strobe_z
What do you guys think our responsibility as fans are? I know "to cheer", but I've seen a couple of posts that echoed my sentiment from last night about a feeling of great despair after that debacle. I felt like the soccer gods must just hate us, and I too wondered what it would be like to be the fan of a team that wasn't such an excrutiating uphill battle to cheer for all the time. At least in most countries a loss like this would be a national shame.. here people don't know - or when they find out the result they go "oh". I don't know what's worse. All teams lose sometimes, it's a fact... but we seem to have so much stacked against us. No domestic league, players jetlagged and totally unfamiliar with each other, key players, some with "phantom" injuries, others real and inopportune times. Do we stick by these guys? Baring the option of "not caring", this is the only National team we have. How much do we lay at the feet of the players, the coach? How much do we just chalk up to the "impossible hurdles" of Canadian footy? Should we "go easy" on guys like Onstad who've sacraficed just to show up... or Jasic who've a long road to travel just to get here? Or do we just tear a stripe outta their hides and scream "Bloody Guatamala?!?". Bleh... it's a hard life being a Canadian fan.
mtlfan
Today after reflecting upon last night's event I would have to say this: The word responsibility belongs on the shoulders of the fans and the soccer community. We the fans and members of the soccer community know very well that the best motivation for any player is knowing they are being supported. That is what drives the boys to perform. I do expect all concerned to work to help the team for the rest of the round. Win, lose, or draw they are our team. Each and everyone I meet I make it clear that the only question is how many more people we can get to back them as we do. They is nothing like a packed house to pump up the boys and the more watching on TV the better. This is what we must think about. The road to Germany may be difficult. This appeals to me as just another challange in the wonder world of soccer.
Guest Ed
Support the players on the field. But there's no reason to not be critical of the CSA, coaches and/or players after the game. Are you content to sit back and cheer on 20 more years of descent in world rankings, both in terms of FIFA and in terms of world respect? I'm not. Do you "go easy" on the Oilers in Edmonton? You know people don't.
Lord Bob
If Canada was 200th in the FIFA ranking, our best player was a 48-year old midfielder in the Nationwide Conference, and the CSA decided that actually having the national team practice together would be bad for morale, I would still support the team with all my heart. If I weren't moving to Victoria the day before the Edmonton game (stupid schedulers), I would be in Commonwealth on the 4th cheering on Canada with all my heart and soul even after Honduras took a 4-0 lead. And then I'd log onto the boards and write up criticisms of why we got blown out. To me, that's my responsiblity.
GeorgeBestFan
Whatever happened to loyalty to your national team? We lost a game. Get over it. But don't make the team's job any harder by going on publicly about a game that's been and gone. We have a bunch of tremendous individual players. They are giving up a lot to play for Canada. The least we can do is support them. And we could have had some goals too. Notably if Serioux had chosen differently on a chance he created for himself near the end, where he tried to create a chance for someone else instead of taking a shot, and if OO had been a bit luckier with the run of the ball - so it wasn't all bad. Guest Ed
Who's questioning loyalty here? I bought tickets for the game in Edmonton the day they went on sale. I will be cheering the team on. But if they lay a stinker like last night, I will be criticising the coach and / or players as I see fit. P.S. I think that chance you were talking about was by DeRosario. Guest Georgio
GBF, Get used to the criticism, it's the reality with every club and every national team that the supporters dissect, criticize and wish for better when the performance is sub-par. If you haven't been following this forum for long, you will realize that the tone will change after a couple days and 99% of the people here will be supportive unless we notice asinine player selections. It's the day after a disgusting loss, people will vent. I am starting to feel better about the Honduras game already because I don't think we can play much worse as a team and particularly because I will get to see it live.
