OH YEAH!!! Lazio 3 Roma 1 (FINALLY, it's been too long...)

capt.gb10601062039.italy_soccer_gb106.jpg

Sounded like a wild match as usual, full of tension, hard tackles, exploding flares, tussles, 10 cards, whining Cassano and Totti, incredible atmosphere... and, oh yeah, some good soccer... let's just watch...

Yeah ,it was a great passionate match, rough, Lazio played above itself.

Too bad about the idiots in the stands throwing all the stuff, including huge firecrackers and flares. I was sure they were going to stop the match for the protection of the players early in the second half. Them Romans is cuckoo! I think they should close the Olympic stadium in Rome to fans for a whole month, for both teams. Guess they had big problems (between fans) in Parma when Juve visited too.

Di Canio another wildman on a tear performance. Best commentator's line (when Di Canio was trying to restrain one of the Filipini twins from retaliating): "When Di Canio acts as a voice of reason, you know the match has gone pear-shaped."

Fiorentina crush Parma to reach Italian Cup last eight

ROME, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Fiorentina reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup on Wednesday when they brushed aside Parma 3-0 in the second leg of their third round tie for a 5-0 aggregate win.

The six-times former winners took the lead in the 54th minute when striker Enrico Fantini dragged down a long ball before firing past goalkeeper Gianluca Berti.

Parma failed to react and midway through the half Enzo Maresca doubled the visitors' advantage with a perfectly-flighted lob that left Berti flat-footed.

Defender Christian Maggio knocked in a third from close range 10 minutes from time after a shot by striker Javier Portillo deflected into his path.

Later on Wednesday, Inter take a 3-1 lead into their second leg with Bologna, while AC Milan start 2-1 up against Palermo.

(1st Leg was Nov 19, delay of completion obviously an Italian fetish)

I watched the second half of Sampdoria vs. Torino on the Web. At 1-1 Torino needed two goals, and got one with 5 minutes left. I'm sure I wasn't the only one with visions of last Sunday! But it ended with no more goals, Sampdoria advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

This was Inzaghino's debut for Samp. Came close a couple of times, went down in search of a penalty at least once, 4 offsides in the second half alone. Yup, that's Inzaghino. ;)

On Samp's goal, Francesco Flachi headed the ball on for Kutuzov to score, but just after touching the ball Flachi clashed heads with a Torino player and was knocked out cold, falling literally on his face. The medical staff rushed on and smacked him a few times, but he wasn't responding. I hate seeing this stuff. When he finally came to, he stood up and walked off the field, then got mad as people were trying to help him to the dressing room. I don't think he was all there.

Zola knocks holders Lazio out of Italian Cup

ROME, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Gianfranco Zola scored in extra time to knock holders Lazio out of the Italian Cup on Thursday and put Cagliari into the quarter-finals on the away goals rule.

Lazio won the second leg 3-2 but after losing 2-1 away in the first leg they tumbled out in the third round.

The troubled Rome side looked to be cruising into the last eight with goals either side of halftime from midfielder Antonio Filippini and striker Tommaso Rocchi.

Cagliari looked short on ideas in attack but with nine minutes remaining David Suazo nodded the ball into the path of fellow striker Daniele Conti, who hooked past Lazio keeper Matteo Sereni to take the game into extra time.

In the 102nd minute Lazio's defence allowed former Chelsea striker Zola space to lash into the roof of the net and despite a late strike by Rocchi to make the aggregate score 4-4, Cagliari progressed thanks to their two goals at the Olympic Stadium.

They next face Sampdoria, who eliminated the only remaining non-Serie A side Torino earlier in the week.

In another thrilling third round second leg match on Thursday, Udinese also progressed on the away goals rule after drawing 8-8 with Lecce on aggregate.

Having won the first leg in Lecce 5-4, Udinese extended their advantage with an early goal by striker David Di Michele.

Lecce then stormed back to lead 4-1 with a brace from striker Mirko Vucinic and goals by Sasa Bjelanovic and Cedric Konan.

In the 88th minute striker Vincenzo Iaquinta pulled one back and Antonio Di Natale grabbed the crucial third for Udinese two minutes into added time.

Udinese and Lazio were joined in the last eight by AS Roma, who overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit by thrashing Siena 5-1 to win 6-3 on aggregate.

Early strikes by defender Traianos Dellas and captain Francesco Totti and a Massimo Maccarone penalty for Siena left the contest evenly-balanced at halftime, but goals by Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella in the first four minutes after the restart put the result beyond doubt.

Roma's 20-year-old striker Daniele Corvia added a fifth just after the hour and the late dismissal of defender Bruno Cirillo completed Siena's woes.

In a later match Serie A leaders Juventus try to overturn a 2-0 deficit at home to Atalanta.

Who says Italian soccer is boring!?! In particular, the Coppa Italia. There were some very interesting matches this week.

While I'm disappointed that Lazio were eliminated, especially given the manner in which it happened (ie. giving up a goal in the last 5 minutes to force ET), they still got the win to make it three in a row overall, a good sign (which reminds me, I never got around to saying that it was sweet to defeat Fiorentina, the newest Italian club I love to hate, only three days after winning the derby!).

The article posted above did not mention how the Siena vs. Roma match was delayed for an hour, and nearly suspended, because Roma fans lit so many flares that the smoke enveloped the stadium and made it impossible to play. Totti went over to plead to the fans to stop, but they "insulted" and threw stuff at him, leading him to once again threaten to leave Roma (haha, Totti). There must be something about Siena's stadium, because I remember when the Siena vs. Lazio Coppa match was shown on FSWC a couple of years ago, there was a long delay when a thick fog hung over the field.

And of course, the last-placed club knocking out the first-placed club, with a hat-trick by 20-year-old Andrea Lazzari.

Most amazing, though, is the continuing Udinese-Lecce saga. I posted about their first two matches in November, but here's a summary of all three:

Serie A - November 7
Lecce 3 Udinese 4
35' L Bojinov
44' U Jankulovski
57' L Bojinov
72' U Di Natale
78' U Iaquinta
89' L Vucinic
92' U Jankulovski (PK)

Coppa Italia - November 20
Lecce 4 Udinese 5
11' L Ledesma (PK)
29' L Dalla Bona
31' L Bojinov
34' U Felipe
45' U Di Michele
57' U Di Natale
67' L Bojinov
78' U Di Michele
88' U Di Natale
[also Lecce PK stopped by striker Di Michele in injury time]

Coppa Italia - January 13
Udinese 3 Lecce 4
07' U Di Michele
39' L Vucinic
46' L Bjelanovic
82' L Konan
84' L Vucinic
88' U Iaquinta
92' U Di Michele[/code]

That's just incredible. An aggregate of Udinese 12 Lecce 11 over the three matches, with 9 goals coming in the last 12 minutes, 5 of those in the last 2 minutes or injury time.

Is it just me or has the Coppa featured more first-string players than usual? At least in the second leg of this round.

Regarding television coverage, I doubt we'll see any Coppa matches on Telelatino because they are carried by RAI. However, as I alluded to above, many Coppa matches are Webcast (video) by RAISport Satellite:

http://www.fastweb.it/streaming/raisport.asx

They also show Serie C1, C2 and D, Primavera, Calcio a 5 (futsal) and youth national team matches, plus other sports (Italian hockey, basketball, skiing, etc.). If anyone's interesting I'll try to post specific matches they have scheduled.

Well, to the next round of Serie A, highlighted by a very interesting Milan vs. Udinese match on Sunday morning. On Telelatino, at the usual times:

Saturday

Reggina vs. Inter

Sunday

Milan vs. Udinese

Chievo vs. Roma

Cagliari vs. Juventus

For tose who missed out on what hapeened these last couple of days, in the Italian Serie A.

Inter reportedly missed out on signing Lazio’s Cesar after they failed to increase their bid by £700,000. The Nerazzurri did renew transfer talks with the capital club last month but no agreement could be reached.

Whispers in the peninsula today claim that Inter offered £1.8m and the remainder of Goran Pandev’s contract for the Brazilian.

But the Biancocelesti wanted to keep Pandev, who is currently on loan from the San Siro, and £2.5m.

Meanwhile, it is believed that Fiorentina ruined Juventus’ chances of signing Lecce youngster Cristian Ledesma.

The Bianconeri had apparently offered the Via Del Mare outfit the services of Stephen Appiah and £3.2m.

But the Giallorossi pulled out after they decided to sell Valeri Bojinov for £10m to the Viola instead. The Argentine midfielder, 22, could now complete the proposed move to the Stadio Delle Alpi in the summer.

Meanwhile, stories circulating on Tuesday suggest that Inter will complete the £5m capture of Benfica defender Luisao in June.

Well, well, well... The championship race was being written off a week ago with Juve 8 points ahead, but now they've lost two in a row and Milan will be back within 2 points after they beat Lazio on Sunday.

Yes, I'm saying it, Milan will beat Lazio. Lazio will probably play well, possibly coming close to a draw, but will inevitably lose. That's just the way it is.

I've also got next week's winning lottery numbers if anyone wants them.

(I was even going to post that the winning goal would come really late or in injury time (honest!), but decided not to get too specific as it was already an exception for me to make any kind of match predicton. But I really felt it, even as injury time was winding down.)

Lazio haven't been the same since the Di Canio fascist salute incident. I think this might have divided the team.

I don't know, it's not as if things were any better before that.

Anyway, today was supposed to be a loss all along (not that it doesn't hurt, but I'm trying to make it hurt less). The important matches are the ones against the neighbouring teams... Speaking of which, to go along with last Wednesday against Brescia, coming up are Atalanta, Chievo, Parma and Messina — these are huge! And then after Inter are Siena and Livorno — many opportunities!

Is there really only one relagation/promotion spot from Serie A/B or should I look to other tables beside planetfootball. Their table shows only one relagation spot currentlly occupied bt Atalanta. With Genoa atop of Serie B by 5 points over Torino and Empoli.

Not being a huge follower of Italian game one relagation/promotion spot seems strange. Too much time spent following Britsh Isles or French but mostly British (not only English) footie I guess.[B)]

Yeah, well maybe you got Serie A mixed up with Scotland, where they usually</u> have one relegated. Easy to get mixed up, both leagues have a lot of shennanigans. Almost like foreign countries when seen from Moncton!:)
