Thank You Newcastle!

Ha ha ha ha!

Well i appreciate your humor frosty and your 'frosty' blessing of the Newcastle starting 11 :)

The quad was unrealistic, considering that the 'special' one has not rotated his squad, the Chelski machine has been hit by crucial injuries, and subbing three players at once? What the heck was that?

My favorite moment of the whole match must have been when Glen Johnson was christened 'keeper after the Cudicini sending-off AND saving a free kick to boot!

But, at least Chelski kept the dream alive till the end of february. Arsene's dream of the quad died in what, November, December? And at the hands of Fergie and Manure no less! I think this last fact is the greater indignity :)

This, I thought this would be be the true test of Chelski. An FA Cup game on the 20th of Feb (lost, they did. To 13th place Newcastle), a CL game on the 23rd vs Barca, away. The League Cup final vs Liverpool on the 27th. A league game vs Norwich on the 5th of March and back to CL at home to Barca on the 8th.

Anyways the quad is gone but maybe the treble?

Hey I've still got 4 days of sun and golf ........what am I doin' here ?

Now here's an interesting possible situation: Lets say Liverpool won the Champions League (unlikely yes, I know, but mab they might start finding some cajones), but then didn't get into the top 4 in the Premiership.

The answer is in the UEFA CL Regulations:

"1.03 At the request of the national association concerned, the UEFA Champions League title-holders may be entered for this competition, as an additionalrepresentative of that association, if they have not qualified for the UEFA Champions League via the top domestic league championship. If, in such a case, the title-holders come from an association entitled to enter four teams for the UEFA Champions League, the fourth-placed club in the top domestic league championship has to be entered for the UEFA Cup."

http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/19071.pdf at p. 1

Thus, it appears that if Liverpool won the CL Competition this year, but failed to be in the top 4 of Premiership, the FA would be in the difficult position of choosing Liverpool or the 4th place Premiership club (imagine the brouhaha, especially if the 4th place club was Everton!). This is an unfortunate landmine that should not exist in the regulations. If the FA was responsible, they would announce which way they would go now so the "rules" would be knwon, but they are probably, if theyt are even half-conscious of it, just hoping that the problem would not arise.

Didn't this just happen a couple of years ago in Spain??

In any event, I'm glad to see Chelski beginning to show a blip that their bandwagon fans (aka Man United fans from 5 years ago) kept saying would never occur.

Common Barca!!

It would be kinda kewl to see Liverpool put up a 5-0 score agin' Chelski in the League Cup final too. [}:)]

But with every competition the Blues drop out of it increases their odds in the rest!

Hmmm... I don't think that's true with Chelsea or any team with that kind of depth. Confidence is more important than rest that's created due to Cup losses, etc. Besides, the League Cup will be over for Chelsea regardless what happens against L'pool.

And also, in response to a comment earlier in this thread: Arsenal are still alive for the real treble even NOW (nevermind Nov., Dec.). Albeit their chances are slim, but they're better than Chelski's! :D

You can't include the Carling Cup as a component of a treble. It's FA, CL, League championship, period. The Carling Cup (Is it still called that?) Does not count! It only becomes relevant if the other three are truly attainable, and you can actually begin considering the "Quadruple."

And "Indignity" regarding the Carling Cup? End of point. Uhh, except the part about losing to Man U. That one hurt. It hurt a lot. I will get over it in time.

Anyway, back to the original point of this thread - THANK GOD NEWCASTLE ENDED CHELSKI AND THAT POMPOUS OVERCONFIDENT MANAGER'S REIN OF TERROR ON THE 'LACK OF HIGHLIGHT' SHOWS. "Another stunning 1 - nil win" etc. etc.

.....yeah....but not after yesterday's performance. Odds are now slimmer then Lehmann being named 'man of the match' next CL game.

But Chelsea have yet to play the Barca machine, so who knows.

Yes, the Carling Cup is a competition 'Lite', but it still is something rather then nothing.

If Liverpool does beat Chelsea, does the Carling Cup then get elevated into something legitimate?

I don't know why I'm defending Chelsea.....just an interesting story to this years season .....besides Newcastle's fall to 13th place.

But has anyone looked at the goal differential in this years Premiership table? Chelsea has a whopping +42 GD! So they got themselves a rich owner and can afford to have good players sitting on the bench? This is different to any Euro giant how? It's just the Blues turn at the top of the cycle.

Has anyone noticed that Leeds U. are only six points out of the playoffs with 11 games left on their schedule. In that league without prima-donas and the same ol' clubs at the top year after unending freaking year, that we call the Premiership or La Liga or Serie A. How do these teams stay on top? Well by doing what Chelski is doing.......Chelsea is just new to the club of elites that's all.

And since the League Cup has been counted before as part of a treble, I have no prob counting it this year. If it was ManUre or Arsenal or Liverpool (they may still win it) the detractors wouldn't be speaking up. Truthfully it's a nice change from the normal ManUre,Arsenal,Liverpool cycle. Go Blues just so ManUre, Arsenal or Liverpool don't win nuthin' [}:)]

EDIT: to show the competitive imbalance of the Premiership.

The League winners from 1994 as taken from www.the-english-football-archive.com

'94 Man U, '95 Blackburn (?), '96 Man U, '97 Man U, '98 Arsenal, '99 Man U, '00 Man U, '01 Man U, '02 Arsenal, '03 Man U, '04 Arsenal.

Which I guess shows my dislike for Liverpool is unfounded but there it is anyways.

Was it so many years ago that Newcastle lost the title on pretty much the last day of play after having a good, good, lead coming out of New Years?

But that was the closest title race I recall in the EPL in a long time. And your point is taken.

The Chelsea voodoo dolls are hot sellers this year me thinks...

Damn last years performances by Arsenal. That was some footballing. One bad week. That's it.

You know what? I actually have always been a secondary fan of Chelsea. I am kind of happy at the team, and I enjoy a good defensive show too. But Mourinho is just iritating now. When he first arrived he kind of had a noble confidence about him, especially when he handled Sir Alex in the media, but now he drives me nuts!
