IAIN HUME hit both goals as Tranmere beat Torquay United.

The game burst into life in the second minute as Hume slotted home the opener for Rovers from a Gareth Roberts cross.

Torquay were rewarded a penalty in the 15th minute but Steve Woods missed the target.

Alex Russell equalised after 55 minutes with a spectacular over-head kick and, as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Hume was on hand to head home Eugene Dadi"s cross in the 87th minute.

DUNDEE United goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld has been given a 12-week chance to boost his career with club and country. The 25-year-old former Spurs keeper was handed a six-month deal by Tannadice boss Ian McCall just before the summer transfer deadline and expected to spend most of that time as understudy to Tony Bullock. But first-choice Bullock broke his collar bone last weekend, which meant a debut as substitute for Hirschfeld in the 4-2 defeatat Motherwell. The Canadian kept his place for the midweek CIS Cup tie against Clyde and was responsible for United"s first clean sheet of the season as they won 4-0. With Bullock likely to be out for three months, a string of good performances could not only persuade McCall to offer Hirschfeld an extended deal but also help him add to the 16 caps he has already won representing Canada.

Matondo played 65 minutes before being subbed out in Åtvidaberg's 1-0 win over Friska Viljor. The club is now at 4th, four more games to play and six points up to Assyriska on the promotion play-off spot.

Assyriska defeated Stamatopoulos' Enköping 4-1, in what doesn't seem like Kenny's best match. No comments to be found so far. Enköping is now at 13, 1 point above the relegation line.

Stephen Ademolu played 90 minutes as Trelleborg lost 5-0 away to last years champions Djurgården. With four games left to play, they are dead last, 9 points away from safety and hasn't won a game since May. You might as well consider them relegated.

THREAT TO FULHAM BID TO GET YOURI.

Birmingham and Everton are trying to hijack Fulham's bid to sign Youri Djorkaeff.

The French forward was due to join the club on a one-year deal last week, but the move stalled over personal terms.

As a free agent, the usual transfer window rules don't apply to Djorkaeff, who can move to any club during the season.

Fulham's interest in the 36-year-old has alerted David Moyes and Steve Bruce, both of whom are desperate for forward cover.

Everton did not sell Wayne Rooney until transfer-deadline day so had little opportunity to sign a replacement, while Birmingham's star striker Mikael Forssell is out for six months with a knee injury.

Despite Andy Cole's suspension, Coleman's need for Djorkaeff will be reduced if Tomasz Radzinski continues his recent run.

The Canadian has now scored three goals in two games, including the winner in Saturday's 1-0 Premiership victory over Southampton.

Coleman said: 'I am pleased for Tomasz. He has worked hard. Since he has been here I have played him in numerous positions and he has a good attitude.

'He has worked hard in training, got a couple of goals in the cup during the week and got another good goal on Saturday. I think he deserved it.'

Football: Two-goal Hume lifts the gloom as Rovers go second

LEAGUE ONE Torquay United 1 Tranmere Rovers 2

IAIN HUME took his manager at his word by shining brighter than anyone in a Tranmere Rovers shirt on a grey afternoon at Plainmoor.

The little Canadian striker fittingly supplied the two goals that secured Tranmere"s first away win of the League One campaign.

Hume"s effervescent contribution was the perfect response to the challenge laid down by Brian Little for Tranmere"s young players to show their quality in the low profile games as well as those times when the spotlight is on them, such as last Tuesday"s Carling Cup encounter with Portsmouth.

Ryan Taylor also rose to the occasion on an afternoon when Little was less than enamoured with Tranmere"s overall performance.

The manager was blunt enough to suggest Rovers were lucky to secure a victory that lifted them into second place in the table, behind runaway leaders Luton who visit Prenton Park next weekend.

The afternoon began well for Rovers. A slick link-up down the left between Jason McAteer and Gareth Roberts enabled the Wales left-back to float a teasing chip towards the edge of the six yard box where Hume met the dropping ball with a sweet, side-footed volley into the top corner of the net.

Martin Gritton missed a penalty for the hosts, before Alex Russell equalised with a 55th-minute scissor-kick from just inside the box.

But Rovers reclaimed the lead on 86 minutes when Eugene Dadi measured another good cross from the right and Hume headed home at the far post.

Little and his senior players reckoned the result could give their season fresh impetus.

But the Tranmere manager was less enthusiastic about the manner in which it was achieved against a Torquay team struggling in the bottom three.

He said: "We were pretty ordinary at times and pretty good at others.

"Overall I thought we were lucky, but it"s a great result and football is a results-orientated business.

"If anyone was going to win the game for us it had to be Iain Hume. He was the only one who was buzzing all the way through. ""

Little added: "The Torquay players gave everything they had. ""

Torquay 1 Tranmere 2

TORQUAY manager Leroy Rosenior tipped Tranmere for promotion after two goals by Canadian striker Iain Hume snatched a win.

Rosenior admitted: "That's the best we've played this season and I am very disappointed for the players that we've come away with nothing.

"We put them under pressure in the second half, left them with only scraps to feed off -and they still won."

Hume volleyed in Gareth Roberts' cross after only two minutes and then headed the winner three minutes from time.

Alex Russell had netted with a scissor kick in the 55th minute.

And a clumsy challenge by Rovers keeper John Achterberg on Martin Gritton earned Torquay a spot-kick -only for Steve Woods to blast wide.

DeGuzman played 90 and picked up a yellow as Hannover lost 1-0 at home to Arminia Bielefeld in a rare mid-week Budesliga game (due to postponment). On the weekend he played left back due to Tarnat having the flu but with Tarnat's return he moved back to his usual midfield spot today.

Tyler Rosenlund is a great young prospect. I know I've said this numerous times, but I saw him play with the U17s during qualification in Victoria, and he impressed me a lot. He's got a great brain for the game, is tireless like Stalteri, though probably more naturally skilled. (One can only guess at these things, I know.) Hope to see him with our next batch of U20s, and hope to see him in Europe soon.

UCSB is the college Rob Friend attended before going to play in Norway. So there,s a chance those guys will maybe play pro soccer after their college carreer. And we have alot of our current national team players who have played college soccer......Stalteri, Bent, Occean, Simpson, Sutton etc......

Rosenlund is the one among the 3 who's seeing the most action, starting 7 out of 8 games.

Simon Rayner starts for Lincoln City in a LDV Vans match

Great game for Rayner, despite the loss:

Chris Beardsley scored the only goal of the game to send Doncaster through to the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy at the expense of Lincoln.

Youngster Ben Jackson was at the heart of the action as he burst through the City defence in the 77th minute, but saw his shot pushed out by Lincoln keeper Simon Rayner. The youngster then won the ball back and set up Beardsley who rammed the ball home from six yards.

Jackson, a prolific scorer for the Rovers youth team, got through again two minutes later, but Rayner made an excellent save.

Doncaster's deserved win came at a price however when skipper Steve Foster was stretchered off in the 33rd minute and later taken to hospital with a suspected fractured left leg.

Doncaster did not let the incident get them down and would have won by an even bigger margin but for the performance of Rayner.

Martin Carruthers twice went close for Lincoln early in the second half, but for the rest of the game was kept well under control by the Rovers defence. Lincoln almost sneaked a stoppage time equaliser when a lob from Francis Green beat keeper Stuart Jones but came back off the post.

QPR 4 Coventry 1

A HAT-TRICK from Jamie Cureton fired QPR to a fifth straight Championship win last night.

The former Reading striker opened the scoring at Loftus Road when he raced on to Marc Bircham's pass on 32 minutes and beat keeper Luke Steele with a low drive.

And Cureton doubled Rangers' advantage nine minutes later with a neat volley from a tight angle after City defender Matthew Mills failed to clear.

Coventry were thrown a lifeline in the second hal when Graham Barrett pulled one back but Cureton killed off their hopes of a comeback 16 minutes from time.

A neat pass from Paul Furlong released Cureton and he shot past Steele.

Furlong then got his name on the scoresheet with a late header to seal the three points.

55' Marchena (Valencia) is dismissed. The scrappy start to the second-half culminates in a second caution for Carlos Marchena who is given his marching orders. Valencia's task to hold onto their lead has just become much harder.

60' Klose (Bremen) scores! Finally the home side make the breakthrough. A cross-shot from Klasnic finds Klose unmarked and onside at the back post to fire home just inside Cañizares' left upright.

74' Stalteri (Bremen) is shown a yellow card. The Canadian falls to the floor in the penalty area under a challenge from Baraja and is booked for diving.
