Simpson/Brennan

I was thinking that I would like to see Jim Brennan play at the back while Josh Simpson played in midfield. It occurred to me that Josh likes to take people on (and appears to be good at it) so midfield is probably a better spot for him. As well Brennan is a more experienced player and I believe normally plays at the back for norwich, he could still make a few overlapping runs to get his crosses in. What do you guys think?

I like this a lot, actually. At minimum, I think it is worth a shot. Brennan has pace, but Simpson seems to have even more to spare. It would be a nice duo if they could figure each other out.

I'm more concerned about right mid.

Nope.

JB at right wing. Simpson on the bench. Nice left foot both men, but JBs light years ahead of Josh on quality of delivery I'd say. And defensively.

Mind you, Simpson's got the wheels at any level. And courage enough to fire one now and again at goal. Like that. If you wanted a side built front to back on speed, he may be your man. Hell, he'd be exactly the sort you'd be looking for. But that's the exception in my books and certainly not the rule. Maybe in a couple-three years he'll legitimately push Brennan out, but certainly not yet.

JB's my left outside mid 90% of the time.

being JB's biggest fan and all, i think i should say something here. As much as i like brennan, i really think simpson has all the tools to be even better than jim, maybe even be a solid premiership player for a good club. undoubtedly, as one of our brightest young stars, he's our left mid of the future, im pretty sure thats his best position. to get where we want him to be, he needs to be playing there. Jim has had his time moving forward and scoring goals, but now we need his solid defensive play at the back.

Brennan-Klukowski-Nsaliwa-Stalteri, hows that for a backline?

I agree that Simpson should be a left mid rather than a full back. While he's got good pace etc, he doesn't have the size and strength that I like to see in a defender. If you glance at the Millwall board, they seem to be in agreement that he is too lightweight to play at the back. They are unanimous (or almost so) that he has the skills to play as a winger or midfielder, though, and are greatly enamoured with his willingness to take on opponents. One problem appears to be his poor crossing ability. I think that this will disappear with experience.

Brennan, for me, has to be a full back who can push forward. Canada's answer to Roberto Carlos, perhaps? He is light years ahead of Simpson defensively and gets forward enough to make his crossing ability a real asset to the team.

Brennan is playing midfield for Norwich AFAIK. He's not a great defender and he certainly can take players on and he can cross very well. The two are pretty interchangeable which is nice. If Simpson is getting forward really well, we could even drop Brennan back and it wouldn't make a big differnce. I think if Simpson is going to play in the back for Millwall, there's no reason we shouldn't use him there too. It's neither guy's true natural position, but at least Simpson is there with his club more than Brennan. And Jazic isn't a bad option either (I've Klukowski pencilled in at centre back for now).

Right mid? Umm Stalteri? I'm not sold on Bernier as a mid at all.

cheers,

matthew

A little OT, but I was watching AC's 'Christmas Tree' trying to figure out if we could play a defensive formation. I guess Holger tried, but I never saw much more than the hoofing display we saw again against NI. I thought (wrongly, I concede) some balls out English football would be great against Guatemala & Honduras, but Portugal? We're in trouble. Still, can we play any kind of a possession game?

I saw some kind of 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 against Costa Rica that looked pretty good, mostly because Grande was particularly in form that night. I like Simpson and Bernier, but I'd like to know if any of you think this would work:

----------Nsaliwa-----Reda-----Klukowski----------

Stalteri-----------------------------------Brennan

-----Serioux---------Bircham----------Deguzman----

----------------------Hume------------------------

---------------------Occean-----------------------

Could the trio in the middle maintain any possession with Hume tracking back to help out? If we have to hoof long balls, Brennan and Stalteri should be able to win us some corners pushing up the wings. The latter did a great job of this against Lyon.

who do you play at left back then Cheeta? I thought that Jazic looked out of place during qualifying, looked to be a good tackler but perenially out of position and getting beat for pace. I think Klukowski will take one of the cb positions. That seems to leave only Simpson and Brennan.

Brennan's a better crosser, Simpson's got more pace; I like the wingback idea to make use of Stalteri's skills, but not with that midfield. Three at the back is dodgy unless you've got an experienced sweeper ie Menezes.

Here's a variation of the 4-3-2-1 that could work:

--------------Lars--------

---------Reda-----McKenna

Stalteri-----------------Brennan

---Nsaliwa---Attiba--Klukowski

--------DeGuz-------Hume

--------------Occean----

Actually I thought as the WCQs got on Jazic got more and more into that left 'back spot. Maybe it was post Hastings expectations but he looks well worth keeping to me. I think with a little more "mature" help from the left winger he could prove a valuable anchor. The man knows to tackle. And he's not totaly hopeless going forward.

He's got initiative going for him. That may have been his undoing on more than one occasion. That and being left to the wolves by whoever got thrown onto the left wing with him.

Yeah, Mike looks like he's realy come along these past couple of seasons. If getting a real look-see at the man is all we'll get out of Belfast, then that whole exercise may have been worth it.

Josh off the bench to pick on the tired enemy legs? Like the sound of that. Holy super-sub PeschMan!
