Robert Giacomi Signs for Glasgow Rangers

August 24, 2004

Robert Giacomi, the Markham Lightning Boys Under 18 goalkeeper, has signed a two year professional contract with Glasgow Rangers of the Scottish Premier League. Robert will begin his professional career with the under 19 Rangers team and has already played in a few of their under 19 league games. Robert, who has been with Markham for over five years has also represented Canada in the under 17 national team and looks to have a successful professional career ahead of him. We all wish Robert the best of luck and will keep a close watch on his progress.

I think soccerbeast is making a reference to the sectarian troubles experienced in Glasgow. Rangers support is predominantly protestant or Anglican whereas Celtic supporters are Catholic and have ties to Catholic Northern Ireland. Soccerbeast is probably assuming Giacomi is Italian and thus Catholic, which could cause the Rangers fans to give him a bit of grief. I'm no expert on Glaswegian society but I think those problems are toned down now. Amoroso, another Italian and probable Catholic recently played at Rangers and I heard no news of him being abused by the fans.

Let's all ignore soccerbreast and get back to the issue at hand - congratulations to Giacomi and let's wish him the best of luck. He played for Canada at the same U17 qualifiers that Peters did and I'm wondering if he'll still be eligible for the U20 2007 team which has already qualified for the World Cup.

And great to see another Markham boy (and keeper) do well!

Yes, but I've never heard of a Protestant being referred to as a "Hun." What is the origin in this regard? Or, am I right in thinking that SoccerBeast is once again poorly informed?

I think we all know the answer.

On a POSITIVE NOTE: Congratulations to Giacomi and his family. This is great news. I saw Robert play in Victoria with the U17s and was very impressed. Good on you, laddie.

Robert was born in 1986, I don't think he'll be eligible for 2007.

I don't know his religion and don't care, and no those problems in Glasgow havn't gone away they are still there. Celtic accept players

& managers of any different religons, Rangers stick to the basic

protestant roots, with a couple of exceptions. If this lad does great

for Canada then great, but while he's with the enemy, i can't support

him.

Well good news for Mr. Giacomi. Best wishs for his upcoming Scotland adventures. I'm sure the experience will do him wonders no matter where his career paths lead him.

Allways wondered about the Huns slang for Ranger supporters. It's there. Allways has been. And no, it's not ment in fond terms. Years and years ago asked one of my Celtic mentors about it and he just blabbered on some nonscense about the half-bred English monarchy and their Ibrox slaves. Dought he had any clue what he was talking about and that was years before I realised he was a complete drunk. Seen him sober one time. Not pretty.

Very simple. He's not a Canadian supporter.

What just because i won't support a player who plays for a certain

team, i don't think so. In this case it's club before country,

im just like a certain Canadian team player, and we all know who.

I for one will be supporting this wee guy, irrespective of his religion. Contrary to popular belief Rangers have many catholics playin in the starting eleven.

By the Way, if Celtic are not a sectarian club then why did they not make their greatest and most successful manager ever, Jock Stein, a member of the board upon retiring from his long-standing Celtic managerial career? It was because he was a Protestant. Everyone where i'm from knows that Celtic discriminated against Protestants as did Rangers with Catholics back in the day.
