seether
It might just be me, but between millionaires fighting over a salary cap and it being August, I have a hard time caring about hockey.

beachesl
Let's see. 8 teams. 4 Quarterfinals. Everyone gets a playoff spot. Why bother having round-robin group matches? It's just a longer exhibition period. However, it might be the last at-all-meaningful international hockey, for another 4 years, as there might not be NHL players in the Turin Olympics in 2006 (as it might not be okayed in the NHL/NHLPA collective agreement by the deadline of Jan 2005). By the way, did anybody see the Ducks Unlimited commercial with Geordie Howe during Saturday morning's Soccercentral? Man, there was a hockey player. Wish we had somebody with lightning quick elbows like he had in the back four at Commonwealth this Saturday night.

You mean last chance to see millionaires playing hockey for a long time. There will still be plenty of hockey being played and more exciting than clutch and grab NHL. matthew
I feel guilty not being more excited about this, but with eight years between tourneys and the Olympics clearly the more significant tourney this thing has lost its thunder. Were we not in the middle of World Cup qualifying and if I weren't going to be on vacation for the first week of the tourney it might be more enticing. I actually spent 10-12 hours in a hockey rink this weekend and I'm in a good hockey mood, but still not overly excited about Monday's game. Though I'm actually looking forward to seeing the games from Europe more than I am about seeing the Canada pool games. Not that I'll see them anyway. I'll be on the road for the US game, I'll be in Commonwealth when we play the Russians . . . I really don't think this is going to capture people's imaginations. cheers, matthew

I cannot help but think of it as a series of exhibition games given that it doesn't hit radar on in any other country other than canada.

argh1
quote:Originally posted by Jarrek Hockey World Cup ? They can't be serious!!! Well I notice by the hi-lites that NHL creases are being used . So is this an IIHF tourney or a NHL/NHLPA tourney. If this is an IIHF tourney , can you have an annual championship and a world cup ?

Dante79
Just thinking that most of Canadians are gonna watch the Canada hockey team and not the game vs Honduras on saturday!
Daniel
Don't try to convince us hockey sucks. I'll be watching Honduras for shizzle, but think about it for a second. In Canada, a World Cup of hockey game against the historical enemy as opposed to a World Cup QUALIFIER in soccer against... who? This IS Canada. I'll be attending v Slovakia and I love hockey. But I'd rather be at Canada-Slovakia in Germany 2006 .
DarnCherry
Just to be clear here, I like hockey. I just don't like the style that the NHL now plays. Give me a slower game with Guy Lafleur and that era over the quicker game where nobody has time to think and nobody scores. I'd still play hockey if it weren't so damn expensive to play (no frozen ponds here).
