Bertuzzi44
Men's World Cup Team Saturday, September 04, 2004 Canada Draws Honduras 1-1 Edmonton, AB – Canada's Men's World Cup Team drew Honduras 1-1 in front of 9,654 spectators at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, September 4, 2004. After a scoreless first half and numerous failed opportunities by both teams, Canada came out strong in the first minute of the second half on a Tomasz Radzinski cross that Iain Hume’s subsequent header bounced off the ground and into the hands of the Honduran goalkeeper Noel Vallardares. In the 58th minute, Dwayne de Rosario worked up the left side and past his defender for a cross which slid past Hume and towards Jaime Peters who then took possession. Peters turned away from his defenders and left the ball for Daniel Imhof to take a shot that sailed over the cross bar. Canada took the lead in the 82nd minute after Jason deVos headed the ball into the far side of the net on a Hume free kick. Honduras tied the game in the 88th minute after David Suazo went down in the Canadian penalty area and the following penalty kick taken by Amado Gulevara’s found a way past Canadian goalkeeper Pat Onstad. Canada looked to regain the lead moments later when Olivier Occean beat Vallardares. Occean’s goal was immediately called back by the Mexican referee on a foul. “I haven’t seen the replay, it’s hard to judge what happened,” said Head Coach Frank Yallop when questioned about the final minutes of the game. “We need to win the next three of four,” continued Yallop. “We can still do it.” Canada’s next match in the semi-final round of World Cup Qualifying will take place against Costa Rica on September 8th in San Jose, Costa Rica.
