Guest Ed
Julian de Guzman is rated one of the best defensive midfielders in Germany at the winter break. Coach Lienen is set to sit down to talk contracts while the team is in Spain. He jokes that he would like to sign Julian to a 10 year contract but would be happy with a one year deal at this point, with English clubs on the hunt for him. Here is the kicker list of defensive midfielders; Julian is rated among 2 starters for Germany, Ernst and Ramelow (who he was rumoured to be targetted to replace at Bayer Leverkusen). Internationale Klasse 1. Michael Ballack (Bayern München) 28 (IK-1. MF off.) 2. Levan Kobiashvili (Schalke 04) 27 (K-3. Außen def.) 3. Zvonimir Soldo (VfB Stuttgart) 37 (IK-2.) Im weiteren Kreis 4. Silvio Meißner (VfB Stuttgart) 31 (K-6.) 5. Fabian Ernst (Werder Bremen) 25 (K-3.) 6. Pablo Thiam (VfL Wolfsburg) 31 (-) 7. Altin Lala (Hannover 96) 29 (-) 8. Julian De Guzman (Hannover 96) 23 ( 9. Niko Kovac (Hertha BSC) 33 (-) 10. Carsten Ramelow (Bayer Leverkusen) 30 ( Blickfeld Christof Babatz (FSV Mainz 05) 30 (-) Marco Engelhardt (1. canadiankick97
What I like about that too, is that there is no one rated higher than him that is younger than him. Everyone rated higher then him is in their late 20's or in their 30's (with the exception of Ernst). Higher than OH also.
Guest Ed
Also note that the age given for OH is a typo. He is also 23, a couple of months older than Julian.
Cheeta
The Guz's younger brother is gonna have some pretty big shoes to fill if Julian's progress continues at the rate it has been. Absolutely love watching the guy play. Piss and vinegar. Mean little prick out there sometimes too. Like that. Hope he dosen't grow out of it. Curtis Armada
If this is the young Guz impressive stats then I don’t think he would have a problem filling the older Guz shoes Top Players U19 (A1) Holland http://www.knvb.nl/knvb1/pdf/50_Beste_spelers_A-junioren.pdf Top Scorers U19 (A1) Holland http://www.knvb.nl/knvb1/pdf/50_Topscorers_A-jun_eredivisie.pdf
jonovision
I'm not exactly what the Top Players ("Beste Spelers") ranking is based on. However, it is good to see Jonathan (inexplicably called Javier in the two lists) featured prominently in both rankings. Now we just have to hope he picks the right country. El Hombre
More on De Guz from sky sports. Depor chase De Guzman by Thomas Zeh - created on 11 Jan 2005 Hannover's Julian de Guzman has revealed that Deportivo La Coruna could destroy his plans to sign a new contract with the 96ers. The struggling Spanish club are showing an interest in the impressive Canada international. The 23-year-old midfielder has been one of the revelations in the current Bundesliga campaign but, despite interest from other German teams and French giants Marseille, he has suggested that his future lies either in Hannover or La Coruna. "I am thinking about extending my spell here for one or two more years," he told Kicker. "Possibly with a get-out clause but La Coruna would also be an option." The two-times Spanish champions have failed to live up to the high expectations in Galicia this term and are keen to strengthen their squad ahead of next season. Former Hannover director of sport Ricardo Moar, who is now back at La Riazor, has reportedly made de Guzman a priority on Depor's shopping list. BearcatSA
That's great news about Julian! If he is playing defensive midfield for his club side, then should we be playing him in that role with the national team (as opposed to the right flank or as the attacking midfield playmaker)? Former Hannover director of sport Ricardo Moar, who is now back at La Riazor, has reportedly made de Guzman a priority on Depor's shopping list. Last night on the Larguero radio show here this came up, the reporter said that Depor is looking at a player noone probably had heard of but was right next door -referring to the fact that Hannover are in Jerez in southern Spain doing the pre-season. Mentioned he was capped by Canada and called him one of the revelations of the Bundesliga. Considering Depor has just lost Mauro Silva again to injury, and he is 37, they really need to strengthen the midfield that has been depleted by age over the last few years, they need some feisty but creative people. And would have room for foreigners as most of the Brazilians, ARgentines there, are nationalized.
Andrew W
How do you think JDG would fare in Spain, Jeffrey? I think his qualities would really shine in the Spanish top flight.

I think his qualities would really shine in the Spanish top flight. I think he would develop enormously here, and i am sure he has the level now to do well. Only thing is that in Spain you can't be so cavalier and speculative with your midfield passing, fans don't accept it, coaches either, you have to be accurate and truly creative, ie. be there to open up the attack and make it work. In any case Depor has just recovered Roberto "Toro" Acuña, the Paraguay mid who they had loaned to a Saudi club. But that does not solve their long term problem, I think if Julian were to opt for la Coruña he would be the first piece in a rebuilding program they need to face soon. Acuña is just a stop-gap measure for this season.
BearcatSA
A move to Spain should accelerate his game to "the next level," from a technical standpoint. I hope it happens!
