Biannual versus Quadrennial World Cups.

I seem to recall that several years ago, J. S. Blatter was advocating staging a World Cup tournament every two years as opposed to the four year cycle which has been inplace since the tournament's inception. Looking at this from a Canadian point of view, we would never again be in a position of having to wait three years for the national team to play a competitive match in Canada again. Our national team program could be on-going. Soccer's interest would be bound to increase in countries like Canada, giving the game a greater chance to develop. On the other hand, raditionalists are traditionally opposed to any kind of change and in all probability stand against a biannual tournament. However, would it not be interesting to see the results of a FIFA conducted referendum, where each national association would have one vote in a choice for a biannual or quadrennial World Cup referendum. How would the majority out of the current 205 associations vote? Which countries share Canada's perspective in this? The format for the whole tournament could stay the same, or be totally redesigned. Confederation championships could be scrapped totally in qualifying, throw all the names into one hat and hold home and home pairings. First round Canada versus Brazil. Every two years a final featuring the last 8 could be hosted in one of those countries. No more 15 spots to Europe. Or the Euros, the Copas, the Gold Cups ect. could be used as qualifiers. The options are many, but first a referendum. 2 or 4.

how do you know this is canada's position?

FIFA tournaments appear to be a major inconvenience to the CSA, who have reperatedly shown their incompetence at being able to manage an undertaking of this magnatude. They would probably favour a complete withdrawal from these tournaments. However, like most soccer loving fans, the more international games I could attend, the happier I would be. From a quality point of view I would think that like everything else in life, the more you do something, the more proficient you become at it. So what's your position? Do you want to see more than 4 or 5 internationals played in Canada every four years. Would you like to see the quality of our nationals teams improve? I don't know what you or other Canadians think. That's why I posted the question.

uhm, we can't MAKE the world cup. So what you want to do is make it easier for countries like Canada, which are clearly not good enough to be there, to get in?

because if you just want more games, Canada should focus on tournaments it has a chance of winning, like the gold cup. if we win the gold cup there is the possibility of a big windfall - like invites to the confederations cup and copa america (the latter being highly respected)

baby steps.

If it becomes a 2 year cycle, then the importance of each WC is decreased and the whole spectacle becomes sort of "watered-down". It would also hurt Confed tournaments ie. UEFA would have little time for the Euro Cup (when would they stage it? I can't think of anytime unless they switch years - then the players will never have a summer break).

Sure,if your young and carefree you still have 8 or 9 more WC qualifying campains at least to see Canada make it to the finals. But me.I only have about 5 tops until I'm destined for the wheelchair section.

For us older guys a WC every 2 years gives us more of a chance to see Canada make it to the finals before we're watching from that great supporters section in heaven.[xx(]

However,I have to agree that part of the greatness of the competition is that it only comes around every 4 years and when Canada does make it again it will feel soooo sweeeet.
