OK, but my buddy counters with:

Founded: 1901 (charter American League member) Formerly known as: the Cleveland Naps, when Napoleon Lajoie was the team's star player, from 1903 through 1914. ...

did not know that, you got me there.lets say in the last 60 years.

Actually, the current name of the Cleveland MLB team is also based on a player:

The "Blues" and "Bluebirds" nicknames stemmed from the color of the teams' uniforms in the early years. Team members voted to scrap the "sissy" Bluebirds name prior to the 1902 season, settling on "Bronchos." It's unclear why. After getting rid of the blue uniforms, a Cleveland newspaper sponsored a contest for a new nickname. Fans chose "Naps" in honor of star player Nap Lajoie. With Lajoie out of the picture, fans again were asked to suggest a team name. "Indians" was chosen (it's unclear whether it had the most votes). A fan had entered the name in honor of Louis M. Sockalexis, reputed to be the first Native American to play in organized professional baseball. Sockalexis had played three seasons for Cleveland in the National League, and his death at the age of 42 in 1913 may have attributed to the sentiment for this name.

Who were they named after? Someone called Jet?

your joking right?

Regretably not. I didn't even know he was called the Golden Jet. It's a bit before my time. I knew all about his role in the WHA (then and now again), but did not know that his nickname determined the name of the club. Very interesting.

Here's a beer money winner. My buddy played for the Detroit Jr. Redwings. He's talking to Bob Probert in the gym about tough-guys. Try to guess who Bob Probert claimed was the toughest guy in the OHL when he played there. Hints: Southpaw, ex-Leaf.

Nobody gets this one.

The Winnipeg Jets were named after the NFL's New York Jets.

One of the Jets' founders attended a training camp for the NY Jets

and was impressed enough to carry the same name in 1972. Winnipeg

was also a Royal Canadian Air Force base, hence the name (as well

as the Bombers). The signing of the Golden Jet,Bobby Hull, was coincidental.

did the guy play with Probert in junior? Gill was a good guess by the way. He was really tough.

Nickname:

Named after Winnipeg's Western Hockey League team and growing transport industry. A frequent misconception is that the team was named after the first player in franchise history, Bobby Hull nicknamed "The Golden Jet" who they signed away from the Chicago Blackhawks for a record breaking $1 million dollars

You got it! Bob Probert told my buddy that when he was in the O, Todd Gill was the most feared player in the league. I can't believe you nailed it! He didn't show much in the NHL from a tough guy standpoint, but he had a few good dances.

Cool do I get a prize. A lot of tough junior guys find a different role once they hit pro. Gill throws pretty good though. He'll go with both hands (I didn't know if he was a natrural lefty) and has had a few really good fights in the NHL.

The former Leaf was a pretty good clue though.

cheers,

matthew
