beachesl Posted November 17, 2004 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Well, since Sportsnet is covering it, I'm going to give it a try and watch a little. I may hate it, I may like it, but i'm going to try to have an open mind. Sportsnet has not yet released a schedule of coverage, which starts Sunday. It is very poular in South America, where it is called "futbol de salon" or "micro". When I was in Colombia, just about every town or larger village had a micro pit, a submerged outdoor concrete or asphalt playing area, and there were often crowds of about a hundred. To most South Americans, this is the people's football. The World Cup is in Taiwan, 16 nations in 4 Groups, the top 8 going on to a second round of 2 Groups, followed by semis. Apparently, Iran, Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Ukraine are the favorites to win, Spain are the defending champions. Canada got knocked out in the qualifiers in Panama in the spring. There is also a non-FIFA rival international association, which has many more players, that has an annual world cup with 32 nations. I don't know much about it, except it's based in Brazil. ------------------------------------------------------------------ AS OF NOVEMBER 26, 2004 Group A Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Spain 3 3 0 0 19 0 19 9 Ukraine 3 2 0 1 12 8 4 6 Egypt 3 1 0 2 16 12 4 3 Chinese Taipei 3 0 0 3 2 29 -27 0 # Date Venue Match Result 1 21 Nov 04 16:00 Taipei City TPE - EGY 0:12 (0:6) 2 21 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City ESP - UKR 2:0 (2:0) 9 23 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City TPE - ESP 0:10 (0:3) 10 23 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City EGY - UKR 4:5 (2:0) 17 25 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City UKR - TPE 7:2 (5:1) 18 25 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County EGY - ESP 0:7 (0:5) Group B Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Brazil 3 3 0 0 23 2 21 9 Czech Republic 3 2 0 1 8 5 3 6 Thailand 3 1 0 2 5 13 -8 3 Australia 3 0 0 3 2 18 -16 0 # Date Venue Match Result 5 22 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City AUS - BRA 0:10 (0:4) 6 22 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City CZE - THA 2:1 (0:1) 13 24 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City AUS - CZE 0:5 (0:1) 14 24 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City BRA - THA 9:1 (2:0) 21 26 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City THA - AUS 3:2 (0:0) 22 26 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County BRA - CZE 4:1 (2:1) Group C Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Italy 3 3 0 0 15 5 10 9 USA 3 1 1 1 7 8 -1 4 Paraguay 3 1 0 2 8 11 -3 3 Japan 3 0 1 2 5 11 -6 1 # Date Venue Match Result 3 21 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County ITA - USA 6:3 (2:1) 4 21 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County JPN - PAR 4:5 (3:2) 11 23 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County ITA - JPN 5:0 (2:0) 12 23 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County USA - PAR 3:1 (1:0) 19 25 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County PAR - ITA 2:4 (1:2) 20 25 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City USA - JPN 1:1 (1:0) Group D Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Argentina 3 3 0 0 10 1 9 9 Portugal 3 2 0 1 9 1 8 6 Iran 3 1 0 2 9 13 -4 3 Cuba 3 0 0 3 3 16 -13 0 # Date Venue Match Result 7 22 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County IRN - POR 0:4 (0:2) 8 22 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County CUB - ARG 0:3 (0:0) 15 24 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County IRN - CUB 8:3 (4:0) 16 24 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County POR - ARG 0:1 (0:1) 23 26 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County ARG - IRN 6:1 (1:1) 24 26 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City POR - CUB 5:0 (2:0) Group E Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Spain 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Czech Republic 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Italy 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Portugal 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 # Date Venue Match Result 27 28 Nov 04 16:00 Tao Yuan County ESP - CZE - 28 28 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County ITA - POR - 31 29 Nov 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County ESP - ITA - 32 29 Nov 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County CZE - POR - 35 01 Dec 04 20:00 Tao Yuan County ESP - POR - 36 01 Dec 04 20:00 Taipei City CZE - ITA - Group F Team GP W D L GF GA + / - Pts Brazil 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Ukraine 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Argentina 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 USA 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 # Date Venue Match Result 25 28 Nov 04 16:00 Taipei City BRA - UKR - 26 28 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City ARG - USA - 29 29 Nov 04 18:00 Taipei City BRA - ARG - 30 29 Nov 04 20:00 Taipei City UKR - USA - 33 01 Dec 04 18:00 Taipei City BRA - USA - 34 01 Dec 04 18:00 Tao Yuan County UKR - ARG - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Semifinals # Date Venue Match Result 37 03 Dec 04 18:00 TAIPEI CITY WF - RE -:- 38 03 Dec 04 20:30 TAIPEI CITY WE - RF -:- Match for 3rd place # Date Venue Match Result 39 05 Dec 04 14:00 TAIPEI CITY L37 - L38 -:- Final # Date Venue Match Result 40 05 Dec 04 16:00 TAIPEI CITY W37 - W38 -:- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Fifa site to follow: http://www.fifa.com/en/comp/index/0,2442,Futsal2004,00.html?comp=Futsal&year=2004 The Laws of Futsal (official) http://www.fifa.com/fifa/futsal/laws/2004/LOTG2004_e.pdf Simplified Rules of Game (with pitch layout): http://futsal.com/publications/laws/Summary.htm US Futsal site: http://www.futsal.com/ As I understand it, 2 halfs of 20 minutes each. El Hombre Posted November 17, 2004 Share Posted November 17, 2004 I hope they show some of the games. I play in the futsal league here in Ottawa and it's good fun. I've always wanted to watch a game with real athletes though. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
beachesl Posted November 18, 2004 Author Share Posted November 18, 2004 10 differences you always wanted to know… (FIFA.com) 17 Nov 2004 To help supporters learn more about the game ahead of 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship Chinese Taipei, which kicks off Sunday 21 November, FIFA.com shows you the 10 major differences between the two football games. The five-a-side game developed from its big brother but despite the similarities, futsal has a distinctiveness all of its own. The most fundamental distinctions are the number of players and the smaller pitch - and it is because of these that most of the differences arise. 1 A futsal match lasts for 40 minutes with 20 minutes for each half with a break of no more than 15 minutes. In a knockout stage, a level game after 40 minutes will go into extra time of 10 minutes halved into two 5 minutes. A penalty shootout will occur if the sides fail to break the stalemate after extra time. 2 There are two penalty spots in futsal - one 6m out if a player commits a foul in his own area and one 10m out, to be used after 5 fouls have been committed. 3 Despite the smaller playing area, shorter match and fewer players, futsal has three referees who co-operate in controlling the match. Two referees take care of the process on the pitch, while the other keeps account of the accumulated fouls. There is also a timekeeper on the sidelines. 4 There is no offside in a futsal match so defence becomes different tactically - usually half of the team, the keeper and two other players, having to sit back. 5 Charges, even shoulder charges, are not allowed in a futsal game and will result in a direct free kick. 6 When an attacking player is sent off his side can bring on a fifth player if the opposing side score a goal when they have an extra player. 7 Either team are entitled to call for a one-minute time-out in each half. The coach may request for time-out any time when his team are in possession of the ball. 8 Compared to the disciplined positional play of the eleven-a-side game, swift changes of position make a more effective game plan for futsal. 9 With a shorter duration and smaller space, speed, skill and technique become more important in futsal. 10 In the smaller game played indoors, if the ball hits the ceiling the game is restarted with a kick-in, awarded to the opponents of the team that last touched the ball. The kick-in is taken from a point on the touch line nearest to the place below which the ball hit the ceiling. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
beachesl Posted November 26, 2004 Author Share Posted November 26, 2004 Well, the first round is finished, and they are moving into the second round (2 Groups of 4 teams each). I looked at the schedule for Sportsnet over the next two weeks, and zilch, so it looks like they are not going to exercise their option to broadcast even if they have the rights. Can't say that I am heartbroken, but it would have at least been interesting. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
