15 Players Selected to Camp in Vancouver

Ian Bridge

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s Under-20 Team Head Coach Ian Bridge has invited 15-players to attend the program’s first camp of 2005 from February 26th to March 6th in Vancouver, BC.

Bridge has invited seven players who were listed on his Under-19 roster for Thailand; Kate Bazos (London, ON), Amanda Cicchini (Oakville, ON), Stephanie Labbe (Stoney Plain, AB), Erin McNulty (Winnipeg, MB), Jodi-Ann Robinson (Richmond, BC), Sophie Schmidt (Abbotsford, BC), and Emily Zurrer (Crofton, BC).

Two players, who will attend the camp, did not compete in Thailand; Molly Alexander (Vancouver, BC), and Caroline Vanderpool (Montreal,QC). Vanderpool was a member of the team that defeated the United States, last summer, for first place at the CONCACAF U-19 Final Qualifying tournament.

Newcomers to Bridge’s roster are: Paige Adams (Port Coquitlam, BC), Andreanne Gagne (Montreal, QC), Natalie Martineau (Oakville, ON), Robin Ruston (Toronto, ON), Maria Scichilione (Saint John, NB), and Desiree Scott (Winnipeg, MB).

"I am looking forward to seeing many new players stepping up to the U-20 program as well as the players still eligible for this team [post-Thailand] because FIFA has changed the age group for the World Championships,” said Bridge. “The focus of this camp will be to evaluate the players, both new and experienced, in as many game situations as possible. After the winter break, I think this is both demanding and fun for the players."

In January, following the FIFA Under-19 Women’s World Championship Thailand 2004, FIFA raised the age limit of players from 19 to 20. As a result, the competition will be renamed the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship. Additionally, the number of teams in the final round of competition will increase from 12 to 16. FIFA’s Executive Committee will decide at its next meeting on March 7-8, 2005 on how the additional four slots will be distributed among the confederations.
