Warren in the UK
Hey everyone. I understand everyone is annoyed, but I for one do not think winning three games in a row is a daunting task. Just think if Canada wins just the next game, the situation would alter easily and it will not look so difficult. I believe the first three games Canada had were very disorganised as a result of suspensions or injuries. No Stalteri, Devos playing only one game, no Mckenna, no Bircham, no Brennan. (On a side note: I can understand not choosing Brennan because he has had no playing time with his club, by how do you justify the choice of picking an inexperienced 17 year old who is not attached to any club.) We have yet to see the best of Canada. Bircham and Mckenna are becoming healthy and there are no expected suspensions (as far as I know). Lets just hope that we can get a full healthy squad out there. I am still looking foward to these games because and I will be behind them 100%, Germany 2006 is not out of our hands so tell the fat lady she is not on yet. It football anything is possible. Go Canada we are all behind you.
mattbin
I'm not exactly feeling optimistic these days, but I do agree with Warren. One advantage we have in this group is that there are no guaranteed points for anyone; Guatemala was expected to go something like, say, 0-3-3, and now they're topping the group. They could esily lose their last three matches, too. It's a long, long way to the top of the table, and I'm not confident. I'm not ready to throw in the towel, though, either. Reza
Being a soccer fan around here means that you have to be an eternal optimist, so I also think that we have a shot, although I am not counting on it. This is a tough group and all the teams are very close. One or two mistakes can turn this group around for any team.
Desigol
Canada can win those 3 games. They haven't been playing THAT badly. Move Stalteri into Right-Sided Midfield and Hutchinson into Midfield.
fza
Canada has to win at least 2 games and tie the last one against a qualified Guatemala. PERIOD!

scole
I'm choosing this topic to weigh in on for my first posting to the forum because the title really captures my current mood. I'm with Warren and a number of other people (Elias et al) who still have hope. It may be crazy, naive etc ... a tragic end may soon be upon us, but why not hope? Yes the game against Guatemala was awful (I watched from the stands with my 5yr old son, wondering if this defeat would form the basis of his early football memories ... a form of child abuse perhaps?). But I was ecstatic when DeVos scored that goal against Honduras. We could have and should have won that game. I was expecting much worse from the game in Costa Rica -- yeah sure we made some mistakes, but we weren't gutted. We had chances and a win there wouldn't have been impossible. So the odds may still be against us (when weren't they?), but why not? (BTW, this is a rhetorical question, already been answered in detail in other posts.) I've been listening in here for the last 9 months or so (lurking sounds a little more lurid, but call it what you will). Silent until now mostly because I didn't feel I had much to add to the conversation and have limited time to sit down during the day to post. Especially since the WCQ games, I've begun to realize how wrapped up I've become in the MNT and the extent to which this board (even just through reading the posts) has become a thereapeutic outlet for my optimistic (and often frustrated) feelings about Canadian soccer. There's definitely room for criticism and suggestions for improvement, but what keeps me interested in our men's team (and what keeps me coming back to this forum almost every day now), is an underlying sense of optimism. The team (and the game in general in Canada) may not be where we'd like it to be, but it can and will improve as long as there is a desire for it to do so. I'd love to see a graphic of a pig tailed opera singer in a viking helmet with her mouth taped shut. C'mon Reds! C'mon V'ees![]

sstackho
Great first post, scole! Coming to this forum is certainly therapy. The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. There is no known cure for optimism. Keep on posting.
