Following the lead of the Eircom (League of Ireland) League . The League of Wales may change their schedule to a Spring to Fall season.

You know even though this is not the tradional time for British Isles soccer this may be a good idea even for Scottish soccer as the English game seems to over-shadow all other footie in the Isles. ( apologies to Old Firm fans ). But then again I like that Republic and Northern Ireland leagues play two different seasons.......oh well who said logic was involved in discussion boards.

A calendar season for especially wet, cool Wales (and Britain as a whole) is a very good idea. Playing and watching in the stands in November to March can often be harsh.

The fall to spring season is not a good idea now for Britain and other cooler countries, although a great idea for the Mediterranean and other hot countries where it is too hot to play in the summer, but even then with the advent of post-war lighting that problem has been largely dealt with by night matches. Britain, the mother of modern football (calcio and other pre-variants tended to be played only at festivals, not part of a regular schedule), had rugby and soccer as a fall-spring pursuit for two main reasons: it was an adjunct to the preferred (until the middle of the 19th Century) warm weather cricket (most British clubs started out as Cricket clubs, with football played in the off-season to keep in shape) , and it was played at public schools then when school was then in session. When professional soccer started in the 1870's, the season was kept out of tradition.

But the really great thing about the Fall-Winter-Spring season is that all the Cup Finals and championship deciders are held in beautiful May weather. Call me romantic but I find it all very symbolic after the long slog through the winter. Plus, winter football is what gave England it's own particular style that emphasizes power and pace. While it may be ****e at winning international tournaments it's lots of fun to watch in its proper context!

Mike.
