Canada invited to play in Japan in May

Canada has been invited to take part in the Kirin Cup in Japan in May. The Japanese Football Federation has offered to cover all of Canada's expenses but the Canadian Soccer Association is checking to see whether it can meet those dates because it is not part of the international schedule. European players should be available but North American-based players may not be able to get time away from their clubs. Japan won last year's tournament, defeating Serbia and Montenegro. Slovakia also took part. Canada's schedule this year already includes the Gold Cup and friendlies against Northern Ireland and Portugal

If the Euro players are available, go for it. We need all the games we can get, & if it doesn't cost us anything, it could be excellent preparation for the Gold Cup just a couple of months away. We have enough int'l calibre players in our pool that we should be able to put together a decent squad even if we don't bring out top team there.

The Kirin Cup is not at a great time for us. It usually is in late June - early July, which would be better for our Gold Cup preparation. It was moved this year to mid to late May for better preparation for Japan, who play away WCQ matches against Bahrain on June 3 and North Korea on June 8 and in the Confederations Cup from June 15 to June 29 in Germany. It's best for our English club players who will be finished the second week of May, but not for the German club players who play right until the end of May. The other leagues where we have players will be busy. We will not be able to get automatic release for our players because it is only an invitational.

The Gold Cup is from July 6 to 24. Under FIFA regs we get 15 days release before the start as it is a continental Championship. In terms of resources, it may be better to concentrate on having 2 or 3 friendlies in Canada during those two weeks (as well as another friendly or two in the international calendar dates of June 3-8, when our players from the non-Scandinavian/Russian leagues will be free).

Also, remember that the World Youth Club is in Holland from June 10 to July 2, and there should be a concentration on preparation for that starting in mid-May for that (we WILL be going) ( remember, this is CSA, who have trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time ). Too bad we couldn't send the U-20 team to Japan for preparation, but Japan views this as a very serious competition.

Although I think that it would be a great tournament, it may be better to wait for a better year to go (next year it will probably be in ealry June, just before the World Cup). Having said that, we could try to string a team of our best over-20's from University and the English/Scottish leagues together as a development tool to take to Japan.

I'm confused, those cup games look like they are at the end of January and early february.

What the heck would Canada be doing there in May?

The imminent matches against Kazkhstan and Syria are just friendlies, they are not part of the cup. The actual dates and teams for the Kirin Cup in May have yet to be released, as they are still in the planning stages. They want to have the teams agreed to before they announce the dates and venues.

Although we may not be able to send the full squad to this tournament, I think the CSA would be foolish not to accept.

Even if we send a mixed team (half prospects, half regulars) it would be benifical. With the Japanese FA footing the bill this cup would not take away much from the CSA's announced budget for games for the MNT. Perhaps we could get the planned 12 Yallop mentioned, plus 2 or 3 more.

Agreed. We can't waste this opportunity and it would provide an ideal situation to provide an international experience to some of our B-squad.

Hmm.. English and Scottish players...

GK:Sutton(Bolton, when he signs:))

LB:Brennan(Norwich) CB:DeVos(Ispwich) CB:McKenna(Hearts,SPL) RB:Serioux(Millwall)

LM:Simpson(Millwall) CM:Bircham(QPR) CM:Grande(Ispwich, when he signs) RM:Peters(Ispwich)

ST:Radzinski(Fulham) ST:Hume(Tramnere)

Subs: Dodds(Kilmarnock), Hastings(Iverness), Pesch(Derby), Lars(Unattached)

I'm not a huge Peters fan, even though I played with the guy, I really don't believe he's ready for the MNT, but what the hell, I'll add him in there for the Canada MNT Players based from Scotland and England. I stuck Serioux right back, because in my FIFA2005 season on PS2, Millwall always play him there haha.

Yallop was on the radio yesterday. In answer to a question about the teams lack of offence at WCQ, he said it is the result of not having a star striker and the strikers not getting good service. He said our opponents all had star strikers who scored 5-7 goals each while our top scorer, De Rosario got only 2 goals.

How about the belgian league and the scandinavian leagues are they in competition during may or would those players ie. Klukowski, Bernier, Occean be available?

Belgians usually finished mid-May too, so Klukowski and any toher Canadians there would also be available. The Scandinavian leagues (except for Denmark, which usually goes to the end of May like Germany) play March to November, so they will not have a league break then).

Since I just arrived back in Japan to live and work for at least a year I would love for ANY kind of Canadian side to show up and play.It would be a great opportunity for anybody who could make up even a B-side. I was living here before, when Canada played Japan in the Confederation Cup, when they had a very strong first half before what amounted to Ono's coming-out party. Can I carry the legendary banners for us if Canada goes?

I am sorry to bring up the Yallop issue again but if he would at least give some honest responsible answers to questions instead of constant BS one wouldn't have to constantly bring up the issue and could have a little more confidence in him. Is there anyone in CONCACAF that is more of a star striker than Radzinski? I can think of a few equals but none superior. Why does he score on a regular basis at all levels but at WCQ after the Belize game did not? Service was bad but this has something to do with tactics and players selected and I think many people feel that our strongest midfield was on the field of the first game against Belize and after that several were never called again. In fact our midfield is our strongest position so why couln't our midfielders serve our strikers. Radzinski has his strengths and weaknesses but so does Wanchope and the coach has to make decisions that benefit his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. Radzinski is miles ahead of anyone on Guatemala yet didn't score for us. Any coach in CONCACAF would take Radzinski as a starter on his team and probably employ a more effective tactic for him to succeed. I certainly felt Radzinski was giving full effort in the games I saw and made some nice plays but like several of our elite players was a disapointment overall. It is part of the responsibility of any coach to ensure that both the elite and regular players on a team perform to top of their abilities.

As for our top scorer De Rosario, why was he playing as a midfielder not a striker? It was obvious quite early that he was not suited for this position. Maybe he would have scored more than 2 goals if he had actually played as a striker. Considering we have one of the most highly regarded young left side midfielders in the world in de Guzman why was De Rosario playing here and de Guzman on the right? Our left side could have been left CB Nsaliwa, LB Jazic or Klukowski, def left mid de Guzman, off left mid Brennan left striker de Rosario or Occean. This would be a left side at least equal if not superior to that of every other team in our group.

I hope we play a lot of friendlies and get everything sorted out. However, I wish Yallop would stop spouting crap that is untrue and start giving us answers with real insight into the team strengths and weaknesses. Instead we hear constant not believable excuses and no acceptance of any personal responsibility. This is again absolutely in line with most of the other comments he has made since we were eliminated from WCQ. If the team was in his opinion not capable of qualifying for the HEX he shouldn't have taken the job. I am willing to accept we didn't qualify and give him another chance but I am not willing to believe this constant BS. If I were hearing some honest and insightful analysis from him I could at least have a little more faith that the team is in competent hands.

Grizzly, I see where you are coming from, but at the same time, I have to ask, have you actually heard Yallop make any of these disparaging comments that have popped up on the board in recent months?

In every interview I've seen with Yallop, he has said nothing of the sort, instead saying that now his focus is on rebuilding and getting us ready for the next WCQ cycle. Pretty much all of the disparaging comments that have been relayed here are second hand reports from the radio or some coach's symposium where context is not given at all, and the people who pass on the comments seem to be a lot less disturbed by them than the ones who never actually heard/saw them at all.

Daniel, he did say that on the radio, its was Team 1040 late Saturday evening.

Grizzly, I'm not sure why he gave those specific responses about the teams lack of scoring. I take your point about Radzinski.

Yallop has admitted the team was not ready and prepared, which is as much a criticism of Pipe as it is of him. I have never heard him explain his player selection choices.
