USA defeats Trinidad & Tobago in U-20 Group A Qualifying; Panama ties Costa Rica

13.1.05 - The USA began the 2005 CONCACAF Under-20 Final Round Qualification Group A with a 6:1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Wednesday evening, while the other encounter, Panama held Costa Rica to a 1:1 tie.

Eddie Gaven scored three times for the host USA (1-0-0, 3 Points) and Freddy Adu and Will John each added another, while Kevin Crooks had the only tally for Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the loss.

The last time the stars & stripes scored six goals in a CONCACAF U-20 Qualifying match was against the soca warriors (6:1) on 9 August 1998 in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.

In an earlier Group A encounter on Wednesday, Costa Rica (0-0-1, 1 Point) jumped out to a 1:0 lead with a goal by Jose Luis Cordero in the 54th minute of the second half, but Armando Gun scored the equalizer for Panama (0-0-1, 1 Point) with 14 minutes remaining.

The CONCACAF U-20 Group A Final Round, which two teams will progress to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship from 10 June – 2 July in the Netherlands, continues at the Home Depot Center on Friday (14 January) when Costa Rica takes on Trinidad & Tobago at 17:30, while the USA greets Panama at 20:00.

The event concludes on Sunday (16 January) in Carson, when Panama faces Trinidad & Tobago at 12:00 and then the USA host Costa Rica at 14:30.
