The Vancouver Whitecaps re-sign defender/midfielders Kevin Harmse and Steve Kindel

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, today announced the re-signing of defender/midfielders Kevin Harmse and Steve Kindel.

Harmse, 20, returns for his second season with the Whitecaps. Drafted by the Whitecaps in the first round, 10th overall in 2002, the graduate of Coquitlam’s Centennial High School made his Whitecaps debut last year against the Edmonton Aviators on April 30. In total Harmse played in 12 games scoring one goal and assisting on another. The 6’1”, 185-pound defender/midfielder was born in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, but grew up in Vancouver, B.C.

“Kevin has a world of talent for a young player, with the potential to be a top class player.” said head coach, Bob Lilley. “His physical attributes and ability on the ball will be an important asset for our club. We expect Kevin to play in both the back and the midfield during the course of the season.”

Harmse international experience includes five games for the U-23 Canadian Olympic National Team and 17 caps for the U-20 Canadian National Team. In 2003 Harmse played in Europe with the Tromso IL of the Norwegian Premier League.

Kindel, 28, enters his eighth season with the Caps. Last year Kindel scored two goals and setup two in 32 games with the blue and white. In 2001 and 2002, Kindel finished second in team scoring and was named Second Team All A-League. Consistently among the team leaders in minutes played the 5’8” 150 pound defender/midfielder has logged 14,148 minutes in 168 games for the Caps. The Burnaby, B.C. native has 31 goals and 17 assists in a Whitecaps uniform.

“Steve is a solid pro, he is versatile, extremely hard working and very durable,” explains Lilley. “He brings quality to the left flank and can always be counted on by his teammates.”

A former standout at SFU, Kindel was 1997 NAIA Pacific Northwest Conference Player of the Year. During the 1998/99 season Kindel played in Europe with RAEC Mons of the Belgian 3rd Division. Kindel returned to the United Soccer Leagues in 2000, first joining the Richmond Kickers, than the Hampton Roads Mariners, before re-signing with Vancouver on August 1, 2000.
