Jarrek
http://www.libero.com.pe/2004/OCTUBRE/pdf29/cie.htm Guatemala, sporting a full squad was trashed by Cienciano of Cuzco 3-0 in LA. Not sure if Guatemala had their day off, but surely it makes our Canadian side look bad. Here's the translation: Súper Inca Cienciano defeats Guatemala 3-0 in Los Angeles By Hugo Castillo, Libero Reporter The Red Fury came by Los Angeles and they made it certain that they are one of the top teams in the Americas. The Cienciano squad, recent Champion of the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana, left their mark on Guatemala 3-0, in an exhibition game played in Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, with a Pro-Guatemalan and Hispanic contingent. In the 1st minutes, the game was even, with Guatemala trying to dominate the actions in the game. However, halfway through the 1st half, Cienciano began to show their cohesion and the result was a goal by Cesar Balbin in the 45th minute and German Carty in extra stoppage of the 1st half. The Guatemalan Goalkeeper couldn’t do anything against the goals scored on his net. In the 2nd half, Cienciano waited patiently, while Guatemala tried to ascert itself. However, without much luck, the Central American side, couldn’t get a shot past the Goal Area of Oscar Ibanez, who excelled in excellent form and made outstanding saves. Almost close to the end of the game, a quick counter-attack from Rodrigo Saraz made the score a 3-0 Final for the Peruvian squad.

Like one of my peruvian friends told me years ago: Club teams play together all of the time (Especially in Peru between the two seasons that they play yearly). Sometimes chemistry, knowing where your comrades are going to be can be even more powerful than putting together a countries best players who don't play together too often. Cienciano has great chemistry. They were an afterthought in Peru a few years ago. Now they beat Argentine and Brazilian clubs in huge tournaments. Especially in the case of Canada, with players scattered accross Europe, a team that rarely gets together, a club like Cienciano would be a formidable challenge. The Ref
Hey Dante79, were you old enough to remember Peru's campaign at the 1970 WC. Man that was great, what a terrific squad they had. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Dante79
I wish i would of seen them in the WC 70,78 and 82 but i was born in 79 so i was too young when they last made it in 82! so i never got a chance to see them in the WC!
BrennanFan
I don't think this loss makes Canada look bad at all. In fact it would have been an upset had Guatemala won, since Cienciano is one of the Top clubs in South America. I always thought canada should organize some friendlies against Peru, since they both have trouble getting opponents and proper preparation. Anyways, which is your team Dante? Alianza or U? beachesl
Not quite the A team against the Peru club: Guatemala : Klee; G. Cabrera, Sanabria, E. Cabrera, Morales; Ramírez, Pereira, Thompson, Castillo; Zacarías y Estrada. Subs: Trigueño x Klee, V. Hernández x Morales, Pezzarossi x Ramírez, Dávila x Pereira, Navas x Zacarías vs. Honduras (1-0 Guat win) on October 13: 3. MELGAR Pablo 6. CABRERA Gustavo 7. THOMPSON Fredy 8. ROMERO Gonzalo 11. RAMIREZ Guillermo 13. MARTINEZ Nestor 17. PEZZAROSSI Dwight 20. RUIZ Carlos (off 82') 19. RODRIGUEZ Mario (off 90') 30. KLEE Miguel Substitutions 31. DAVILA Maynor 34. CASTILLO Carlos Something less than the A team in LA. They obviously used the match for trying out some B players (imagine using a friendly for experimentation!), and in fact the Guatemalan forums showed displeasure with the player selection. Also, Guatemala has called up a full A squad for the friendly against Mexico in San Antonio (Novemebr 11)next week. Before they they play Canada on the 17th, they have another friendly in Washington DC against Colombia on Novemebr 13! Considering also that they had 7 friendlies between the June and August WCQ's (including a two week camp in California) you have to give them credit for taking preparation seriously. They definitely deserve to be in the hex, and probably Germany.
