New look for the USL

Recommended Posts

Looks pretty good, along with the site they have up now with all the 2005 teams listed there. If you notice in the USL second division they have the old Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the Charlotte Eagles who I guess jumped down from the A-league a few years ago. I wonder if they are going to follow the European style of relegation and promotion. I would like to see it. In the PDL they have the Chicago Fire reservese listed in the great lakes division. Its weird that only one MLS side has it reserves playing in that league. They would probably tear it up you would think.

I would also like to see the USL move to a relegation and promotion system but I think at this stage it is probably not feasible economically. There is a substantial difference in the cost of operating Division One and Division Two clubs I'm sure, especially with the Division One national flat table and I doubt a bump up to Division One would produce a sufficient increase in income to cover the cost delta for most Division Two clubs.

The USL just released it's new logo on it's new look web site. It all looks nice and professionnal. What do you guys think???

The changes are all minor. The Web site and logo are very similar to the previous versions, so it's no big deal (though if I had to choose, I prefer the previous logo). Much more important is Web site content, which at this time is exactly the same as before (just wrapped up differently), which is pretty good but there are some gaps that will hopefully be filled in.

By the way, could anybody tell me what happened to a-league.com? or what the name changed to

It still works, but right now access to it is intermittent (sometimes it won't load), so maybe that's the problem you're experiencing.

Why, oh why, did they use a flaming ball? Haven't we learned from the Aviators?

Every one of their previous logos has had a flaming ball: USISL, USL, A-League, PSL, D3, PDL, W-League, Super Y-League, I-League. See http://www.logoserver.com/USL.html. The flaming balls in the first versions of all the logos looked the same, and the flaming balls in the recent versions of all the logos looked the same, so I guess the flaming ball (together with the text font) was supposed to be a symbolic unifier for all leagues under the USISL/USL umbrella. Now that all of these leagues have the same logo where only the banner at the top changes according to the league, the use of a flaming ball as a unifier isn't necessary, though perhaps they wanted to keep that link to the past.

It's incredible how many times the names and logos have changed within this league alone (never mind the myriad others in Canada and the United States). While I understand the need for marketing, I really think this is all secondary. I mean, how much of an effect have name and logo changes had? If anything, too many changes have a negative effect, because they suggest a lack of consistency, weak development of tradition, and even instability (many times I've heard non-fans say stuff like "the leagues and clubs are always changing, how can I get hooked?").

Yeah, thanks Cooks. I hadn't visited for a while and so wasn't aware of the new domain name.

"a-league.com" does still work, and it's registered for one more year so it should continue to work over that time (unless they want to sell it to Australia -- it looks like someone there bought "a-league.org" last month, and possibly "a-league.net" as well, so they might be interested!).
