River City
How strong are Lyon? I've always written off the french league as second tier but their whooping of Bremen was masterful. Interesting to see how they fare in the next round. As for Barca, I hate to see them lose, but Chelsea under Mourinho is tough and to be respected. I posted before that the winner of this one was going to win the UCL. And I hope Riikjard is gone at the end of the season too. Even though he earned brownie points with me for getting rid of half the Dutch national team at Barca, it was too little too late. Quaresma left because of Riikjard, and he should have kept Davids and Saviola. I didn't the see the Milan game so I can't comment. edit to add ® only:mod
jonovision
There probably should be an R in this thread title. As for the Barca-Chelsea match, it was exciting, that much is for sure. The 4th Chelsea goal was more than a little bit suspect, though, with Carvalho draped all over the Barca keeper until the ball crossed the line. I would say that that was an undeserved result from for Lyon. WB were the far better side from what I was able to see.

WB were the far better side from what I was able to see. If Lyon had won by a couple of goals, ok, I could see how that can be considered undeserved. But to score 7 goals in a game? Either the goalie was having a really bad day, the defense weren't properly organized, or the midfield couldn't keep any control. Only two Lyon goals were from dead ball situations (corner and a penalty), so 5 were from free flowing play and no good team lets that happen. I was hoping Werder Bremen would advance (in part because of Stalteri and in part so Portugal can catch up to France in the European Club standings), but I think the best team is going through. I'm pretty sure it was a continued protest regarding Chelsea's 4th goal. The whole team protested at the time the goal was scored but, to their credit, didn't keep at it too long, choosing instead to spend their time pushing forward to try to score the all-important next goal. Guest Jeffery S.
quote:Originally posted by jonovision I'm pretty sure it was a continued protest regarding Chelsea's 4th goal. The whole team protested at the time the goal was scored but, to their credit, didn't keep at it too long, choosing instead to spend their time pushing forward to try to score the all-important next goal. The problem with the goal was that the linesman put up his flag for the foul (Carvalho literally grabbed Valdes and held him), took it down, but stayed at the end line instead of going to the centre after the goal. Why did he stay? He though the ref was going to consult him on it. Here Pier Luigi blew it, and I am sure the pressure put on by Chelsea affected him in this critical moment. Apart from that, Barça was very suspect at the back, as we have been vs. strong teams countering all year. Even then, with less than 20 goals against in the league we can't complain. The problem comes when the opponent has real counterattacking talent. And Chelsea does. I agree with the above comments about Joe Cole, a fine player. It seems a Chelsea scout came over to insult the Barça bench, and then Eto'o was called "monkey" by a Chelsea steward in the tunnel. I don't think that ever would have happened if their coach hadn't been trash talking so much. Chelsea is a fine team, and Mourinho a good coach who is right to feel the Barça press slighted him when he was here, noone took him seriously, and he was an arrogant assistant coach back then under Robson and Van Gaal. As for the game, the first half was still the best piece of entertainment I have seen all year. Ronaldinho's goal was amazing, but all for nought. Being a Barça fan I am sort of used to it though. amacpher
Jose M. is great for football but I think he went too far in the build-up to this match. One thing Barca fans can still claim: They're the best team in the best league. Now they just gotta make sure they win La Liga. With the Madrid x Barca match occurring on the Saturday night right b/w the first and second legs of the CL QF, there's little doubt that this loss helps Barca in their quest to win Spain. Massive Attack
Barca screwed themselves by not finishing 1st during the group stage. They lost 2-0 to Shaktar on the last day allowing Milan to get the first seed. Sure, they still may have drawn Bayern or Manure, but the rest of the second place teams would have been a lot more beatable than Chelsea.
