Gian-Luca
It depends on what other options (realistically) Lars has. If nothing else is in the offing, take this, work hard to earn your chance & get rewarded further.
kelownaguy
I agree, it sucks that its only a 6 month contract but if he has no other options then it beats sitting at home training in Edmonton....

highburygooner
further to this post. you have to feel at least slightly optimistic for lars after this article. in today's financial climate for the non-old firm teams in scotland and lower leagues in england, this is probably the realistic way to go with players that they don't know a whole lot about. from the daily record: FOOTBALL: LARS SO GOOD UNITED OFFER FIVE-MONTH DEAL Aug 13 2004 TRIALIST goalkeeper Lars Hirschfield has been offered a short-term contract by Dundee United. But boss Ian McCall last night predicted the Canadian could be playing at Tannadice for years. Former Tottenham player Hirschfield has shown impressive form during his short spell with the club but has yet to face the test of playing against top-class opposition. United have had talks with Hirschfield and his agent and look set to agree a temporary deal with a view to reviewing it at the end of the year. McCall said: 'We have been in contact with Lars' agent with view to an initial contract of maybe five months and we can look at things further at the end of it. 'But my hunch is that he will be here for much longer than that - he really looks the part.'
bungey
The nice thing about this is if Lars does well he'll be able to look at bigger clubs, or sign with Dundee United.
beachesl
Some more detail by BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/d/dundee_utd/3563710.stm United offer to Hirschfeld Lars Hirschfeld wants back in the international frame Dundee United have offered a five-month contract to Canada international goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld after a successful trial. The 25-year-old was released by Tottenham Hotspur after failing to make a first-team appearance in two years at White Hart Lane. United manager Ian McCall said: "We've made an offer to Lars and are waiting on him getting back to us. "He has looked good in training and we need a goalkeeper." McCall has been looking for back-up for new first-choice Tony Bullock since the sale of Scotland international Paul Gallacher to Norwich City during the summer. Former Calgary Storm goalkeeper Hirschfeld had loan spells at Luton Town and Gillingham. "We have been in contact with Lars's agent with a view to an initial contract of maybe five months and we can look at things further at the end of it," said McCall. "But my hunch is that he will be here for much longer than that - he really looks the part." Hirschfeld was left out of Frank Yallop's Canada squad for next Wednesday's Concacaf zone World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Vancouver and will hope a move to United will his place back in the national squad. -------------------------------------------------------------- Looks like crunch time for Lars on so many levels, or it's Edmonton EFC and scraping for a shot at Canada's B squad next summer. I hope he gets a few good chances in the pipe at DU, impresses, and gets a whole raft of offers from even bigger clubs when he becomes a free agent in late January. Tangerine dream! ..and if Onstad muffs on the long ones as many of us secretly fear, we could see him back in the WCQ's in October or even earlier. Carpe diem, Lars:)! bettermirror
i think that this is a good move for him. i think at the very least another scottish team will see him and snap him up. hopefully it's an EPL and first division side, but anything pro is positive. if he has to go down to england div 2 i may prefer that as you get more variety and exposure. even a move to scandinavia? surely stamatop has given canada a good account. Guest Can. in UK
SKYSPORTS EXCLUSIVE Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld has agreed a short-term contract with Scottish Premier League side Dundee United, according to the player's agent. Agent Will Sherling told skysports.com that the Canadian international will become a Tannadice Park player this week after a successful trial spell with Ian McCall's side. "He's coming back to London to pick up his car (on Wednesday) before going back to Scotland and signing his contract with Dundee United," Sherling told skysports.com. Hirschfeld's move to The Terrors ends the 25-year-old's search for a new club following his release from English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season. The former Calgary Storm custodian failed to make a single first team appearance in his two years at White Hart Lane, having taken loan spells with Luton Town and Gillingham during that time. McCall will be delighted to add some goalkeeping cover after losing Paul Gallacher to Premiership new boys Norwich City in the summer.
