Joe Concacaf
Why did Paul Dolan play only the first match in the 1986 World Cup?

Dolan was not the #1 keeper for Canada at that time. Tino Lettieri was and it was he ( the colourful lettieri ) who guided canada through qualifying. I cannot recall what the circumstances were that prevented Tino from playing in the first game. I think it was either injury or suspension or one one of those rediculous conflicts with indoor clubs ( i.e.: Branko Segota) that hindered Canada at that time. It was because Tino just came-out of the MISL (indoor soccer) championship finals that year. Therefore, Tony Waiters felt that Tino was not yet ready for that big World-Cup match as a result that indoor soccer Vs. outdoor soccer is a-lot different from one another. According to Waiters, Tino did not have the necessary physical conditions for the outdoor game.
Free kick
A brief description of his career. BTW I was going to mention that memorable stuffed parrot that he used carry on to the pitch. http://www.thesoccerhalloffame.ca/OSN.nsf/0/02502f99176e0d2585256b0b005f64c7?OpenDocument
loyola
I think that Dolan is the youngest goalkeeper ever to start in a WC match. Am I correct?

He was, but for some reason I think that may have been broken in either this last WC or the one previous. But I can't tell you who, so I may be wrong about that. matthew
On the broadcast from 86 they talked about Dolan playing really well in a couple of friendlies (England? Wales? I can't remember) and explaied that's why he was starting. Lettieri was one of the stars of the team, but I think (and I'm not positive) that Dolan got better prep in Waiter's eyes than Lettieri partly because Tino was playing with Minnesota in MISL. Dolan played well, but shouldered the blame for the goal, so Lettieri got the last two games. cheers, matthew
