Is Bretos on the sauce?

I often think that when Bretos is calling a match. Some of the 'battles' that the two guys have are both priceless and pointless. Like him as a host, not as a PBP man

He must have gotten wasted with Allen Hopkins on Saturday. How could someone who watches so much soccer and who makes a living from the sport still have no clue about the rules of the sport? Did anyone else see the Schalke x Bremen match on Saturday? I counted 8 times Hopkins mentioning that the Schalke goal should have been ruled-out for offsides. Clearly it was ONside (by about 10 feet). What a peabrain! It's annoying as hell too! Here I am trying to enjoy the game, then you have a beautiful game-winning goal in a critical match, the 60,000+ in the stadium go nuts, and all I can hear is Hopkins bitchin' about some linesmen's flag that should have been raised. What game was he watching?

This goal has been very controversial in Germany with the coaches of both teams calling for the passive offside exemption to be scrapped. A pass was made to a Schalke's Asamoah who was not offside. He then passed it to Ailton who scored. Ailton was offside during the initial pass to Asamoah and used his advantage to put himself in a better position although Asamoah's pass to him was not offside. Even Schalke's coach admitted Ailton's initial offside position gave him an advantage on the goal.

Yes, Ailton probably did gain an advantage and if Hopkins said what you just wrote then I'd have no problem with him. The issue is a little more complicated than simply "The linesman blew the call" which Hopkins repeated about 3498 times (<=> once for every swig of watery American beer) during the game.

The referee and linesman did defend their call saying that they did not rule it offside because the pass was received by Asamoah who was not offside and his subsequent pass to Ailton was not offside. The controversy in Germany is not that the lineman or ref blew the call but rather the passive rule that makes calling offside more complicated and open to interpretation. Hopkins should have criticized the rule itself not the linesman or ref.
