MLS: 40% player roster increase for 2005

Good news for all those guys who were good but not quite good enough to make an MLS roster. Gazidis says the player pool will increase 40 percent next season, thanks to two expansion teams (a dispersal draft is scheduled for Friday) and expanded rosters.

Official rosters will go from 24 to 28. In addition, teams can carry four "senior" foreigners instead of the current three plus three "youth" internationals instead of two. Also, as expansion teams, Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake will be allotted two extra youth internationals for their first two seasons.

"We are emphasizing diversity," Gazidis said. "This will bring different types of players onto the field. We'll be able to experiment a little bit with different styles of play."

That doesn't even take into account the possible MLS reserve league.

Is this an opportunity for the younger player in the USL-1, or a talent drain that will make 2005 less watchable for USL-1 fans?

Yeah, those players necessary to stock two fresh teams, about that.

Think I'll go with what's behind Door #2, Monty.

And it looks like,,,,a watered down poorer quality product.

Well at least Landon D. looks like he's finaly starting to grow up, he should bring some spark to MLS next year. Oh, wait...

Speaking of those two fresh teams. A bit of controversy has come up regarding the two clubs. Chivas LA or whatever are recruiting cheerleaders. The MFL (Mexican league) has a bit of notoriety on that front with their cheerleaders outfits. Real Salt Lake has responded in kind with the announcement of this group as their 'cheer' leaders:

What makes it more difficult is that full-blown youth academies are still several years away, while college soccer is producing less talent than in years past.
