beachesl
Well, I'm still hoping that at the last minute, on August 13, they will name Sudbury (Laurentian University Field) or Thunder Bay as the venue for the Costa Rica match on October 13. Then on September 13 (they have one month to name a kickoff time), they can set a 1:00 am kickoff time a la Barcelona FC (remember they had that match after midnight last season to protest the refusal to schedule a match). The time would also give our lads an extra day travel to head back to Europe. It's all legal. Man would that shock the Ticos! They would not get huge crowds, but there would be some hard fans showing up making some pretty incredible noise. Imagine what an event that would be for either of those communities. Trouble is that the CSA are such wimps. And they have more or less said that it will be between Edmonton or Vancouver (maybe Vancouver since the ticket sales have been really slow in Edmonton so far). They have probably already decided which one and have to sort things out with Ticketmaster before they announce. Apparently some in the CSA see a downside with Edmonton concerning mid-October "climate issues". Sheeessssh, makes ya wonder sometimes! Our Central American friends are willing to schedule us for Saprissa FieldTurf on September 8, and set noon kickoffs in the tropical frontier hellholes in San Pedro Sula and Mazatenago, but we won't play the best cards we have.[}]
Former Champ
Hey Beaches Sure we have almost exactly the same name, but until now I thought we were on the same side. How can you not want the October game to be within your traveling means? Commonwealth is the premier soccer facility in the country. Thanks to global warming, winter doesn't start until March on the prairies now. You're not from the 'city of champions', you're some kinda alien imposter, sent here to make sure I don't fulfill my promise of seeing all Canada's home games in person. If Costa Rica isn't out west I'll ... I'm gonna stay up all night Aug 12 because I won't be able to sleep until I know where the Costa Rica game is. Dave, not only are you drinking too much while chatting, but now you're smoking crack.
beachesl
No, so far my recreational substances are all still legal or semi-legal. lol If you are a true rabid fan, then Sudbury should be within your means. Sigma is actually going to Costa Rica, and maybe other Central American sites, are you? You could write-off the trip as an examination of how the car washes do it in the "City of Slag". What is important to me is doing everything legally possible to make it through this round. Then we'll have several more games at Commonwealth, "Canada's National Soccer Stadium" according to the sign, for the hex. I may be a lot older than you, so making the hex and especuailly the World Cup tournament again before I die is more important than being able to see another semi qualifying match, as important as that is. I ain't no alien. I may have been born out East, but am "from" Edmonton for just about all of my life. I may not have been to as many national team matches over the past decade as you (I have probaly been to more national team matches involving other countries), but I'd bet you did'nt go to the first Canadian international of any type in Alberta, the June, 1967 two-game Olympic qualifying series against Cuba. Those games are an engrained part of my makeup, as my last grandmother died here in Edmonton that same month. Life, death and Canadian soccer are part of my makeup, so don't go calling me no alien. I have no problem with the climatic issues with Edmonton in mid-October, I was just passing on a passed-on comment from someone in the CSA. In fact, I hope it's unusual teeth-chattering brass monkey weather on October 13 if Edmonton gets that match. Probably it'll be very comfortable, like San Jose CR on a cool day. By the way, the announcement of the October stadium from the CSA might be considerably after the 13th of aug, so don't stay up too late. They often wait until they work out the Ticketmaster contract before announcing, so they can combine the announcement with ticket details. There is a better chance that the national association in Costa Rica will be announcing it to their supporters before the CSA does. Look forward to seeing you in person the City of Champions for the September 4 match at Canada's Cathedral of Real Football![8D]
Former Champ
Hi Dave When I called you an alien I meant space alien not illegal alien. I spent a week in Kingston and now I'm off to Van soon. I'm so broke that I might have to walk home from the Guatemala game:(, so another trek across Canada isn't what I had in mind this fall.
Guest Jeffery S.
quote:Originally posted by beachesl Then on September 13 (they have one month to name a kickoff time), they can set a 1:00 am kickoff time a la Barcelona FC (remember they had that match after midnight last season to protest the refusal to schedule a match). I was at that match, first of the season. Started, actually, at 12:05 AM and the stadium had a great turnout, maybe 80,000. Sevilla scored on a counter early and Ronaldinho late 2nd half hit what turned out to be one of the best goals of the season, starting on the left side on the half line, cutting right on two or three defenders as he charged, and shot rising from about 25, off the crossbar and in to tie. Reason, as stated, was that Barça was forced to release players for Euro qualifying that day (esp. Dutch) to make the weekend ties, so they played on the established day with them (didn't help much, and look where Overmaars is now). Now that we have 5 Brazilians internationals look for a repeat performance sometime during Comebol qualifying. I'm sure Yallop would be into this, let's go for it and screw Warner. Cheeta
Methinks somebody should have left the pub maybe just a bit earlier than they did. Why, tis madness!!! Of course, the Wee Elf and her's fled Sudbury many a long year ago and she'd probably be keen for a look-see.... How about St. John's or other points way, way out east? The further the bastards have to travel the better. Maybe it's not as cold that time of year out in the maritimes (no clue at all) but I'm sure it'll be a damp cold. The sort that gets right into the bones.
