The German leagues are back in action this weekend with last year's champions, Paul Stalteri's SV Werder Bremen, having the honour of starting Week 1 on Friday. Werder Bremen host FC Schalke 04 tomorrow night and Paul Stalteri will have his hands full with his ex-teammate Ailton, who made the move to the Gelsenkirschen side this summer. Stally is expected to start on the right side in a flat back four along with centrebacks Ismael and Fahrenhorst (newly acquired from VfL Bochum) and left back Pasenen (newly acquired from Ajax Amsterdam).

The other Canadian in the Bundesliga 1, Julian de Guzman, has earned a starting spot under head coach Lienen with Hannover 96. They have a tough away match on Saturday as they take on Bayer Leverkusen. Julian will be one of three defensive backs behind newly acquired number 10 Portuguese midfielder Sousa. Look for Julian to play on the left flank in front of Michael Tarnat (ex Manchester City man). It should be an interesting match for Julian as Bayer Leverkusen made some effort to get him on their team in the off-season.

The Bundesliga 2 now has two Canadians as Tam Nsaliwa has rejoined 1. FC Saarbruecken and is expected to start as the newly promoted club hosts FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt on Saturday. It looks like Tam will be playing in an offensive midfield role to start. The other Canadian, just signed today, is Ryan Thomson, who will be on the bench with his new club Rot-Weiss Essen as they host FC Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday.

The Regional League South opens on Friday as well, and Nik Ledgerwood should be with the 1860 Muenchen amateur team as they host Stuttgarter Kickers on Friday evening.

In the fourth division, Maycoll Canizales should debut with the Hannover 96 amateurs as they are away to Holstein Kiel's amateur team on Sunday in the Oberliga Nord. Dylan Hughes was not in action with the 1.FC Kaiserlautern amateurs who opened their Oberliga SouthWest campaign with a 1-0 win over FC Halberg-Brebach yesterday. The team plays again this Sunday taking on SG 06 Betzdorf. Likewise, Waldemar Dutra was not in action as his new club 1.FC Schweinfurt 1905 opened their Oberliga Bayern campaign with a 6-1 win yesterday. They also play this Saturday, home against SpVgg Bayreuth.

Blerim Rrustemi is with Borussia Moenchengladbach Amateurs but they do not start their Oberliga NordRhein campaign until next weekend.

Also keep in mind that we have several youngsters with the Junioren leagues which start later this month.
