UEFA stadium standards ?

I was watching the Panathinaikos vs PSV game and that commentator with the high pitch , know it all , trying to be over cultured voice , was saying in his most irratating ( I know something you don't know ) voice that Panathinaikos' stadium no longer met UEFA standards and would move future UEFA games to the Olympic Stadium along with AEK .

Does anyone know why that is , field size ? You can't tell much on television but it looked okay .

According to a Greek article:

1. unsuitable press box/centre

2. not enough parking

3. bad lighting

4. something about electricity not safe - I didn't completely understand this one

5. not enough VIP seating

6. no anti-doping facilities

7. security concerns

It's basically falling apart!

The move to Olympic stadium is not finalized. I believe they will be allowed to play their UEFA Cup matches at their current stadium.

And it seems like the government is going to be building a new stadium, in conjunction with Greece's 2012 Euro bid.

Here's the story from UEFA although it doesn't really say specifics:

Panathinaikos told to find new venue

Tuesday, 16 November 2004

Panathinaikos FC must find a new home ground for future UEFA Champions League matches after UEFA confirmed to the club today that their Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in Athens was not up to standard.

Decision by 5 December

The Greek champions are permitted to play their third and final Champions League group stage match at the ground but must find another stadium for any subsequent matches in the competition. They play PSV Eindhoven on 7 December in Athens and must notify UEFA by 5 December of their choice of an alternative venue should they progress. Panathinaikos are presently third in Group E.

Alternative

One obvious alternative is the city's Olympic Stadium, which is where AEK Athens FC are playing their home matches at present. On the evidence of the first two group stage matches, UEFA found that many facilities in the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium no longer met the high requirements demanded for the Champions League.

Home of 80 years

Panathinaikos, who have been considering building a new stadium for some time now, have played at the Apostolis Nikolaidis stadium since 1924. For a 16-year period, between 1984 and 2000, they moved to the Olympic Stadium until it was closed for rebuilding ahead of this summer's Games.

Their current stadium only seats 17,000 and as you could see from watching the game there were still some empty seats. This was their most crucial game of the season anyway.... Try moving the game with such a sparse crowd into the Olympic stadium where the stands are a mile away from the track let alone the pitch and the atmosphere would be non-existent.

For numerous reasons, they would sell out the Olympic stadium for Champions League matches.
