“The Canada we`ll see”

A simple team, with defensive skills and physical strength

Tuesday September 7th 2004

The Canadian team we`ll see tomorrow against Costa Rica is one very loyal to the style of play of other Canadian sides from past World Cup Qualifiers.

Practical soccer, very vertical and physical (without violence) style of play, defensive minded and with a lack of spark to create offensive plays is what`s on the North American team`s main menu.

The Canadians arrived yesterday to play the last game of the first round of the Concacaf semifinal B of WCQ.

Canada practiced under non-stop rain during the evening at the “Estadio Saprissa” that will host the game tomorrow at 8 pm.

Today they will practice again in the evening at the same place but it won`t be open for the press.

Canada and Costa Rica will be forced to win tomorrow, after only earning 1 and 0 points respectively after 2 games.

Frank Yallop`s side tries to be more offensive than other Canadian national teams from the past but it`s easier said than done.

They have many players for that offensive intention but only scoring once in the last 2 games at home isn´t the best way to live up to that reputation.

Although, they are still dangerous in the air, hence the importance the “Maple Leaf” gives to practice set pieces always looking for the far post to score. That`s the way they opened the scoring against Honduras. Keeping in mind that the Hondurans are very strong in the air, which is why this information shouldn`t be ignored.

De Vos, Dwayne de Rosario, Ian Hume, Tomasz Radzinski, Paul Staltieri and Paul Peschisolido are all references of a team seeking it`s second WC birth since 1986.

The pillars of the team are players that play abroad, mostly in Europe and in the United States, which means that they all have international experience.

The tradition continues, being strong defensively and always looking for the opponents goal the easiest way possible. They`re not fast but not slow either (fza: so what the hell are they??..hahaha).

Canada`s flaws? Lack of creativity on the offensive side and being counter attacked complicates them a lot. This was evident when Guatemalan forward David Suazo ran at the Canadian defensive complicating them which lead to the first goal.

That writer says this team is strong defensively, though that seems to be the biggest concern. They also don't seem to be aware De Vos is missing and that this will cause a problem, was that article printed recently?

That is my concern too! remember on saturday we played poor defence! in the 2nd we did better but we will have to be careful....very though to play in costa rica!.......how ever am sure at the end we will end up with the 3 pts!:D

fza, thanks for this. Nice to see the analysis. Pretty damned accurate, eh? Let's hope we notch up our creativity and take them by surprise a little.
