I got a couple of errors, but both were fixed with a refresh.

I found it pretty slow at times. Worse than the previous site was during games.

Wow, just tuned in here and started going through the in-game thread from the beginning and reading the change in emotion amongst the V's was worth the read. Sorry I missed the conversation (well, mostly about the porn) but what a great result!

So pleased for the whole crew.

Ryan Gyaki!

clap, clap, clap, clap, clap!

Ryan Gyaki!

clap, clap, clap, clap, clap!

Another good sidebar to this, is now Mexico will be pissed an looking to take full points off the other two sides. That can only help us. Still, let's take maximum points and go in as the first or second seed from the zone.

The first picture is Vince Stewart and Simon Kassaye. Plus in the picture of Jamie Peters, how is it possible that he is actually taller than someone? :D

I'm kidding.

Notes from a spanish game report:

"after the first mexican goal, the Canadians continued to work hard down the wings, with Peters on the right and DeJong on the left opening up the Mexican defense"

"at 27 minutes, a low DeJong cross went through the Mexican defense and landed at Gyaki's feet for a tap in goal"

"Mexico became paralyzed, while Canada's speed continued to bring danger to the Mexican goal"

"Peters took the ball from the half and carried it deep into the Mexican area, a quick back pass to Gyaki for an easy goal on Ochoa (mexican keeper)"

"in the second half, Mexico had lost all control, seemed desperate"

"at 65 minutes, Will Johnson sent in a quick pass from the right to an unmarked DeJong, who though all alone in front of the net, missed - the clearest opportunity the game"

and of course, in the Canadian tradition....

"in the final minutes, Canada sat back and allowed Mexico to attack with everything they had, but due to their own desperation, they could not convert"

Canada's subs:

82' Riley O'neil for Marcel DeJong

87' Cam Wilson for Will Johnson

Thank you all for the information about the game. A great result, especially considering we had more younger players than Mexico.

Vancouver Fans feedback about Peters play was excellent. We can ignore those Voyageurs who argued that Peters isn't as good as some of the other U 20 Canadians. After watching him with the senior team, and reading about this game, I'm on the lookout for a Peters jersey. Perhaps I'll find one in an airport.

That article sets out Canada's two late subs:

CANADA: Joshua Wagenaar, Vince Stewart, Nikolas Lederwood, Andrey Hainault, Simòn Kassaye, Carlo Schiavoni, Jaime Peters, Tyler Rosenlund, Ryan Gyaki, Will Johnson (Cameron Wilson 87), Marcel De Jong (Riley O'Neill 82).

thanx for pointing that out beaches, i caught it at the same time as you did i guess; was hoping Ucello would have got on, maybe next game. I guess an important thing we can take from this game is that Peters took a step towards fulfilling all the 'hype' surrounding him, all signs point to greatness.

At the end of the first half in the other match, Honduras 3 - Jamaica 0, goals by César Vavá Guity (2) and Ramón Nuñez.

Canada will probably have to beat Honduras on Friday or risk having to watch helplessly on Sunday as Honduras and Mexico control their own destiny.

What's the first tie-breaker should there be three identical 2-1 records at the end of the tournament?

First, goal differential from all 3 matches, not just between the tied teams.

- from XVII of the Comp regs

"5. At the end of group play, if two or more teams are equal on

points (including ties among third place teams), the manner in

which teams will advance to the next round will be resolved as

follows and in the order indicated:

a. The result of head-to-head competition between the two

tied teams;

b. The difference between goals for and goals against from all

group matches;

c. The team having scored the most goals from all group

matches;

d. Failing this, the qualified team shall be determined by a

drawing of lots carried out by a member of the Organizing

Committee."

Canada defeats Mexico 2-1 at world under-20 soccer qualifier in Honduras

http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/shownews.jsp?content=R012639AU

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (CP) - The Canadian under-20 men's soccer team beat Mexico 2-1 on Wednesday night in its opening match at a CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the World Youth Championship.

Midfielder Ryan Gyaki of Calgary scored both Canadian goals after Mexico opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Gyaki tied it up in the 25th and put Canada ahead in the 40th minute. Canada plays Honduras on Friday and Jamaica on Sunday. The top two teams in the group advance to the 24-country finals this summer in the Netherlands.

Canada is hosting the 2007 World Youth Championship.

The U.S., featuring 15-year-old star Freddy Adu, was the class of an earlier CONCACAF qualifying tournament, finishing 3-0-0 while outscoring its opposition 10-1. Panama also booked its ticket to the finals, finishing second on goal difference.

Also qualified for the June 10-July 2 World Youth Championship in the Netherlands are the host Dutch, South Korea, Japan, Syria, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

Canada enjoyed its best ever showing at the 2003 world tournament, losing to Spain in extra time in the quarter-finals in the United Arab Emirates.

Coach Dale Mitchell's team is co-captained by defender Nikolas Ledgerwood and Gyaki.

The 18-man roster includes four players born in 1987 who will be eligible for the 2007 championship in Canada: midfielder Jaime Peters, goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, midfielder Mike D'Agostino and forward Will Johnson.

I am shock to say the least that I was completly wrong on Mister Mitchels starting line up. He certainally was a game winner by all counts and outclassed the mexicans opposition and defence.

Mostly to my surprise Jamie Peters WHo I thought was the player of the game for both teams. And certainally raised my ebrows on his talents specially in the corners 1 on 1. Gyaki I knew coould get the job done as well as Dejong all three played really well. But most of all it was a team effort and deserved the win by even more goals then 2.

Mexico really did nothing after they had scored changing there formation to a 3- 5 -1 from a 4- 4- 2. And Canada Dominated most of the game after that change. I appeared that Mexico from the start where very confident over Canada till Canada scored and Mexico just simply where surprised of the gaol and never had a chance at all in the remaining game as they appeared to very fustrated with Canada attack and goals by gyaki but most of all containing Peters.

So Im glad that Canada moves to the next game and I will enjoy the ride from now on smoke my cigar and enjoy

Mexico dominated in the first 5 to 10 minutes of the match!

after the goal the switched to 3-5-1 to counter the attack of Canada form a 4- 4- 2- why I dont know but who cares!

When Canada scored from a cross and fortunately the ref did not see the hand ball that was touch by Johnson Gyaki was there to put it in.

After that Mexico fell apart big time the play of Peters in my opinion the player of the match along with Dejong and Gyaki was tremendous, However Johnson did not fair in well with these others and did not do much

On the other hand the Canada defence did well except leaving a Mexican open for just a second to long and he scored just inside the 18 yard box after that mexico appeared to be overly confident but the 1 st goal by gyaki just did a complete turn around Mexico was on edge and was till the endo fo the game.

If i had to rat e Canada in this game i would gie them 7.5

Mexico a mere 5.5

If yo need any other information let me know your qquestions I be happy to help anyone to give a discription of play by play.

Gyaki Scores Twice in 2-1 Win Over Mexico

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – Canada’s U20 National Team opened its CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over regional powerhouse Mexico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Mexico opened the scoring against the run of play in minute 17 but the Canadians stormed back to take the lead before the interval, courtesy of a first half brace from Calgary’s Ryan Gyaki.

Canada then stamped it’s authority on the tournament’s curtain-raiser by limiting the Mexican’s to long range shots throughout the second half. Mexico’s only real chance to equalize came late in the second half when a Mexican striker found himself in alone on goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar (Grimsby, ON) but the Canadian closed the gap quickly, forcing an errant lob.

Canada caused the tricolores fits along the flanks with Marcel De Jong (Toronto, ON) and Jaime Peters (Pickering, ON) outpacing their defenders on a regular basis. De Jong providing the cut-back for Gyaki’s first goal and it was Peters’ cross that sliced open the Mexican defence for the winner.

“I am very pleased with our performance this evening,” said Canadian Head Coach Dale Mitchell during his post-match press conference.

“Apart from the two goals, we could have grabbed a few more,” continued Mitchell. “I certainly think the result was a fair account of how well we played.”

“But, qualification is never decided after the first match. We still have to put together two more quality games against two talented teams to solidify a place in the Finals.”

Canada will now prepare for its second match of the tournament on January 28th against the host nation Honduras. Honduras opened its tournament with a 4-2 victory over Jamaica in the second match of the night. Canada will play Jamaica on January 30th.
