argh1
Thursday, October 14, 2004 Canada Withdraws From World Cup Qualifier OTTAWA – Baseball Canada announced today it would not participate in an upcoming qualification tournament for the 2005 World Cup due to a kidnapping threat in Colombia. While originally intending on participating in the tournament, to be held Oct. 28-Nov. 7 in the cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla, Baseball Canada staff was notified last week by Department of Foreign Affairs officials that a kidnapping threat had been placed on the Canadian team and would be carried out if it were to participate in the competition. Following an executive conference call, Baseball Canada confirmed its decision not to take part in the event. “After thoroughly investigating this matter with all of the appropriate outlets, we believe these threats are serious enough to warrant a decision not to place our team in jeopardy by competing in this qualification tournament, regardless of the ramifications,” said Ray Carter, Baseball Canada’s president. “We remain committed to being competitive at the international level and hope to find some other method allowing us the opportunity to qualify for next year’s World Cup,” he added. The top six countries from the Americas qualifier will advance to the World Cup, set for Sept. 3-17, 2005, in Holland. With Canada’s withdrawal, the qualification tournament now includes seven participating countries. Elias
What I want to know is who are the geniuses who keep awarding Colombia major sporting events? Like whatever tournament that was a couple years ago when our soccer team pulled out. Colombia's has been in a civil war for the last 40 years. What's next the World Cup in Iraq? beachesl
quote:Originally posted by Free kick Also, the World cup was awarded to Colombia in 1986. it ended up getting taken away and movede eventually to Mexico Strangely enough, Colombia was awarded the 1986 World Cup in 1964, when FIFA strangely decided to award the sites for the next quarter century to put off political demands caused by Mexico's unexpected award for 1970. At that time Colombia was relatively peaceful and prosperous, having moved on from "La Violencia" of the 50's, and before the electoral fraud in 1970 and subsequent cocaine demand in the USA caused the marxist and narco-terrorist mushrooming resulting in the hell we have seen over the past 30 years. Argentina, still a military dictatorship, but a very peaceful one with no glimpse of the violence of the 70's on the horizon and democracy looking hopeful was also awarded the 1978 WC at that time (later greatly regretted because of the dirty war, and why Cruyff did not come). The US was almost awarded 1978 in secret talks in 1976 and 1977, but the will to commence the process change was lacking in FIFA. The pressure to award Colombia sports events is political. to show support and belief that normalization will occur, against better judgement.
