Congratulations to the Impact!

They should be going to the CONCACAF Cup to represent Canada, if there was any justice.

Yes by all means way to go IMPACT our Division 1 CHAMPIONS

But then MLS teams would have to play lowly Canadian teams in a playdown. The US Open Cup winner play the V-Cup winner how degrading when Mexican teams are waiting and investing in the MLS [:0]

Besides even if we were invited we'd have to travel to Guyana or something or pay for their travel to Montreal.

Which brings me to..... have you ever wondered why.... Guyana , French Guyana & Surinam are in CONCACAF instead of CONMEBOL ?

I put forward that since the N in CONCACAF doesn't really include North America outside of THE U.S.of A. and since we have tons of islands at least two of which are provinces ( don't tell them 'bout Labrador ) that we seperate from CONCACAF and join OFC [}:)]

HAHAHA re-name THE CONFEDERATION . Confederation of U.S,Central American & Carribean Association Football COUCACAF [:o)]

EDIT : All joking aside here's the 2004 rules and regulations for CHAMPIONS CUP in pdf Champions Cup Reguations

More Voyageurs Cup mentions in the media!!!

From CP, posted all over the place (I found it on Canoe, canada.com, Yahoo! Canada, The Toronto Star, Sportsnet):

MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Impact clinched the A-League Eastern Conference title Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Edmonton FC.

"It's great to finish first, it was one of our goals," said Eduardo Sebrango, who had one goal and one assist for Montreal. "And it was good to be able to do it in front of our fans, who've been supporting us all year." A crowd of 10,122 made the trip to Claude Robillard Sports Complex to see the game, the second largest attendance in club history. The record of 11,019 fans was set last August 6.

Sebrango set up Ze Roberto's goal in the 21st minute, then found the back of the net himself in the 22nd minute.

The Impact, extended its undefeated and shutout streaks to eight games (7-0-1). Backup goalkeeper Andrew Olivieri collected his third shutout in as many starts this season.

With the victory, the Impact won their third-straight Voyageurs Cup, awarded to the top Canadian team in the A-League.

From The Gazette in Montreal (I imagine this one also appeared in print):

Impact clinches East title

Impact 2, Aviators 0; Boasts top record in A-League at 17-4-5

JOHN MEAGHER

The Gazette

August 26, 2004

The Impact made easy work of the Edmonton Aviators last night to clinch the A-League's Eastern Conference regular-season soccer title for a second straight year.

The Impact posted a 2-0 win over the visitors at Claude Robillard Stadium to improve its sparkling record to 17-4-5, tops in the 16-team A-League. At the opposite end of the standings is Edmonton, which fell to 4-17-6.

"Unbelievable," is how rookie Impact coach Nick DeSantis described his team's season to date, but he added there is room for improvement.

"I'm proud and pleased, but we've got to keep moving forward. We can score more goals."

Despite resting several regulars, including goalkeeper Greg Sutton and defender Nevio Pizzolitto, the Impact toyed with Edmonton for much of the game. The swifter Montreal side held a 14-6 shots advantage as it drove at the Edmonton goal in waves.

Midfielder Ze Roberto opened the scoring for Montreal in the 21st minute on a header tipped first by Eddy Sebrango, who attempted a header on a cross by Chris Williams.

While the goal was being announced to the cheering crowd of 10,122, Sebrango struck again with an unassisted effort, his eighth goal of the season, that put the home side up 2-0. Edmonton 'keeper Nick Stankov had no chance on Sebrango's low shot from in front.

From then on, the Impact went on cruise control.

"Its great to have won (the Conference title) in front of our fans," said Sebrango, who came out of the game in the 76th minute, substituted by Joel Bailey.

"We just want to keep winning now."

Sutton's replacement, backup Andrew Olivieri, had little work to extend the club's shutout string to eight games. His toughest chance was a save on Edmonton's Sean Fraser in the19th minute.

The Impact, 9-1-3 at home this season, has secured homefield advantage for the first round of the playoffs, but its opponent has yet to be determined. Montreal's first home playoff date, to be broadcast on Fox Sports World, is set for Sept. 5.

Last night's win also allowed the Impact to capture the Voyageurs Cup, awarded to the league's top Canadian team, for a third consecutive season.

"This is one of the most well-balanced teams I've ever played on," said 11-year veteran Mauro Biello. "We play well collectively.."

The Impact's next regular-season game is tomorrow night in Rochester against its longtime rivals, the Raging Rhinos.

The Impact wrap up their regular-season schedule at home Sunday (4 p.m., CJAD, CKAC, RDS) against the Richmond Kickers.

Notes - The Impact, represented by midfielder Patrick Leduc, announced yesterday it is joining forces with Les Magasins-Partage to help a thousand underprivileged kids with a school lunch program. ... Leduc, a St. Lambert native, played in his 100th game with the Impact last night. ... Former Canadiens defenceman Stephane Quintal took in last night's game. ... Impact playoff tickets are now on sale at the club office (514)328-3668) or through the Admission Network. Regular-season prices ($5-$15) remain in effect.
