Result of the Sunday September 5th, 2004 CPSL Semi-Final game between Windsor Border Stars and Capital City Ambassadors played at Cove Road Stadium in London at 5:18pm.

29 min...Ambassadors Souleymane Gagou runs to through ball in W box and defender clips him. Referee Michael Reikhan points to penalty spot.

30 min...Ambassadors Sabrahima Traore GOAL...Traore (their goalie) rolls penalty kick into left corner of net with goalie Dan Placek frozen to his spot.

35 min...Border Stars Tati Errecalde GOAL...Errecalde from freekick that is tapped to him blasts 19 yarder into low left side of net.

40 min...Ambassadors Ladislas Bushiri and Borderstars player #17 (Chris King?) are both injured sliding to keep a ball in play on Amb end line. Bushiri is badly injured and needs treatment off field. For some reason the Amb are not allowed to bring in a substitute. The Windsor player is signalled back into the game from the sideline before play resumes for the resulting cornerkick.

42 min...Border Stars Steve Wonsch GOAL...BS Aaron Byrd cornerkick from right, Wonsch nods in 4 yard header on short side that diving goalie gets hands to but ball dribbles over line.

82 min...Border Stars Jeremy Harkins GOAL...Harkins is given through ball on left and races into box and blasts 10 yarder over sprawling, waving goalie to center of net.

85 min...Border Stars Tati Errecalde GOAL...Errecalde given ball from right and has shot from left and bends ball into right corner of net from 15 yards.

89 min...Border Stars Mike Vonella GOAL...Border Stars Tati Errecalde cornerkick from right is crossed into box that sprawling goalie blocks. Vonella blasts 7 yarder that pinballs into net.

Final Score:.....Windsor Border Stars.....5......Capital City Ambassadors......1.......

Attendance was about 100 persons on this humid afternoon with a bright sun in the northwest.

An official from the Ambassadors vowed never to return to the Open Cup because of the CPSLcentricity of the calls especially the last three minutes of the first half which was the turning point of the game. An official from London City appoligized to him for the choppy field. Apparently the new president of the German-Canadian club is not a big soccer fan and wanted to cut expenses so Cove Road has no full time groundskeeper this year. A heavy rainfall would have turned the goalmouths into the puddly mess that cancelled last Sunday's league game in Brampton.

Result of the Sunday September 5th, 2004 CPSL Semi-Final game between Ottawa St Anthony Italia and Metro Lions played at Cove Road Stadium in London at 8:38pm.

40 min...StA Allan Popazzi GOAL...Popazzi in middle takes low blast from 20 yards that's into right corner of net with goalie Amanddp Saini frozen in place in center of net. It was a screen shot but the goalie didn't move!

69 min...StA Huffman Tabe GOAL...Tabe in middle has ball and has shot past goalie and two defenders that miss clearing ball.

72 min...Lions Kareem Reynolds GOAL...Lions cornerkick from right, Reynolds heads ball under bar from left side of net over defender with goalie Angus Wong guarding right side of net. (the goalscorer was announced as Marc Jankovic but the referee's assistant and 4th official both through it was Reynolds).

86 min...StA Abraham Osman GOAL...StA cornerkick from right has Osman push ball in from 5 yards on left on short kick.

Final Score:......Ottawa St Anthony Italia......3........Metro Lions......1....

Attendance was about 75 on this humid evening and that included about 20 players and officials from the Capital City Ambassadors cheering for the other Ottawa team.

St Anthony goalkeeper Angus Wong had to be sharp on making a few key saves. Lions troubles were they couldn't use their regular goalie Gregory Drakes because he was red carded late in Friday's wildcard game against London City. The goalie Amandeep Saini looked weak and shakey. That was really St Anthony's first good chance on goal when they scored. Saini was lucky not to be red carded when at the beginning of the second half he drifted just outside the box to catch a high 30 yard pop up by Allan Popazzi. Referee Mike Lambert only called a freekick. The referee had a good game in a very rough hard tackling ninety minutes.

The St Anthony team had many former CPSL club Ottawa Wizards players on their roster. Abraham Osman, Russel Shaw, Urbain Some, Allan Popazzi were alumni. Ambassadors goalie Sabrahima Traore was also a Wizards starter.

Nice to see that Osman and Shaw would say 'hello' to me even though they aren't in the CPSL anymore so they must follow this Voyageurs board.

I asked CPSL president Vince Ursini if with two Ottawa teams making it to the semi-final whether they had any interest in joining the league but he rubbed his fingers in the 'money' gesture and saying that's what's keeping those teams away. These two teams and the in-limbo Montreal Dynamites and a few other Montreal teams could compose their own division.

Of course they let the host team in to drum up local attendence. The problem is that it absolutely kills the sporting integrity of the competition when that club has already been eliminated then gets chosen as host and let back in. Furthermore, adding them as a wildcard team in an extra round is ridiculous since it forces one team to play an extra game. If Metro Lions lost because their keeper was redcarded against London that shows just how unfair the set up is.

If the host is to be in the finals then they should announced as host at the start of the competition, shouldn't play in the preliminary rounds, and should (along with three other qaulifiers) just be dropped in at the semi's on the Finals Weekend. I'll grant that the winner should have first call on being host for the next year since under this scheme hosting is an even more valuable than the current one since you would start one game closer to the final.

At least London's out.

Mike.

Result of the Monday September 6, 2004 CPSL game between Ottawa St Anthony Italia and Windsor Border Stars in the Canada Open Cup Final played at Cove Road Stadium in London at 3:08pm.

5 min...WBS Aaron Byrd runs on left and is knocked over in the OSAI box. Referee Alex William signals for a Penalty kick.

6 min...WBS Aaron Byrd Penalty kick is rolled wide left with goalie Angus Wong diving left.

11 min...OSAI Egar Soigo GOAL...OSAI Allan Popazzi rush on right and cross into box over goalie and OSAI Abraham Osman but Soigo trailing play rushes in and all alone heads 7 yarder into middle of open net with goalie Dan Placek still guarding right side.

25 min...WBS Tati Errecalde GOAL...WBS Justin Marshall 30 yard freekick from right is well left and caught in the wind and Errecalde heads ball in from tough angle on left from 10 yards that bounces to right corner of net.

Score at end of regulation time 1-1. Two 15 minute Golden Goal overtime periods didn't break the deadlock.

Penalty kicks:

1. OSAI Johnny Schieda shot is low to center right and goalie Anthony Santili dives on it. Santili had come in as a substitute with three minutes to go in the second overtime.

1. WBS Tati Errecalde GOAL...Errecalde blasts to left side high as goalie Angus Wong flies right.

2. OSAI Marc Labrom GOAL...Labrom's shot is low to left as goalie dives right.

2. WBS Aaron Byrd GOAL...Byrd's shot is to left as goalie dives right. Partly makes up for missing the 6 minute penalty kick.

3. OSAI Abraham Osman GOAL...Osman's shot to left as goalie dives right.

3. WBS John Roma GOAL...Roma flubs shot to left and goalie flies over it.

4. OSAI Hoffman Tabe GOAL... Tabe's shot to left and goalie gets hand to it as he was waving and pointing to his right to dare Tabe to shoot there. Shot is too hard for goalie to stop.

4. WBS Filip Rocca GOAL...Rocca's shot is blasted to top right corner beyond goalie.

5. OSAI Richard Furano shot to right that diving goalie blocks.

Windsor Border Stars win 4-2 in the shootout after a 1-1 double overtime tie.

Attendance was about 120 on this hot humid day with a wind from the north and a bright sun from the west. Only about 100 were there at the start but maybe some more came out of the club restaurant to see the excitement as the game wore on.

Both teams could have won the game at various points with the Ottawa team ringing more posts and crossbars than the Border Stars. Referee Alex William called a good game with all the rough play involved. I've criticized his games over the years for bringing games to a halt when quick freekicks are called back for being two yards too far upfield or as a fourth official for being too slow to allow substitutes, but this game the St Lucian FIFA official called it pretty good and deserved this tough assignment.

Windsor Border Stars were presented with the Canada Open Cup trophy by CPSL president Vince Ursini. Team owner/general manager/player Jeff Hodgson accepted the trophy. I told Vince later he should have had one of those oversized cardboard cheques written out for $10,000 like the lottery winners as part of the presentation. They look good in the publicity photos. Only me and another photographer were taking pictures. The game was broadcast on a tape delay basis to Rogers London based customers supposedly starting at either 6 or 7pm. Justin from "The CPSL This Week" says the highlights from this weekend will be edited in time for this Saturday's show shown at 11:35am Eastern time on Vision TV. The young guy as the colour man on the Rogers broadcast knew that the Ottawa team wasn’t strictly inexperienced amateurs. How did he have so much inside information? Aha. It turned out to be Ryan Gauss (son of London City owner Harry Gauss) who's known the workings of the league since it got started.

The result works out pretty good for the league with a CPSL coming out of top. The result should bring other amateur teams up to the plate with a feeling that they could win this competition.

Hey RR, I was going to ask you a few weeks back about this team, as I remember hearing that they were going to play a few games in Detroit. Did this happen in the end? What is the word on the club and its management, pitch, fans, etc? Would appreciate a run-down if you could.

Have you had anyone in Windsor helping with game reports for you?

This weekend was only the second and third time I'd seen the Border Stars. With the schedule I made for myself at the beginning of the year, I may see them four more times in the regular season.

The CPSL website revealed they've already played (a) game(s) on the Detroit side of the river. I'm not sure what their attendance is like. It would be nice if someone who's seen them play a home game could mention what the atmosphere is like. The team I know not much about!

The club draws roughly 1500-2000 fans per game when playing in Windsor and about 1000 when playing in Auburn Hills (suburb of Detroit). Although old, Windsor Stadium is a well-kept, smooth playing surface while the U.S. venue is at Notre Dame Prep School. They play on field turf there. Both stadiums are usually filled to capacity so the atmoshpere is great. Their final home game is this Saturday in Auburn Hills.
