canso
"Servette midfielder Paulo Diogo has been left without a finger after a goal celebration went badly wrong. Diogo caught it on a perimeter fence while celebrating during his side's 4-1 win at Schafthausen. The player, who got married recently failed to notice, however, that his wedding ring was caught in the metal barrier and severed the top two joints of the finger as he jumped back down. To add insult to injury, he was then shown a yellow card for his excessive celebration." (sorry)
canso
But it could have been much worse! "Brazilian striker Cristiano de Lima Jr. died Sunday after scoring his second goal and collapsing on the field during a club tournament. The 25-year-old de Lima lost consciousness immediately after scoring in the 78th minute. Doctors at the venue attended to de Lima, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was declared "brought dead." The cause of death was not immediately known." He failed to enforce Law 4 and under the circumstances should have used the unwritten Law 18 known in referee circles as the "common sense law" and not give a yellow card. beachesl
------------------------------------------------------------- I saw someone (other team) lose a finger at a softball game the exact same way (well, he was just leaping over the typical wire mesh fence to get on to the field, and his ring finger got caught in the top strand as he began to execute his leap). I was only about 5 yards away practicing catch and looking at him come onto the field when it happened. It was just like watching a movie in slow motion, it looked so surreal, including the look of horror on his face as he looked back and saw his whole finger, ring included, stuck on top of the fence[xx(]. Never saw him again after that, but word was the hospital couldn't reattach. That was in the 70's and I have refused to wear a ring ever since, except at official non-sport functions. When I tell people about this, they think I am making it all up![}] It may sound ghoulish, but I always wanted a picture of that finger on the fence to prove my point. Sometimes urban legends are not just myths! I gotta copy this story so people will believe me that such things happen. canso
...and an even better reason not to celebrate your goals with too much bravado! A clenched fist, a high five, pats on the back...that's the Canadian way!
canso
So a guy loses a finger and gets carded, another guy dies in the middle of his goal celebration, and now his team gets docked! "Brazilian club Sao Caetano had 24 points deducted on Tuesday after defender Serginho collapsed on the field and died during a match against Sao Paulo in October. Brazil's Sports Disciplinary Tribunal also banned the club doctor Paulo Forte for 1,440 days and club president Nairo Ferreira for 720 days." Bizarre. I would say that if the club is responsible for this, they should outright be relegated.

Holy Crap! That picture looks like it was taken before he even noticed! One time on a trip I got talkin to a recent med student grad who finished his specialization in hands. He told me that when your ring gets caught on something and essentially skins your finger without detaching any bones it's called a "degloving incident." (makes sense) But the interesting part is that - because they cannot just attach any skin to your finger (it will dry up and die due to blood circulation issues) They actually cut a strip open on your abdomen (leaving it still attached though), wrap it around your finger for a feww weeks while it grows onto your finger, and then cut it off of your abdomen. Essentially, your finger is stuck inside your stomach for a few weeks! It sounds crazy to me! But that's what he said.
