amacpher
Wow! That's the most incredible draw EVER! Not only 5 mouth-watering matchups but all of them, except Milan x Man Utd, are very even matchups too. Its almost as if they fixed it to be #1 v #2 (Chelsea x Barca); #3 v #4 (Juve x Madrid); ... all the way to #15 v #16 (Liverpool x Leverkusen). canso
Tough draw for the English clubs, Chelsea and ManU getting the most difficult opponents they could! Lehman vs Kahn is a great subplot to the Arsenal-Bayern draw, those guys do not like each other! Could see Stalteri in the quarterfinals, but he's up against two very fast and skilled attacking wingers in Malouda or Govou, depending whether he's left or rightback. bettermirror
this is incredible. how about the stam returning to old trafford subplot! this is going to be sooo fun. for once the best team may truly win the champions league rather than getting two "soft" rounds ahead of the semi-finals. for once having more than two teams from any one league enter the champions league is looking like a good idea. (i for one don't enjoy seeing 4 english, 2 dutch etc...)

No way. Inter they are still undefeated (15 season, 6 champions league). I don't think Porto will be able to beat them. I would agree that this match will great to watch. However, Inter's quality is superior to Porto, with players like Adriano, Martins, Davids, Emre, Cordoba, Zanetti. If htey can pick a good keeper during the coming transfer window, they'll be unstoppable in my opinion.

SeanKeay
I disagree in so many levels, This game will be a boring defencive battle... boooring ...Anyways I dont kno, Porto beat chelsea in a huge game, and were down a goal. I just see Porto as a clutch team and plus they are the champs. Inter just dont tickle my fancy and plus upsets are bound to happen and this one seems likly

How many games have they won? Oh wait ... you were being sarcastic. How else would Cordoba be in that list.

By that response, you must be thinking about Italy's international matches. Have you been watching Inter of late? I agree they are supreme master when it comes to ties this season. (7 wins and 14 ties season and champs league) Have you watched the Juventus-Inter match a couple of weeks back? It was end-to-end soccer at its greatest. Inter-Messina match, 5-0 final. Last match they come back late to tie , Vieri scoring late. Toldo is-was great for Inter however this season is not the same, as Toldo and Inter seem out of synch. Rumour has it that he may end up in the English Prem. Stats YR---NAME-----GP 2001 Toldo----42 2002 Toldo----50 2003 Toldo----43 2004 Toldo----15 Bakcup keeper 2001 Fontana--4 2002 Fontana--2 2003 Fontana--3 2004 Fontana--8 Fontana('67) is older than Toldo ('71) so it is not a question of youth coming throught the ranks. quote:Originally posted by SeanKeay Anyways I dont kno, Porto beat chelsea in a huge game, and were down a goal. Inter has the firepower to put in the goals this season, unlike previous seasons. They have so much that last game Alvaro Recoba was not even on their bench last game! edit: typeos
amacpher
Inter is the most exciting team in Italy by about 8 light years but they're playing Porto. Hence, the game will be a snoozer. I mean nobody can be more exciting than Monaco last year and look what happened in the final.
bettermirror
no one expects manchester united's staunch defence to hold out against milan? c'mon. they simply do not lose european games. and the ones they do lose is with a reserve squad because they have already advanced. i almost wouldn't say it's milan vs. mufc but whoever wins the ferdinand v. sheva, keane v. kaka, scholes v. gattuso, and van nistelrooy v. nesta battles will win the match. both teams have strength at all eleven positions, and is far too mouthwatering. this will be the highlight and should never be scheduled for the same day as the madrid match (as we have seen they show madrid even when it's a pseudo-meaningless match with ZERO fans!). kaka may be in for a lesson, but keane may be exposed horribly. i pick experience. nesta and maldini can probably corral van nistelrooy but with smith, rooney, giggs, and ronaldo roaming it's a tough ask to double team rvn. gattuso and pirlo are in for a surprise with the re-emergence of scholesy and i expect him to be the match winner. shevchenko will get at least 1 goal in the 2 matches. ferdinand is good, but silvestre may get exposed by crespo's off-the-ball runs opening space for sheva. Free kick
quote:Originally posted by SeanKeay The winners are Juventus Porto Chelsea Bremen Liverpool Monaco Milan Arsenal Don't know if you've had a chance to watch Balcelona or not this year on the tube. Rogers SN had them on a couple of weeks ago against Malaga. A game that they won 4-0. But Barca looked awwsome and were, arguably, the most impressive club side that I have seen this year. Chelsea has also looked good but, I have to think that the the catalans are the team to beat this year. That should be the match to watch as I think that the winnner of that one could end taking it all. Yes, I have to concure that these are super matchups. DJT
I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like this draw. Too many big clubs facing each other too early, so half of them will be eliminated at the beginning of March. It's like amacpher said, 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 -- that's not a good draw. I mean, sure, Real Madrid vs. Juventus is mouth-watering, but then when the winner faces PSV or Monaco in the next round it will be a step down -- the matchups should be getting bigger as the tournament progresses! SeanKeay
Tony, i watched that 4-0 game.. against malaga and it was a disgusting game to watch, it didnt seem like the malaga was defending. I dont kno, barca just seem over hyped right now. I really cant see them defending well against guys like drogba, robben, duff....Thats the problem with the spanish leagues, all flash no defence. Chelsea have such a strong defence and now there scoring too

Grizzly
quote:Originally posted by SeanKeay Porto beat chelsea in a huge game, and were down a goal. The problem with this statement is that it was a huge game for Porto but an absolutely meaningless game for Chelsea. Were Chelsea playing for qualification or even 1st place in the group the result would have been different. Porto got lucky by getting the last game at home with Chelsea having nothing to play for while CSKA and PSG had to play a fully motivated Chelsea. Otherwise I think Porto would have at best tied Chelsea and CSKA would have advanced.

Pull out the tape of last month's Barca x Madrid game! Or Barca x Milan for that matter. Of course guys like Ronaldo, Owen and Zidane are not in the same class as those 3 you just mentioned. I think Chelsea is a bit overrated solely because of the price-tags on their players. Example: a few months ago everyone knew that Cisse was the best striker coming out of France. Now just because Chelsea overpays for Drogba, everyone is talking like he's Brazilian? quote:Originally posted by DJT guess I'm the only one who doesn't like this draw. This is not a big worry this season since all the big clubs advanced past the group stage. We'll still have more big clubs in the quarters than last year, regardless. Altho it does suck in a way to go thru 2 months of relative calm and then have Man Utd x Milan and Barca x Chelsea games playing at the same instant.
