PNE increase Hume offer

Preston manager Billy Davies has confirmed the club have increased their offer for Tranmere striker Iain Hume.

The 21-year-old Canada international is Rovers' top scorer this season with six league goals - and has been Davies' top target since he took permanent charge at Deepdale in September.

The sale of star striker David Healy has forced the Lilywhites boss into the transfer market, and he hopes to conclude a deal quickly.

"We've increased the bid for Iain Hume in the last 24 hours and we are very hopeful that we can get this done," he told the club's official website.

"I've said over the past few days that we've been speaking to certain clubs and this has gone on longer than I had hoped for.

"But that's football and all we can continue to do is speak to the financial people and let them go and do the deal.

"We're very keen to get the player in because he is 21 years old and is an international player with a big future.

"We see him as an excellent addition to the squad and are just waiting for the Tranmere people to come back to us."

As I am going to see Tranmere this weekend vs. Swindon in Liverpool, hope he is not taken off and not played because of the transfer deal, would be a drag.

No way are Tranmere going to sell one of our best players..not when we have such a great chance of promotion..and we've told Preston so. It isn't going to happen...and even if it was, don't talk crazy why would they take Hume off in the game against Swindon just because Preston have made an offer for him? Crazytalk..lol :)

Jinkies! I was just at a Tranmere fan site and people are having kittens worrying about young Iain leaving. I think its obvious that his future lies away from Prenton Park, but I'm not sure that any of the suitors (PNE, Notts F) are good places to go. Iain will likely be in the Championship next year with TRFC. Why move to clubs who might be in League 1 next year.

Now that I have voiced this opinion, we can nearly be assured that Iain's transfer is iminent, as I am nearly always wrong in these kinds of predictions.

According to the Tranmere website, the team has rejected a third "substantial" offer from Preston.

Apparently Hume doesn't want to go to Preston. Go figure.

Brian Little said: "We can't stop them putting offers in.

" I'm not surprised Preston are keen to sign Iain. The surprise is that there are not more clubs because he is playing well at the moment."

Interesting quote. Implies that there isn't that much interest in Hume, other than from Preston.

Looks like Preston's going to stop their pursuit.

Preston's chairman speaking to the Preston website:

"That's correct and I'd like to clarify the situation as I see it with Tranmere Rovers. I first made contact two or three weeks ago and found it difficult to get a figure they'd take. So we made one or two offers, but then on Tuesday the Chairwoman at Tranmere told me that it would have to be £500k for Iain Hume.

"I spoke to Billy then later on, on Tuesday I accepted that and told them we would pay £500k.

"Iain Hume's agent was in Germany on business, but was over yesterday and I received a phonecall late yesterday afternoon off Lorraine Rogers saying that Iain Hume had decided to stay put at Tranmere Rovers.

"There were no more talks about money or anything, I respect that decision. The agent might feel he can get him to a Premiership club in January, that's their prerogative and as far as I'm concerned the situation is closed and we'll look elsewhere."
