South America 2010 Qualifying

"South American soccer chiefs have put off a decision on how to organise the continent's qualifying competition for the 2010 World Cup.

One possible alternative would involve a preliminary stage with two groups of five, where the teams play each other once, followed by a six-team mini-league, possibly held at a single venue.

Another would involve dividing the teams into two groups of five."

No imagination, two groups of five. Pffft!

My suggestion: bring in Mexico, USA and all the other spanish speaking nations of Concacaf into Conmebol to form four groups with four direct qualifiers and two second place qualifiers through a playoff round.

CONMEBOL 2010

Brazil USA Argentina Mexico

Paraguay Uruguay Ecuador Chile

Honduras Costa Rica Colombia Peru

Guatemala Panama El Salvador Bolivia

Canada and the Caribbean nations compete in the Oceania section with..are you ready for this...the British home nations! A final five of Canada, NZ, Australia, Jamaica and T&T, head over to England for the final qualifying tournament.

Oceania 2010

Final Stage: round robin in one location, group winners qualify, second and third crossover in a playoff, home and away.

Group 1 Group 2

Australia England

Canada Eire

New Zealand Scotland

Jamaica Wales

T&T N. Ireland

Was thinking more of a matchup of like with like, until the final act, kind of theme nights;

Penelope Cruz with Selma Hayek (Latina night)

Gwyneth Paltrow with Cameron Diaz (Stockings and garters night)

Angelina Jolie with Pamela Anderson (big lips meets big tips night)

But there's fantasy and then there's fantasy:

Nothing like this could ever happen, unless the Americans were the driving force, and with the Homeland Security issue becoming more of a factor due to reckless foreign policy, the USA would like nothing better than to switch to a "friends only" qualifying section: Britain, Canada and Australia. And with both the Oceania and CONMEBOL in need of restructuring, and British nations failing time and again to qualify from Europe, something close to my suggestion could happen I had the USA grouped with the Latinos mostly to give Canada a better chance initially, but it's more realisitic to have them take the Republic's place.

But then what does reality have to do with anything?

Getting back to reality...

It doesn't look like the South American qualifying structure will change for 2010. In a recent meeting, the conmebol officials unanimously supported keeping the 'everyone against everyone format,' despite Blatter's calls for change due to the 'supposed' physical and mental strain on the players, and the negative effects it has on the fifa calendar. A quote from the Prez of Argentina's Futbol Association: "We dont think the system needs to change, South America has its own reasons to uphold the system. We're not interested in what others think, we want to play our own way, its about solidarity."
