Vancouver Fan
To get 10 pts.Canada would have to have a record of 3 wins 2 losses and 1 tie.All Scenarios include a win over Honduras in Edmonton and an away win over Guatemala. Scenario#1 HONDURAS-Results Costa Rica W Canada L Guatemala W Canada W Guatemala W Costa Rica W CANADA-Results Guatemala L Honduras W Costa Rica T Honduras L Costa Rica W Guatemala W Guatemala-Results Canada W Costa Rica W Honduras L Costa Rica T Honduras L Canada L COSTA RICA-Results Honduras L Guatemala L Canada T Guatemala T Canada L Honduras L STANDINGS W L T P HONDURAS 5 0 1 16 CANADA 3 2 1 10 GUATEMALA 2 3 1 7 COSTA RICA 0 4 2 2 Scenario#2 Honduras-Results Costa Rica W Canada L Guatemala T Canada W Guatemala L Costa Rica W Canada-Results Guatemala L Honduras W Costa Rica T Honduras L Costa Rica W Guatemala W Guatemala-Results Canada W Costa Rica L Honduras T Costa Rica W Honduras W Canada L Costa Rica-Results Honduras L Guatemala W Canada T Guatemala L Canada L Honduras L STANDINGS W L T P HONDURAS 3 2 1 10 CANADA 3 2 1 10 GUATEMALA 3 2 1 10 COSTA RICA 1 4 1 4 I could have done more scenarios but I think that in most cases where Canada has 10 pts or more they would be in at least a tie for second place. If we substitute one of the wins over Honduras or Guatemala for a tie it would mean having to take 2 wins over Costa Rica.Either way it would come down to a tiebreaker for 2nd spot with Honduras or Guatemala. beachesl
..and the tiebreaker would come down to: first, match points scored between the tied teams concerned, then, to goal differential between the tied teams only, then, goals scored between the tied teams only, then, best goal differential between all the teams in the Group, then, most goals scored between all the teams in the Group, then, if still tied, it goes to an extra single deciding match at a neutral venue. This extra match would have to be on a non-international day, but the players release rules forcing clubs to release 5 days prior would apply, if two weeks formal notice is given to the club by the national association. Such a competition would likely be set by the Organizing Committee in early December. (There are NO away goals advantages at all in this round of the competition.) JuanValdez
To get 15 pts. Canada would have to have a record of 5 wins 1 loss and 0 ties. All Scenarios include a win over Honduras in Edmonton and an away win over Guatemala plus 3 more wins. I didn't do any scenarios but I think that in all cases where Canada has 15 pts they would be in at worst a tie for first place! Damn it's late. I need some coffee. Why not Canada?! Cheeta
No coin toss? The saving Grace in all this is that Costa Rica got handed their ass last week and can't be feeling good about it. With a little hard luck the entire CR campaing will go to pot and Canada could benefit from it. Don't think the Guats are going anywhere fast with what I saw last week so if you're going to drop three points to an enemy side it's better for us if those points end up in Guat limbo. I guess. We can still get our 6 points from this first group of 3 matchs. I thinks it doable. The 1st team looks as thought it'll all be back together again and we'll have them together for the week. I'm assuming this is why Frankie is so oh-well over the loss at Swangard. Because lets face it, another home loss for Costa Rica and they're sunk. And wouldn't it be nice to be the Undertaker for a change? Enough of this Coffin Dodger bull****. And there's our happy thoughts for today. Paddy
quote: Two weeks ago, anyone would have said that Costa Rica losing 5-2 at home, to anybody, was unlikely. Not that long ago I predicted (and posted here) that Costa Rica would not make it out of this round, so it is not really a shock to me, though I will digress and say that I didn't expect 5-2. Guatemala, believe it or not, may be the strongest team in our group. Many reports prior to this qualification round, even as far back as the 2000 gold cup, suggested that they were a team for the future. They definitely had the greatest stability in the build up for this round. Yes, I said we would crush them, but I was just trying to get pumped up. I really felt prior to the game with all the injuries that we would be lucky to get a tie. The best we can hope for now is that Honduras, yet again, implodes after its initial succes. In my heart I feel that we are done though. I just think the preparation was missing, yet again. I am at a loss. If we don't make it to the next round (again) something must be done as I do not want to hear the same excuses (from the CSA, coaches and fans) 4 years from now. Perhaps in Edmonton we should throw bags of money (bills only) at the Hondurans. It worked for the Mexicans last WCQ.
