Scary thought/stat

I know statistics are pretty useless, but I was thinking about something this morning: when was the last time we came back to win a game after conceeding the first goal? I got thinking it because I was optmisitic we could still win after going behind early Wednesday and was now wondering why.

The only recent game I could think of was Martinique and we won that on kicks, which I don't count. Before that the Mexico QF with the golden goal.

So I checked. We beat South Korea 2-1 in 02 Gold Cup third-place. Then there's the Mexico QF from 2000 (won in extra time, thank you Richard) and after that there's the 3-1 win over Jamaica in the Caribana Cup in 1994 when Onandi Lowe scored at 33 minutes and Tom Kouzmanis opened his international account with two goals — at 34 and 35 — to immediately erase the lead.

There you go: three comeback wins in the last 10 years and only two of them done in 90 minutes.

I would say scoring first is pretty important for us.

cheers,

matthew

Getting the first goal against Honduras will be important. All the anxiety over Guatemala will be set aside, however Canada will need to score at least twice to beat Honduras, I can't see us shutting them out.

Funny thing about this generation of the Honduras national team, they play better if they are coming from behind. There best games have been when they have allowed the first goal, it's like they love coming from behind. They just did it again last wed against Costa Rica. Actually, what they do the worst is trying to maintain a lead, it seems that in close games when they are wining, they always let the other team tie and then the game is over..like I've said before, the defense is the weak spoy of this team, specially without Caballero..

Just a question regarding this match up, was that a Korean B-Team they sent to the Gold Cup or was that their regular World Cup Team? Koreans are football crazy so I'd like to clear this up before I decide wether rubbing it in is worth a beating.

During the last world Cup when Korea advanced to the Semis, I decided ( at that time ) to go back and compare their squad to the one that faced Canada. I discovered that many of their WC starting players had also played in the game versus Canada. It was roughly 50% of their WC team that had started against canada. If you include the players on the bench in that gold cup game, I would say that that their sqaud was roughly 60-75% similar to their WC team.

The difference, they had rested a few of their starters for that game versus Canada. But by and large yes, it was mostly an A-team. You could call it an "A minus" team but not a B-team. With that in mind, I believed ( and still do) that their WC run was not for real considering that the mixture for first team/ second players that Korea used was roughly similar to the mixture that Germany used in their friendly versus Canada. Yet look at difference in how both sides fared against Canada. Note that for comparative purposes, I am using the the Euro 2004 germany squad and not the 2002 WC squad.
