue the tradition of being crowned Canadian championship in the fall?

Be careful what you wish for...

Last year's BC and Canadian champs, Pegasus, not only didn't make this year's BC's 16-team finals, but also got relegated from the VMSL Premier in shocking style.

Shameless plug...

Issue 53 of World Football Pages has the Provincial Cup finals chart for men's, women's and u21 divisions, plus a crap load of Cup and League finales from BC's amateur leagues.

No chance of this years Champ getting demoted next year. The 8 teams which made it through the first round this year all have more hair than the middle aged Pegasus team.

4 VMSL teams made it through the first weekend, along with 2 from the Fraser valley and 2 from Victoria. The Victoria Gorge team, which was undefeated all season, beat a stacked Columbus Clan team yesterday, and are now favoured to be crowned as BC Champs.

There are 4 teams left, 3 from the VMSL and 1 from Vancouver Island.

Next weekend, Sapperton Rovers with former "Canadian Playing Abroad" player Emilio Bottiglieri vs Surrey United with Niall Thompson.

In the other match, Sportings, (semi-Portugese team) vs Vancouver Island's VanTreights.

The winners play in the final which will preceed a Whitecaps game. Maybe the Caps stikers will watch the game and learn a thing or two about goal scoring.

The semi-fianl games will be played next weekend at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey. On Saturday at 2:30 Sapperton Rovers and Surrey play. On Sunday, Vantreights vs Sporting play at 2:30.

Anyone know the backgrounds to the names "Sapperton" and "Vantreights".

The Sapperton Rovers derive their name from the same origin as or directly from a neighbourhood of New Westminster (the Royal City) which is one of several municipalities within the Greater Vancouver Regional District. New Westminster was founded by the (British) Royal Engineers in 1859 and served as the first capital of the united colony of British Columbia. The easternmost neighbourhood in New Westminster is known as Sapperton, after the "Sappers" of the Royal Engineers - in the British tradition, military engineers are referred to as sappers.

I don't know the history of Vantreight FC which is a Vancouver Island club but suspect it is probably related to G.A Vantreight & Sons which is a family run flower and produce farm established in 1884 by John Vantreight, who moved to Vancouver Island from Dublin, Ireland. The farm has grown to over 750 acres and at certain times of the year employs over 600 staff. The business is now owned and operated by Ian and Michael Vantreight, direct descendants of the founder. If anybody can confirm or deny this please do so.

Controversy has erupted in the BC Mens Open Cup.

BC Soccer has ordered Vantreights to replay its quarterfinal match against Westside Rino. Westside will have to travel to vancouver island and play in front of the angry Vantreighst fans this weekend.

The cause of the replay is that a ref (concidentally from the Vantreights area) gave a yellow card to a Westside player during the last game, The ref thought he gave the player a yellow earlier, so he then showed him the red. The player had not received a yellow earlier, so he should not have been red carded. The score was 0-0 at the time of the expulsion.

The Sapperton - Surrey United semi-final game is still on as originally scheduled.

Things are really getting interesting. I just posted this to the Victoria Soccer Net:

SCANDAL HANGS OVER REPLAY - Victoria Soccer Net

April 30 2005 - Unconfirmed reports cast a shadow of scandal over the upcoming Provincial Cup replay between Vanteights and Westside.

In making the decision to award a replay at Royal Athletic Park on Sunday, sources have alleged that BC Soccer refused to view video evidence supporting the original result in favour of the Victoria side. The video, reportedly shot by a local TV station, apparently shows two cautions issued to the Westside player in question, making the expulsion valid. If true, these allegations will make Sunday's match either a vindication or a farce. Regardless of the result however, BC Soccer will likely face some scrutiny over it's handling of the issue.

The first finalist has been decided. Surrey United defeated Sapperton on penalty kicks.

The score was tied 1-1 after 90, then 2-2 after 120 and 5-3 at the end.

Two young Sapp players folded under pressure in penalty kicks, one shot wide and the other shot the ball over the net.

Niall Thompson played well for Surrey and Emilio Bottiglieri played well for Sapperton.

BC Soccer is a complete and utter embarassment. What a joke.

They didn't just beat the West Side whiners they ran them off the park.

The vociferous goalie was kept busy picking the ball out of the back of the net.

The Vantreight team was truly on fire, the coach didn't need to motivate his players, they had a score to settle, and they did it in style.

I guess Vantreights couldn't afford to pay for more gas as they lost to Sporting in todays semi-final. The game was decided in penalty kicks.

The final next week is between 2 VMSL teams, Sporting vs Surrey United.

If Surrey United can pull off a victory with their men next weekend they will achieve provincial champion status simultaneously in both the men's and women's open divisions, a rare achievement to be sure. Does anyone know if any club has managed this before, in BC or in any other province?

Congratulations to Sporting, from a Vantreight position obviously very dissappointed, and buying gas would not have been a problem they have there own pump at the farm.

I except the necessity of penalty shoot outs but it is a very sad way to end the tie, obviously having a replay is not a practical possibility.Well done to the boys, they certainly showed that they can compete at this level.
