SOCCER SHORTS SAINTLY ACT

Oct 20 2004

FORMER St Johnstone midfielder Nick Dasovic is helping the Perth club discover the stars of tomorrow.

Dasovic, who enjoyed a spell coaching Canada's under age squads, has tipped off Perth boss John Connolly, with four trialists going under the spotlight at McDiarmid Park.

Good stuff.

I think we're going to see more of this type of thing as the older guard (the first big 'wave' of players to go to Europe) take coaching positions in Canada. They still have very good contacts, and can act as a liason for players that may not have a link to Euro clubs.

(Assuming that the four trialists are Canadian, of course)

Canadian mounting a trial bid Oct 22 2004

FORMER Saint Nick Dasovic has set-up a Perth trial for former Canadian U20 skipper Gordon Chin.

Yesterday, Saints boss John Connolly cast his eye over the diminutive midfielder and two Australian trialists in a bounce game against Hibs, although the weather conditions made it difficult to showcase their talents.

He has to be convinced they are a cut above the current personnel, with only two “jokers” to be played before the transfer window re-opens over the Festive season.

Dasovic said: “Gordon was the skipper of the U20 team that finished in the world’s top eight last season. He is on the short side but he has great feet and can run all day.”

Chin, who has a Scots-Chinese background, was a YTS player with Portsmouth and last year featured for Vancouver Whitecaps before moving to Edmonton Aviators.

“Gordon is keen to land a club in Scotland because the playing season in Canada is so short,” said Dasovic, who is assistant coach with the Canadian U20s. “I hope the kid does well because he is really keen to make the grade.”

DASOVIC KEEPS SAINTS POSTED

The Canadian trialist who arrived at St Johnstone this morning has been recommended by ex-Saints player Nick Dasovic (writes James Masson).

“Nick keeps in touch with the club regarding players he feels may be of use to us and we are taking the chance to have a look at this lad this week,” said boss John Connolly.

Saints also have an Irish player and two Australians on trial.

Kevin Rutkiewicz came off near the end during the 1-0 win at QOS on Saturday with a recurrence of his shin injury and is a concern for this week’s home game against Airdrie United.

Meanwhile, Martyn Fotheringham, who has been out injured, will restart training this week.

Sorry, let me rectify myself. He has beaten the record at Odd Grenland for the most goals in one season. He is the fifth leading scorer in the league; however, all the others above him have scored on PKs. He hasn't taken one this year.

Fantastic ! Let's hope he breaks the record next match. You have to wonder how long OO will stay at Odd before a larger club comes calling.

Atiba played 86 minutes as Helsingborgs lost 2-1 to Halmstads. With one more game left they are in 8th place and could theoretically still fall to the relegation playoff spot if a very peculiar set of results occurs in the next round.

Peculiar indeed. Sundsvall and Örgryte are at 11th and 12th (play-off position), 1 and 2 points behind Helsingborg, respectively. If Helsingborg lose (while Örebro and Landskrona don't), they could fall down to the 12th with at least a draw for Sundsvall and a win for Örgryte. The weird thing is Sundsvall and Örgryte are playing each other..

Fulham manager Chris Coleman will be without striker Tomasz Radzinski as the Cottagers bid to end a run of three straight defeats at Birmingham tomorrow.

The Canadian international has been ruled out of the Carling Cup clash at St Andrews after tweaking his hamstring while warming up at half-time in Fulham's 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Also missing are Sylvain Legwinski, Alain Goma and Ian Pearce, who limped off with suspected medial ligament damage.

Provisional squad: Van der Sar, Crossley, Volz, Knight, Rehman, Bocanegra, Boa Morte, Diop, Jensen, Pembridge, McKinlay, Malbranque, Cole, John, McBride.

In League Cup action, Millwall hosts Liverpool.

"Millwall player-manager Dennis Wise surprisingly left himself out of the 16 as one of three changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Cardiff, with Adrian Serioux coming into midfield and Marvin Elliott and Neil Harris replacing Josh Simpson and the cup-tied Barry Hayles respectively.

Defender Djimi Traore was the only member of the Liverpool starting XI tonight who began Saturday's game against Charlton as manager Rafael Benitez opted to rest virtually all his key players."

Serioux picks up a yellow in the 41st, and is subbed out in the 77th minute, losing 0-2. Simpson stays on the bench, possibly being rested.

Final score: Millwall 0 - 3 Liverpool

De Guzman subbed out at 90' (hopefully just to bring someone on) as they beat Kaiserslautern 3-1.

"Hannover 96 3-1 Kaiserslautern: FT Report

PA

HANNOVER, October 26 (Bundesliga) - A Jiri Stajner double eased Hannover to their fourth straight win and ended any pretensions Kaiserslautern had of climbing off the bottom of the Bundesliga.

Ioannis Amanatidis' 26th-minute opener gave Kaiserslautern real hope of an upset at the Niedersachsenstadion.

But Michael Tarnat's (33) equaliser before half-time laid the foundations for Stajner's brace in the 65th and 86th minutes for the upwardly-mobile Hannover.

The visitors' opener really did come out of nowhere, as Amanatidis received a pass from Marco Engelhart with his back to goal before turning sharply and firing past Robert Enke from 10 metres.

Unschooled in the art of holding a lead, it was no surprise when Tarnat powered home a header from a Nebosja Krupnikovic corner for the equaliser.

Both Stajner's goals owed much to the striker's blistering acceleration.

The second came after a desperate, late Kaiserslautern attack petered out and Silvio Schroter put the Czech striker away on the counter, with the striker again finding the net from a comfortable distance.

Despite showing admirable composure for his two goals, Stajner could have had a hat-trick had he not missed a glorious chance in the sixth minute.

A mistake by Kaiserslautern's Timo Wenzel put him one-on-one with Tim Wiese, but he lobbed the ball narrowly over the bar.

Kaiserslautern's first chance came five minutes later when Daniel Stendel won the ball before crossing it to Thomas Christiansen, who saw his header well saved by Enke.

Hannover responded with a 30-yard effort from Krupnikovic, which the 'keeper fisted out for the corner that led to the equaliser.

It was the visitors, however, who came closest to taking a lead into the interval instead of a 1-1 scoreline when a Thomas Drescher cross found the head of Amanatidis, forcing another good stop from Enke.

The hosts made their intentions clear two minutes after the break when Silvio Schroter saw his effort from the edge of the area smothered by Wiese.

Before they retook the lead, Enke once again came to Hannover's rescue when he came flying off his line to foil Carsten Jancker as the giant striker was bearing down on goal.

But the visitors' fragile confidence could not survive going behind and they wilted in the face of opponents quickly becoming used to winning.

Up to fourth in the Bundesliga, and only four points behind leaders Wolfsburg, Hannover may be on the verge of a tilt at the title."

Baros double breaks Lions' hearts

Jon Brodkin at the Den

Wednesday October 27, 2004

The Guardian

A shadow Liverpool team saw off a feisty challenge from Millwall last night but attention was not restricted to the pitch.

A small number of Liverpool fans skirmished with police towards the end, with officers using batons to quell brief trouble in the away section. At least one seat and other objects were thrown at police by away followers. By the finish Salif Diao and the substitute Milan Baros, who struck twice, had sufficed for Liverpool.

Djimi Troare was the only survivor from Liverpool's starting XI on Saturday and Millwall might have taken the lead against a makeshift team in the fifth minute. Darren Ward's long pass left Neil Harris bearing down on goal but a poor first touch enabled Jerzy Dudek to smother.

Harris later headed over from a Jody Morris corner. But by then Millwall were behind to a goal that came during a short spell of Liverpool dominance, culminating in Salif Diao's strike.

It was neatly taken from inside the area after Ward, under pressure from the debutant Zak Whitbread, headed into the midfielder's path. Millwall should have closed down Diao more quickly.

Liverpool might have been expected to gain a greater stranglehold but instead Millwall began to look the more dangerous. They posed a particular problem from set-pieces and Adrian Serioux's long throws. A complaint from Liverpool about Serioux's use of a towel to dry the ball before he launched it deep into the area put a stop to that practice.

Jody Morris used the ball sensibly and Jo Tessem provided moments of concern for Liverpool as the lone striker.

Liverpool found it hard to find any rhythm, yet might have stretched their lead when Florent Sinama-Pongolle set up Neil Mellor, whose weak shot was easily saved.

They were soon grateful for another miss by Harris, who could not force the ball past Dudek. Baros showed him how to finish, sliding in a pass by Stephen Warnock.

Adrian Serioux's honeymoon appears to be over at Millwall. Apparently his game last night was poor. The fans are all over him on the 'hof' messageboard.

Here's a sample of what they're saying:

"I got a text from a non-Millwall supporting mate at half time:

'Has your number 5 ever played football before?'

Pretty much summed it up"

"That was without doubt the worst display I have ever seen from a 'professional' footballer. He didn't win a single challenge and gave the ball away every time he had it."

"0 out of 10 from me, and he only didn't get a minus score because of his throws."

I think he was invited to carry the water bottles, because he didn't make the bench.
