Curly
......proposal that the CSA brought forward last year? They had something on the table involving all levels of teams from the A-league down to the top amateur teams. Just curious what is going on and if anyone had any info on this? Luis_Rancagua
Curly, go and ask Kevan Pipe that question. Pipe is the man that made the proposal at the start and in the end he killed the whole project. The more Pipe stays in command of the CSA the more Canadian soccer is going down the tube. DJT
Yup, it disappeared without a word. If I may once again take the opportunity to promote World Football Pages, mattbin and myself , our articles in the October and November issues paint the picture of how this has happened several times over the last few years and criticize the CSA about it. Winnipeg Fury
Allegedly the A-League clubs didn't want to risk a loss to the CPSL clubs. Vancouver (under the old ownership) and Calgary were mentioned. I'm sure there's more to the story. The fact that Canada does not have a national Cup is just another dismal failure on the part of the CSA and further evidence that despite our being 'patient,' it's clearly time for a massive change at the top of the CSA, both in terms of who is leading us and national prioties and agenda. T5
Winnipeg Fury: the CPSL clubs didn't want to risk a loss to amateur clubs in the Canada Cup but in fact did. Any team can get knocked off in a cup type competion and that's what any open cup competion for an national championship would entail. I would think that the "A" League clubs would have trouble fitting in a cup competion in the middle of their league schedule, substantially more than the CPSL teams. Raise the purse to $100,000 and you'll soon see everyone in a Canadian championship.
Michael Crampton
I agree wholeheartedly with T5 - show them the money and everyone will be clamouring to compete. Of course that would take the CSA showing some actual leadership, raising the funds, and organizing a competition. Don't hold your breath... go watch some CPSL Open Cup games instead (if you live in Ontario). Mike.
T5
BHTC Mike: it wouldn't be that hard to do if it were marketed properly. An entrance fee of $1500-$2500, some slick marketing of the games in different locations, advertising, promotion and you could easily cover $100k to $200k for the payouts and expenses to make it happen. The results would most likely have the "A" League teams in the finals but there is an off-chance of others getting there. It would certainly introduce the "A" League teams and players to the rest of the country and could increase their fan base for such effort. The CSA would have to take the lead in any such endeavour but it is certainly some thing to gain attention to the sport in a favourable way. That's the sad thing actually - it really wouldn't be hard to do but it still hasn't happened. I agree with pretty much everything else you've said incidentally. I just reposted my Cup idea on the Can-League thread but here it is again in case you don't see it there. http://www.canadian-soccer.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2903 Mike. Their budgets are often not much more than an elite amateur club. The gap between Winnipeg's best amateur clubs and the CPSL is slim, while the jump to A-league is huge in terms of budget (and quality). Agree completely that the CSA could easily fund a proper National Cup. If they aren't capable they should be sacked.
redhat
quote:Originally posted by Winnipeg Fury They could easily have a sponsor (CIBC, Telus, Saputo, Mita, Adidas) to help with the purse ($80-100,000?) and host it in Montreal or Swangard. Unfortunately, it's too late now. Maybe in Toronto's new stadium by 2006?
