Okay, the 18 guys (and maybe one or two others in case of injury at training) , whoever they are, are certainly now in San Pedro Sula getting ready for Wednesday night's match against Mexico, at 17:30 local time, equivalent to Winnipeg Central Time (6:30 pm EST), part of a double-header with the Honduras-Jamaica match following at 20:00 local.

From Alberto's posts we know that Dylan Hughes, Lalli, Edgar, and Lombardo are probably not there. Which other's have been cut?

What are the guesses for the starting positions?

In terms of following the match, does anyone have any leads for match trackers or radio links?

Here's hoping that Dale Mitchell has our boys prepared and that they do well in Honduras this week. We certainly need some positive results somewhere and we have some great kids in this group.

"And Hughes has a Cold"

How serious can a cold be?

I'm convinced Mister Alberto, your 4-4-2 looks pretty effective. Still, I'm going with pace down the wings to keep the opposing fullbacks pinned down and supply plenty of crosses for Uccello to bang home, Rosenlund the distributor, Gyaki the hard man off the bench when a destroyer is needed.

---------Begovic-----

-----Ramalho----Hainault

Ledgerwood-----------Kassaye

----Schiavoni----DeJong--

Peeters---Rosenlund----Johnson

---------Uccello--------

Debilitating enough, I suppose. I have a cold and fatigued much quicker playing ball hockey the other day. I guess it's just due to the restricted breathing.

Should only knock him out for a game though, I'd hope.

Do these guys have to undergo drug testing? It makes a difference when you have a cold if you can't take anything for it.

I'm sure they do.

Hopefully the team will make it to Holland so guys like Hughes, Lombardo and Edgar (not to mention young JDG) can join up there.

Those guys would make this team a truly great one. I hate too say it, but it's probably true, the 18 chosen look pretty ordinary. Big ask to get through a tough group, playing in the land of malaria and machetes, with this team, but I trust Mitchell to get the job done.

Alberto,

You deleted your post after I deleted mine. But after thinking about it, I wish I wouldn't have. So if you have the means, please do inquire and see what you can find out about Hughes. Specifically, why he keeps showing up at Canada camps and play for Wales and why the CSA keeps inviting him. If I am not mistaken Hughes was selected for the last U20 team that went to the UAE. But when the team departed the camp in Turkey to go to the UAE, he bolted from the squad fearing that he would cap tied to to that siberian hinterland called Canada.

What I would be curious to know is if the CSA has ever asked him who he wished to commit to internationally. And if its Wales, why do they keep calling him to camps instead of other committed Canucks who dream it is to play for Canada and for who the dollars invested in teh camp would offer a return on investment to canada instead of Wales.

All future internationals...

for Wales, Italy, England and Holland.

Yea I'm bitter, but are these guys are hedging their bets on Canada qualifying? I mean, c'mon he's not going because he's got a cold?

That's not quite what happened, IIRC. I think he was invited to go to Turkey for the final training camp, which was still going to have two people cut from it. He elected to stay with his club which made Mitchell's decision of which striker to cut for him, leaving Hainault as the only player who ended up getting cut from the preliminary roster for the final one of 20 (or was it 18). But he never bolted from any camp that he accepted an invite for.

Lombardo & Edgar have both committed to Canada in the past, they are injured this time round and shouldn't be put in the same bracket as players who haven't quite committed to Canada yet. Edgar even came to Kingston to cheer on the senior team against Belize.

According to the CSA report of the pre-WYC match in Turkey (and it is strange to see CSA even mentioning this, but he was a hot publc prospect even then) :

"Dylan Hughes was invited to the training camp in Turkey but turned down the invitation in order to remain with his club Kaiserslautern, thus eliminating him from the final selection."

Who knows what the situation is between the CSA and Hughes? I don't buy this cold thing for a minute, and he is probably back to normal duty in Germany now none the worse for wear. My gut feeling is that Hughes is still sitting on the fence, and not prepared to commit with Canada. We may never know the true story, but I suspect that it is not the CSA's fault, other than letting him sit on the fence for too long. I still suspect that he was cap-tied to Wales as a result of playing a full 90' against Latvia in a sanctioned friendly last August 18 (his playing against Jamaica in Florida at the July camp was just an exhibition, so would not have cap-tied him to us), and he was not prepared now to sign the documents to make the final and irrevocable switch. Without this, we would have been subject to eligibility forfeit of any matches he played in in Honduras this week, as the other teams do their research and would have had nothing to lose from a challenge.

When we are asked in the future by our fellow fans of the game from other countries the then-tired refrain of "How did DH slip through the cracks?", we may just have to shrug our shoulders and say "who knows?", as we do with you-know-who. Ultimately, however, it is not in this situation the CSA's fault, but rather the case of the player putting the CSA in an untenable position.

I recall it slightly differently in that it was a last minute decsion that he made despite the fact that Mitchell had held a spot for him. Then Mitchell was forced to find a replacement for him.

To be clear, if you are not committed to play for Canada then don't invite him. Or, if you ( as a player) are not sure which country you intend to represent internationally, then don't waste the valuable resources and efforts of coaches and national associations by attending the camps. To our knowledge, has deGuz jr ever conducted himself this way? to my knowledge No, and I would call that a sign of having class.

I am not sure how we can move forward as a soccer nation if the perception becomes that Canada is some sort of farm team for Euro sides. Espeically sides like Wales. Do we the kind of player who will play for us only if he is not good enough to represnt Wales?

To be a broken record once again, I'm going to focus on the players who are there and not spend anymore time considering what might have been with other players. Injuries, mixed loyalties or club conflicts are all par for the course for Canadian soccer.

Shame that some good players will miss out, but time to move on with those who are physically and mentally able and committed to Canada. For the record, I believe some of those missing would be with the team if they could and have shown commitment in the past.

Best of luck to Dale M and squad, hopefully something will happen to lift all our spirits.

Perhaps. But I hope the CSA did not invite him to the camp again, for fear of potential critism from the one or two folks who have turned CSA bashing into a major industry.

As far as the player himself, I figure that most of best athletes in a team environment have the personality and character traits that inspire others to perform well. Often its these traits that make teammates work for them to help them distiguished themselves. But what do these actions by Hughes say about his Character and personality?

Article on Canada from a Honduran paper:

http://www.laprensahn.com/deportes.php?id=1135&tabla=January_2005&fecha=20050125

Rough Translation:, my comments in square brackets

“WE HAVE TO OVERCOME THE AZTECS”

San Pedro Sula- The Canadians’ only thought now is to win their first challenge against the powerful team from Mexico. Yesterday they had light training at this city’s Estadio Olímpico.

They only did calesthetics and stretching, since coach Dale Mitchell did not want to exhaust the side. "Although we arrived tired from the long trip, we will be ready for [serious training] tomorrow", said the strategist.

As expected, he not is very concerned about Honduras at the moment, since there is those Mexicans to worry about now. "I’m just not interested in the Honduran team now. It is not that I underestimate them, but at this moment our first rival is our concern", said Mitchell

THE VENUE

The North American coach knows the Estadio Morazán [The other stadium in San Pedro Sula, where the match will be held] since he had been there with the senior team. "It is a very beautiful venue and we are looking forward to playing there."

"The format of the championship is very difficult, since our young players are not accustomed to playing matches with such frequency ", referring to the three games that will they will face[over the course of only 5 days].

RANCHEROS [a reference to Mexican Country and Western music, probably referring to a John Wayne type of tough attitude in the face of adversity]

Mitchell knows that the big rival to beat is Mexico, and much time has been taken to analyze them. "They are a team whose players are great technicians, so it will be the most complicated match, but I am optimistic. Honduras has good players, and in addition they are playing at home; and Jamaica will cause us problems with their players’ great conditioning and speed ".

One of the defenders on the Maple Leaf side, Carlo Esquivoni [i assume this is Schiavoni], added that, "We are focused on our mission, we know that the Hondurans live for soccer and we do too. There are many people who underestimate the ability of our team, and we are going to show them otherwise".

FROM HIS EXPERIENCE [meaning in this context, his prediction from what he knows]

Canada's coach, Dale Mitchell, said that it is too complicated to predict what will happen in this world qualifying tournament, but is confident that they will be one of the qualifying teams.

How's that for a nickname for Carlo Schiavoni..."Ranchero"![8D]
