YALLOP ANNOUNCES ROSTER FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST GUATEMALA

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 18-player roster for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala on August 18 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC.

Yallop has selected 11 players from the squad which defeated Belize 4-0 in back to back games in the first round. Several of those players are now with new clubs, with Tomasz Radzinski moving from Everton to Fulham and Jason deVos signing with Ipswich Town. Defender Ante Jazic is now in Russia at FC Kuban.

In addition, Yallop has rounded out his roster with seven players from the Development Team which competed last month in Burnaby against Millwall and Hearts in a tournament hosted by the BC Soccer Association. From that squad, Yallop has chosen Montreal Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton (who established a club single season record of 13 shutouts), Impact defenders Nevio Pizzolitto and Gabe Gervais, 17-year-old midfielder Jaime Peters, who has landed trials with Ipswich Town, Millwall, Derby and Manchester United; midfielders Josh Simpson and Adrian Serioux, who were both handed contracts by Millwall after their impressive performances last month, and striker Olivier Occean.

“I’m very happy with this squad as it represents what I feel are the players that are showing the best form at the moment,” said Yallop. “The players who came in last month were very impressive in their performances.”

The Canadians will begin arriving in Vancouver on Saturday. The team will train at Burnaby Lakes East at 2:00 p.m. on Monday and at 11:00 a.m. at Swangard Stadium on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff and will be carried on Rogers Sportsnet (11:00 p.m. ET, 8:00 p.m. PT).

Wow! Peters WAS selected.

Watson sitll there......Simpson got the well-deserved call-up....no McKenna so he's still hurt......Occean DEFINITLY deserved this too... No bernier.....this could be b/c he's JUST joined a new club and they want to let him settle in there, or they simply wanted to give Peters a look...Suprised to not see brennen, but he could use the time at the club to win a spot, since he's not in the prem.....Watson will probably team up with JDV in the middle but i hope Gervais gets a look in there. Let the assumptions begin! who's everyone's starting 11?

Onstad

Diesel - deVos - Watson - Jazic

Dero - Hutch - Imhoff - DeGuz

Radz - Pesch

Subs:

Sutton

Gervais

Serioux

Pizzolito

Simpson

Peters

Otto

Obviously Otto would get a cap if we were down late in thebgame and needed some extra fire-power...I'd like Gervais to get time at CB with jdv and Simpson or Peters to get some time in as well...

DeGuz would be better in the middle as the offensive minded guy, but i dont think simpson is QUITE ready for a start.....but i wouldnt say it's out of the question as he has impressed at millwall so far. Plus, i was impressed with JDG's play on the left flank vs. Germany...For such a young, inexperienced squad im very happy, and very excited

That's sort of what I was thinking. Maybe Frank felt he wasn't essential for this game and would be better off moving closer to winning a starting spot.

Question: with so many D called, would it be possible to see Diesel playing mid somewhere? I can dream, can't I?

Yea i could see Diesel playin Right mid, with dero at forward and Pesch used as a supersub, or the other way around

I remember afte the wales match someone said that we finally have someone to take freekicks (hume), as he almost put one in and had a few other nice ones.....since he's suspended for this matrch, who takes them? Who took them in the past? Stalteri? deGuz?

Well, along with the above-mentioned thoughts, a starting 11 might be relatively easy to figure out (I think?)

GK: Onstad

DF: Stalteri - DeVos - (1) - Jazic

MF: DeRosario - Imfof - deGuzman - (2)

FW: Pesch - Radz

(1): Select between Watson, Gervais & Pizzolitto

(2): Select between Hutchinson, Simpson & maybe Serioux (move Julian accordingly between centre or left wing)

Hmm...

Wow, props to Nolando. Peters is there.

No Brennan. Well Josh, our World Cup dreams are on your shoulders. No pressure for your international debut. I've got to assume he'll start on the left. Don't I?

We have option in the centre of defence, I'd take Pizzolitto or Gervais ahead of Watson. I was hoping for Tony, but Yallop looked at all these guys so I respect his decision.

Some gambles out there. I hope they pay off.

cheers,

matthew

The surprise omission for me was Brennan being left off the roster. I think this is a clear sign the Simpson has locked up the starting left wing slot for at least this match. If he plays as well as he did for the b-side, he may be starting thoughout WC qualifying.

Here's what I'd like to see:

Onstad

Stalteri - deVos - Gervais - Jazic

Hutchinson - Imhof - deGuzman - Simpson

Radzinski - de Rosario

What I think Yallop will do:

Onstad

Stalteri - deVos - Watson - Jazic

deRo - Imhof - deGuzman - Simpson

Radz - Pesch

Yes i agree Matthew...I repect every callup that frank makes at this point because of whathe's seen first hand in the last couple months.......he's seen probaly 30-40 different guys first hand and many of them deserve this shot.

Yallop for PM

(ok im kidding.....but he can't be THAT much worse than martin!)

iroically enough we are deepest at forward. don't like the look of the back though, with Watson (don't like him), Gervais (never seen), and Pizzolitto (never seen) all A-leaguers.

He dropped Brennan!?! [:0]

I'm shocked.

This must mean that DeRosario is going to play left mid, like he did against Belize, which would have relegated Brennan to the bench as DeRo's backup. Perhaps Yallop didn't think it was worth making Brennan miss his club's first Premiership match of the season just to sit on the bench when he can instead call on Simpson. Still shocking though.

So if DeRo is going to play left mid, who's going to play right mid? Stalteri maybe? With Serioux taking over from Stalteri at right back? Or maybe with Imhoff moving to right back and Serioux or Hutchinson taking Imhoff's spot as the ball winning central midfielder?

I see some positives from Yallop:

- North American based stars are getting there fair shake, especially at a time when they are in better game shape then most Euro players

- He is willing to experiment more with new players, something many have been calling for in the past

- His rosters are much more loaded with skill players

- No favourates for big team/league players, if your game is not up to snap, someone else can fill your spot

The most surprising roster selection that I have ver seen since I have joined this forum. I was expecting the same roster as Belize minus Hume , Hirshfeld, and watson , plus Occean, Gervais and Sutton. Instaed he added players players like Pizzolito. Its worth noting that its good to see that he is follwing and rewarding domestic excellence. The Impact have allowed 11 goals in 23 games this season which is by far and away the best in eh-league and Yallop has selected three of the main guys responsible for that.

Of note, There are very few Uefa qualifiers scheduled on Aug 18 whereas there are many on the set long weekend in sept. therefore leagues will be shut down and players are less likely to face club versus country conflicts. I suspect we will see quite a different sqaud named for edmonton.

I can only think that Yallop is trying to avoid another match like the T&T one, where we have the better over-all talent, have the better of the match but ended up losing because the match was played in the middle of the summer and most of our players were Euro-based, were in the middle of their off-season and weren't very sharp. Also, this is the most NA-based squad there has been in a very long time, which suggests that Yallop is worried about lack of game shape as well as jet-lag for the same players. Obviously the likes of Radzinski, De Guzman and Stalteri are too good to leave off even if they haven't played all summer & are flying in from Europe.

I just hope that Yallop hasn't ticked off the guys who played so well in Kingston and didn't really deserve to lose their spot (Brennan scores two goals and gets benched!) and has taken the time to explain to them that he's mainly going with North American players at this time (or players like Simpson, Serioux & Peters who have just come from there) because they've been playing all summer and the likes of Brennan and Klukowski haven't, and that the latter are still in his plans. I know we have more depth now, but we don't have the depth to be leaving EPL players who want to play for Canada off the squad on a regular basis.

My biggest concern, outside of Mark Watson being selected (if he starts, Ruiz is likely to eat him alive & have him for dessert as well), is that we are now merging two different squads (A & B teams) and hoping they will mesh together for the very first time in an extremely important World Cup qualifying match. A bit of a risk, but I guess the question is what is a bigger risk - going with a new team that's never played together or one that was beginning to gel but wouldn't necessarily be sharp.

Starting line-up guess:

GK: Onstad

Stalteri De Vos Gervais Jazic

De Rosario De Guzman Imhof Simpson

Radzinski Pesch

I guess Peters is the offensive midfielder sub - either that or Atiba. In youth we trust! Occean as the sub striker but De Ro can be move up there as well with Peters I suppose moving into the right flank.

Mind you, Stally can be pushed into midfield with Serioux replacing him at right back (and is also a choice for d-mid if Imhof gets hurt).

Nevio can play central defense and I guess Simpson can play at left back with Julian moving to the left and Atiba or Serioux moving into the middle.

Not a bad roster, biggest surprise is Brennan, but likely because he is just starting out in the premiership and doesnt want to take hime out of the running for norwich. Simpso defeniately deserved the call. A few injury concerns and humes suspension which likely opened up the door for more b squad players, but we certainly have more depth which is a must for WCQ. might ass well break in some plaayers because they might be called upon later on in the run to fill other voids. Interesting Pteres was called considering A)his age b)he is unnattached and c) he is going through a series of trials with numerous clubs to find a new home, but maybe yallop is helpin ghim out by giving him full international credentials now to add to his resume. A good roster, more obvious starting x1 from this batch

Onstad

Stalteri

Watson

De Vos

Jazic

Imhoff

Hutchinson

Deguzman

DeRosario

Radzinski

Peschisolido

Subs:

Sutton

Gervais

Pizzolitto

Simpson

Serioux

Peters

Occean

It doesn't sound like Peters has much to worry about in terms of his trials being interrupted by the call up - it sounds like at the very least he is going to be with Ipswich Town if nobody else wants him(though now I see that the CSA are also mentioning Millwall - why didn't they sign him at the same time as they did with Simpson & Serioux - and have repeated the Man U. trial info).
