Word from Canadian practice reaches Honduras

Went to today's (Thursday's) open practice. Didn't know about the practice game yesterday with EdmFC, if it in fact happened. They must have had a tough practice yesterday, as today they arrived over half an hour late and left after a 1 hour 10 minute light workout. Nothing of a technical nature, so no insights on formation or starters. Hardly saw the pink ribbons on their upper arms, probably had the team manager find some less striking pink.

Imhoff did not practice at all, he is injured and probably won't play. Pesch was running like everyone else, but still obviously in some discomfort. De Rosario was practicing, but noticeable discomfort with the right knee. Jamie Peters was practicing, probably is the insurance in case someone on the 18 man roster not available. The others were goodnaturedly making him the butt of their jokes.

Don't know if it means anything, but Stalieri broke off with the strikers and attacking midfielders for shot, and cross practice. Simpson and Peters were practicing passes and dribbles elsewhere with

the back guys (De Vos, Watson, Hutchinson, Jasic and Serioux). They sure need Stalieri to spark up for attack, but don't know how they would fit him into the midfield.

It was only a practice, but all the Western Canadian coaches at Victoria for the coaches symposium were aghast at how hard it was for the shoooters to hit the net.

In terms of the GK's I'm a bit biased towards getting Lars into the match, but a friend of moine from Jamaica with competitive playing and coaching background and not too familiar with gkng situation said that he foiund Lars more energetic, flexible and sharp. Hard to tell in practice though.

All in all a rather lethargic bunch, the Honduran press were making jokes about how inanimated the practice was. Needed Bircham there to get everyone humming. Since he played 17 ' with QPR on the weekend, maybe they'll fly him in for insurance in CR.

Why on earth be concerned about giving up one goal in a fairly laid back scrimmage ??? First off where no one is risking injury and most of our top players from Europe are still battling jet lag after playing in Europe Saturday and a couple of them on Monday , some of these guys have only been in the country 48 hours. This was a chance for some our guys to get a good run under their belts and get reacquainted playing with each other (esp. Hume , Radz, and Devos). If the score ended up 0-0 or 1-1 , maybe it would sound off an alarm bell or two, but I don't think anyones gonna be losing any sleep over that Edmonton goal.

Have you been reading all the postings trashing Onstad? There is a legitimate concern about his GK abilities coupled with Yallop's fondness with him. Hopefully we will score more than we let in. But I too expect on an easy game as this to come out with a clean sheet.

Thanks for taking the practice update torch- it's nice to get the valuable insight from fellow Voyageurs. One question, though- isn't Peters already on the 18 man roster? Why wouldn't he be expected to be a useful sub as he was against Guatemala? The only thing I can think of if this is true is that they are gifting him the rest so as not to screw up his trial status in England. Japan's Inamoto was just about to properly tansfer to Fulham before tearing his knee and being sent back to the J-League indefinitely. The same situation would obviously really suck for Peters.

Mr. Jorge (loose lips) Rodriguez is the chief soccer advisor/confidant to Mario Charpentier, Vice President of the Alberta Soccer Association and President of the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association. The same brain trust that helped devise the brilliant Edmonton Aviators business plan.

Enough said!!!!!
